Application filed July 26,
This invention relates to a jack mainly designed for use'in connection with motor vehicles, the general object of the invention being to provide a ack of simple construction and which can be very easily operated and which has its handle part removable and formed to provide a number of tools for use in connection with a vehicle.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction andin the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described,
' handle.
In these views, 1 indicates the outer or stationary member of the jack which is of hollow construction so that it can receive the inner or movable part 2. The part 1 is provided with the usual base 3 and it has one edge open to form a slot l and this edge carries a pair of rack members 5, one on each side of the slot 4. The member 2 is head 6 and it is formed with an opening 7, the upper wall of which is inclined, and wear pins. 8 are inserted in recesses formed in said inclined upper wall. The handle9 is provided with a head 10 of hammer shape and a trunnion pin 11 passes through the inner part of the head and is adapted to engage the recesses in the rack members 5 so that the handle, can be rocked to place the curved part of the head against the inclined wall of the member '2 or against the wear pins therein and thus lift the member 2 in themember .1.
, A pin 13 is carried by a spring strip ll'which,
is'fastened to one side of the member 1, as shown at 15, and this pin 13 is adapted to engage any one'of a plurality of holes 16 formed in the member 2 to hold said memher 2 in'the position to which it has been moved by the handle member. "The handle g at or LA esvILLn, oiilo.

member is then moved to the next higher pair of reciisses in the rack members and is then tilted again to raise the member2 another step. At the beginning of this raising movement the pinl?) will be forced out of the recess 16 due to the beveled construction of the parts, as shown at 17, and then the pin will engage the next lower recess 16 and thus hold the member 2 in its new position. The handle member 9 is then removed and placed in the next pair of recesses in the rack members and forced downwardly again to raise the member 2 another step and. this will be kept up until the part being raised has been lifted to the proper position. As will be seen the pin 13 will hold the member 2 in the position to which it has been moved by the handle so to permit the handle to be withdrawn and placed in a new pair of notches. To lower the jack the member 2 is slightly raised by the handle so that the pin" 13 can be pulled from the recess 16 by the handle 18 on the strip 14 and then the handle is slowly moved upwardly to permit the member 2 to move downwardly until the pin 13 engages the next lower hole 16. Then the. handle is placed in the next lower pair of recesses and the same operation repeated.
The handle 9 has its projecting part 12 Y shaped so that it can beused as a hammer and the handle is also provided with the openings 19 which may be used to receive nuts andthe'like so that the handle acts as awrench when removed from the jack.
The extremity of the handle isalso beveled, as at 20, sothat it can be used as a tire tool and for other purposes.
From the foregoingitv will I be seen that l have produced a simple and inexpensive jack and one which is very. easy to operate and as a handle can be used as a hammer, a wrench and a tire tool, the device will be very useful when carried in a motor vehicle. It is thought fromtheforegoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
l desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement f of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim."
