WINDOW LATCH.
latched to bind on the walls ofV their guides i and thus be rigidly held against vertical for latching the sash members against sliding movement when in any position of adjustment relatively to each other and to the window frame, and to provide for rendering the manipulating devices inaccessible from a position outside .the window when the sashes are partly open. i
The above and other objects are accomplished by instrumentalities pointed out in the following specification.
The invention is cle-arly defined in the claims.
A satisfactory embodiment of theL invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of the specification and in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal cross-section of the device in use.
Figure 2 is a detail end elevation.
Figure 3 is a plan view, and
.Figure 4 is a fragmentary side elevation of one end portion of the device'.
The window latch a of thepresent invention comprises a clamp portion and a screw operated presser bar c. rlhe clamp member b consists of a curved sleeve portion 5 which is open at one end for Vtelescopically'receiving a sleeve 6. The sleeves 5 and 6 carry at their outer ends aws 7 and 8 which are provided for bearing on the opposite faces of the upper corner portion of the lower sash 9 of a window d, as shown in Figures 1 and 3. The connection between the sleeves 5 and 6 is such that these sleeves slide one upon the other so as to permit the jaws to be secured to varying widths of sash. An adjusting screw 10 is screwed into the jaw 8 which bears on the outer face of the lower sash 9 and a cylindrical extension 11 of the screw is j ournaled in the jaw 7 and terminates in a non-cylindrical end portion 12 which is adapted for insertion into the socket of a key or other suitable implement which may be employed for turning theV screw 107 in ad- Application Vfiled September 8, 1925. Serial No. 55,138.
justing the jaws to receive the lower sash 9 and for operating the jaws to clamp the said sash or to move out of engagement therewith. j
n rEhe. presser bar c is superimposed upon clamp b and the underside of the semi-circular body 12 has a longitudinally extending channel 13 which ,receives the upper segment of sleeve 5 upon which it is adapted to slide. A pair of oppositely disposedv grooves 14 extend longitudinally of the opposite sidesvof.v the sleeve 5 and reecive oppositely disposed ribs 15 arranged inthe channel 13, :and extending longitudinally thereof and disposed near the opposite lon-` gitudinal edges of the same. A. lug 16 eX- tends obliquely upward from one end ofthe. body 12 and is arranged so as tov bear upon one `of the side rails of the upper sash 17. The wally of the channel 13 -is screw-threaded,
as indicated by 18, and a-correspondingly screw-threaded groove is provided uponv the upper side of the sleeve 5 disposed within the channel. The presence of the screwthreaded groove cooperates with the channel to provide a screw-threaded hole for an adjusting screw 19 which is held against endwise movement within the presser bar by a rib` 20 disposed in a circular groove 21 in one end portion of the screw. rIhe screw terminates at one end in a non-cylindrical boss 22 which is adapted to it into the" socket of a key or other suitable operating implement.v
It will be noted that the non-cylindrical end portions 12 and 22 of the Vscrews 10 and 19 are disposed underneath overhanging portions 23 .and v24 which are respectively disposed on the inner jaw 7 and inner end of the presser bar c. The presence of the overhanging portions 23 and 24 conceals the end portions 12 and 22 of the screws from theoutside of the window, and thereby prevents access being had to the said end portions of the Screws from a' position outside of the window while the device is in use and holding the sash members locked in open position. v
In using the device, the clamp member o is adjusted to receive the upper corner portion of the lower sash 9 after which the screw 10 is turend which causes the jaws 7 and 8 to bind upon opposite portions of the lower sash 9. ln this connection one of the jaws as, .for instance., the jaw 8 may bef-f provided with a spur 25 on its inner face to .embed iinto the adjacent surface of the binds upon the guide for thesame. In this way both sashes are it'rictionallv held` againstk vertical movement in any of their adjustedA positions.
Although I have shown and described one embodiment of'my invention', itis to be. understood that the same is susceptible ofvarious changes; and I reserve the'rigl'it to employ such as may come within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
l. A latch for the upper and lower sashy members. of a window comprising a clamp having relatively movable jaw members adapted'to be detachably connected to one of the upper corners of the lower sash anda presser bar slldably connect-ed to the clamp and adapted to bear outwardly upon a' side railA of the upper sash, and means'connecting the clamp to the pres-ser bar'for operating:
the latter to move into and out of contact with the upper sash.
2. A latch for the upper and lower sashes ,0f a window comprising a-clamp including oppositely 'disposed and relatively movable jaw members adapted to be detachably connected to one of the upper corner portions of the lower sash and a presser bar slidably connected to the clamp andadapted to bear outwardly uponaside rail of the upper sash, and cooperating structures including a screw connecting the clamp to the presser bar and adapted for operating the 'presser bar to move into and out of contact with the upper sash.
3. A window sash latch comprising a clamp having oppositely disposed and relatively movable jaw members and telescoping sleeve portions connected to the jaw men bers, a screw extending through the jaw members for operating the same to move toward and away from each other, yone-of f said jaw members being providedI with an overhanging portion extendingv beyondone end of the screw, a presser bar slidably oon-- neeted to one or the sleeve portions and the clamp and having, at one end a laterallyeirtending lug and means connecting the presser bar tothe clamp and'iior operatingthe same to slide upon the Clamp.
