Objects of the invention are to enable a succession of sheets to be typed rapidly, one after the other, and at the same time to produce multiple copies.
A feature of novelty resides in inserting a first sheet from the rear,,around beneath the platen, and up past the printing line, and subsequently inserting the sheets successively, one after the other, downwardly at the front between theplaten and 'thetop margin of the preceding sheet in slightly underlappingrelation therewith, the platen being rotated so :as to bring the successive sheets down to the printing line, and to deliver the typed sheets at the rear of the platen, so that, as the platen is rotated, each newly-inserted sheet is guided, by the next preceding sheet, to pass downwardly and. rearwardlybetween the platen and the usual paper-guiding devices associated with the platen.

In carrying out the method of the present invention, the first sheet A is inserted at the rear of the revoluble platen 1 over a shelf or rear paper-table 2, and is guided around beneath the platen above the usual releasable feed-rolls 3 by means of the usual paper-apron i, and is advanced to the front of the platen past the printing point thereon, indicated in Figure 1 by the raised typehead 5, where it may be held in position by the usual wing-scales 6 (Figure i), and by a front arm or finger 7 carrying a small roller 8 (Figure 1), being thus brought to the typing position, as shown in Figure 1. 1n

the feed-rolls 3 may be released and the sheet pushed around beneath the platen, or, in order to avoid releasing the feed-rolls, the sheet may be fed around to the typing position by rotating the platen in the required direction by means of the usual itinger-wheels 9 on the ends of the platen-axle 10, which is journaled in the end walls 11 of the platen-frame.
The sheet A. may be adjusted by means of lateral guides or side-edge gages 12 having floor-portions 1.3, the lower edges of which are normally in proximity to the front of the platen above the printing line, as shown in Figure 1, but which may be swung away from the platen by rotation about a transvers rod is along which the lateral guides or side-edge gages 12 are slidably adjustable, to accommodate sheets of different widths. The entry-sheets are thus successively in-- serted, one after the other, at the front oi the platen and brought do an to the typing osition, and, after being typed, are del ivered at the rear 0': the platen, each upon the next preceding typed sheet, on the receptacle 2, as snown in Figure 3, which shows the sheets A, B, C and D as having been typed and delivered upon the receptacle, while a yped sheet E is being delivered and a last-inserted sheet is being brought to the typing position as the platen rotates in the direction indicated by the arrow. The adjustable side-edge together with their floor-portions 13, form anintroductcry chute at the front of the platen for the downwardly-inserted sheets. as shown inFigures 1 and 4:. In the novel typewriting machine for carrying out the novel method, no sheet-d irecting means at. the front of the platen are required other than the adjustable chuteforming side gagesl so that the front and top of the platen are otherwise clear or any device which might interfere with the downward insertion of the w iii-sheets or with he tree manipulationand adjustment of the side gages. Also, as hereinbetore noted, the front of the platen above the printing line is clear of paper-feeding devices, and the small sheet-holding roller 8 is spaced from the platen, thereby providing for the unobstructed introduction of a work-sheet downwardly in underlapping relation to the previous work-sheet, as shown in Figure 1. It follows, therefore, that, when the entry-sheet is folded from the fiat condition thereol shown in Figure 5, along the perforated lines 19 and 20, the three sheet-parts will be superimposed with the corresponding columns and item-designations of all the sheet-parts in proper register, as will be clear from Figures 6 and 7, in which, however, the folded superimposec sheet-parts are shown as slightly separated for clarity of illustration.
Figures 6 and 7 illustrate, respectively, two different ways in which the flat entrysheet shown in Figure 5 may be folded tor bringing its three parts into superimposed relation for typing all these parts at the same time. In Figure 6 the stub-part 1.8 is shown as folded over upon the front of the bill-part 16, and the bill-part 16 and ledgersheet 17 are folded together with the led sheet 17 at the front while the bill-part is at the back of the ledgensheet 17, with the stub-part 18 interposed between the billpart 16 and ledger-sheet 1'7. According to the manner of folding the entry-sleet shown in Figure 7, the stub-part 18 is folded over upon the back of the bill-part 16, while the bill-part 16 and ledger-sheet 1'? are folded together with the bill-part 16 at the :tront and the ledger-sheet 17 at the back, with the stub-part 18 interposed between the bill-part 16 and the ledger-sheet 17. It is to be understood, of course, that carbon-sheets will be interleaved between the respective sheetparts, so as to reproduce the items desired. In the manner of folding the entry-sheet shown in Figure 6. the ledger-sheet 1.7 will be an original or ribbon-copy while the bill 16 and its stub 18 will be carbon-copies. According to the manner of folding the entrysheet shown in Figure 7, the bill 16 will be the original or ribbon-copy while the led rsheet 17 and bill-stub 18 will be boncopies. Obviously, if desired, the stub 18 could be folded over behind both the ledgersheet 17 and the bill 16.
After the typing operation, the ledger sheet 17 is detached and kept in the otlice while the bill l lting-ether with its attach-ed stub 18 is sent to the customer, who detaches the stub 18 from the bill 16, keeping the bill and returning the stub with his check, as customary. The record-part or ledger-sheet 17 is shown as provided in its upper margin with holes 21 for use in filing the ledgersheet.
In Figure 7 eight item-receiving columns are shown on the bill 16 and its stub 18, instead of the seven columns shown in Figure 5 and 6, thereby, in Figure 7, providing to. an additional item which ma; also appear in a corresponding additional column on the ledger-sheet 17.
In making out in succession numerous upon small bills, such as electric-light-bills, or which samples are shown in the drawings, gas-bills, and the like, which usually contain only one or possibly two lines or writing, and of which it is desired to have an otlice record and also a returnable stub,'it has been found that much time can be saved by the hereinbetore-described rapid method o1 typing and by the use of the three-part sheet shown in the drawings, and also by the use of the novel typewriting machine shown in the drawings and hereinbet'ore described.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope oi the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:
1. A multiple-part entry-sheet comprising a record-part havingsuitable iten1designatio-ns thereon, a bill-part joined at one of its e ids to one 01"- the ends of the record-part and having item-designations thereon corresponding with said item-designations on the record-part, but on the opposite side of the sheet and in verticallyreversed relation when the sheet is flat, the hill-part being ioldable upon the record-part 'ing the item-designations thereon into it" with those on the record-part, and a a part joined along one of its sides to one the sides or": the bill-part and having iereon item-designations corresponding to v on the record-part and bill-part, and on toe same side of the sheet as the itemdesignatlons on the record-part but in verti- '-ally-reversed relation thereto when the ,hcet is flat, the stub-part being foldable the bill-part to bring the item-designo tions thereon into register with the corresponding item-designations on the bill-part and on the record part, sothat all of said sheet-parts may be typed in their folded superimposed relation and subsequently separated along the lines of folding between the sheet-parts. I
2. A multiple-part entry-sheet comprising a record-part having a series of transverselyarranged item-designations thereon, a billpart of the same width and same length as the record-part, and at its bottom detachably connected along a transverse weakened l re of detachment with the bottom. of the record-part, the bill-part having thereon a transverse series of item-designations corresponding to those on the recordpart, but on the opposite side of the sheet and vertically reversed relatively to the record-part when the sheet is flat, the record-part and the billpart being toldable along said weakened line into superimposed relation to bring the item-designations on said sheet-parts into register, and a stub-part at the right side of the bill-part of less width than but of the same length as the bill-part and detachably connected therewith along a vertical weakened line of detachment and i'oldable along said vertical weakened line into superimposed relation With the bill-part and folded record-part, the stub-part having a series of transverse item-designations thereon corresponding to those on the record-part and the bill-part, and on the same side of the sheet when the sheet is fiat as the item-designations on the record-part and in vertically- 10 reversed relation thereto, said item-designations on the-stub-part being brought into register With corresponding item-designa-' superimposed relation for typing, so that all V of said sheet-parts may be typed together and subsequently separated along said Weakened lines of detachment.
