REGULATOR SYSTEH.
Application fled June 1am, Serial Io. 587,266. Renewed larch 27, 1926.
My invention relates to regulator systems and it has special relation to a load-regulating system.
' One object of my invention is to provide.
'5 a system of theabove-indicated character that shall 'function to maintain a substantiall constant load upon a dynamo-electric mac ine.
Another object of my invention is to rolo vide a system of the above-indicated c ar acter for a motor that is operated from a power circuit feeding other variable load apparatus, and so governing the operation of said. motor that the load taken thereby shall not exceed a predetermined maximum demand upon the power circuit.
Another object of my invention is to provide aj system of the above-indicated character that comprises a motor 0 erated from .20 a power circuit su plying ot er variable load apparatus, an regulating the operation of said motor so that it will utilize on] that power not consumed b the other variable load apparatus, wit in a predetermined limit.
Briefly, the system comprises a pulp 'grindenoperated by a motor that is connected to a power circuit which feeds the apparatus for the entire mill. The load upon the ulp grinder is capable of being regulate so as to maintain the load thereupon substantially constant.
The mill operator may purchase a certain amount of power for which he pays a minimum rate. It, therefore, becomes important that the mill should not consume more than the maximum amount of power to be obtained at'the minimum rate. It is not essential that the pulp inders function to full-load capacity continuously, so that the present invention contemplates providing additional regulating apparatus energized from the'power circuit and adapted to' control the circuit through the load regulator for the pulp grinder-motor so that the pulp .grinder motor will consume only as much power within said minimum-rate schedule as is not consumed by the remainder of the mill load. Or, in the event of the mill load being low, the load-regulating apparatus will merely maintain a predetermined full load upon the pulp less of the power available for the operation. of the motor. Anti-hunting means is provided for appratus.
'- connected to the contact members 21 and 22,
inder motor, regard- My invention will be best understood from the accompanying drawing, wherein the single figure is a diagrammatic view of the tcircuits and apparatus embodying my invenion.
The present invention is an improvement upon the application of W. G. Mylius, filed June 5, 1922, Serial No. 566,063, and assigned to the Westinghouse Electric & Manu acturing Company, and, in so far as rac-- ticable, the same reference numerals Wlll be used herein to designate corresponding parts.
Apulp grinder 1 is adapted to be operated by a motor 2 that is connected to a power circuit comprising conductors 3, 4,
tion of the motor 8 is controlled by means of reversing switches '11 and 12.
The switches 11 and 12 are similar in construction so that switch 11 only will be described. This switch has an operating coil 13 and a switch arm 14 that is pivoted at 15. The arm 14 controls main contact members 16 and 17. The shaft of the mo tor 8 is provided with a friction brake 18 comfprising pivoted members that engage the sha t of the motor and are controlled b means of the coil 19. The operating coi s 13 of the switches 11 and 12 are respectively and the brake coil 19 is connected to the paralleled contact members 20, the circuit through all of which is controlled by means of the regulator 23.
The regulator 23 comprises an arm'24 that is pivoted at 25, and carries on one end thereof a weight 26.- Mounted on opposite dispowd coil 31.- The coils 31 are energized from the potential transformer '32 that is connected across the power circuit 3, 4, 5, thereby polarizing the electromagnets 27 and 28. The coils 29 are adapted to be ener 'ized from series transformers 33, and 34 which are connected in the circuit to the motor 2 that is operating the pulp grinder 1, thereby energizing the electromagnets 27 and 28 proportional to the load taken by the motor 2. The load is measured by the watts consumed by the circuit.
The pull of the electromagnets is balanced with respect to the constant power of the weight 26, for which could be substituted a spring or other equivalent means. If the load upon the motor 2 should vary, the variation will be indicated by the value of the current taken by the motor from the power circuit and through the transformers 33 and 34, will be communicated to the electro magnets 27 and The be increased to overcome the action of the weight or decreased so that the weight will overcome pull of the electromagnets. The result will be to complete the circuit through either contact members 21 or contact member 22 to the respective reversing switches 11 and 12, to operate the motor 8 in the proper direction to restore the load upon the pulp grinder to normal.
In order to prevent hunting action by the regulator, baclr contact members 35 and 35 are respectively provided for the reversing switches 11 and 12. The contact members 35 control a shunt circuit for a resistor 36 that is connected in series circuit relation with the potential coils 31 of the electromagnets 27 and 28, while the contact members 35 control a circuit to a resistor 37 that is adapted to be connected in parallel circuit relation to the potential coils 31 of the electromagnets when the contact members 35' are closed. Thus, the polarization of the electromagnets will be increased or decreased as may be necessary to separate the engaged contact members prior to the obtaining of normal load conditions.
In order to prevent the motor 2 from taking power in excess of the minimum rate, the arm 24 of the regulator 23 is divided by a section of insulation 41 that is located between the contact members 21 and 22. The circuit to the arm 24 on the side of the contact members 22 is normally com leted (1i rectly from the transformer 32. owever, the circuit to the arm 24 on the side of the contact members 21 is completed only through the contact members 42 of the regulator 43. The regulator 43 com rises an arm 44 that is pivoted at 45, an has separate contact members 46 located on the opposite side of the pivot from the contact members 42. The arm 44 carries a weight 47 or equivalent means for exertin a constant pull upon the arm. The re ator 43 also comprises electromagnets 48 and 49 that power will either" members 21.
are disposed on opposite sides of the pivot 45. The electromagnets are similar in construction to the electromagnets 27 and 28 of the regulator 23 and comprise differential coils 51 that are respectively disposed on the upper and lower ends of the core member 52 and are energized from the series transformers 53 and 54. The transformers 53 and '54 are connected in the power circuit ahead of any of the connections for the mill apparatus. The electromagnets also have centrally disposed coils 55 that are energized from the potential transformer 32 in order to polarize the electromagnets 48 and 49.
If the power drawn from the feeders 3, 4, 5, exceeds a predetermined amount, which is still within the minimum-rate amount, the indication is communicated to the electromagnets 48 and 49 from the transformers 53 and 54. This action will cause the engagement of the contact members 46, thereby operating the reversing switch 12 to remove load from the pulp grinder 1, and reduce the power consumed by the motor 2. A change in the position of the regulator 23 is thus effected, so that the contact members 21 will engage each other.
As the mill loaddecreases, the indication will be communicated to the electromagnet-s 48 and 49 and cause the closing of the contact members 42. This closure will complete the circuit from the transformer 32 to that portion of the arm 24 that carries the contact These contact members are already in engagement so that the circuit will be immediately completed to the reversing switch 11 to operate the motor 8, to increase the load upon the pulp grinder 1 and cause the motor 2 to take more current from the feeders 3, 4, 5. \Vhen the motor 2 is drawing sufiicient power so that the indication upon the transformers 53 and 54 approaches the maximum limit of the minimum-rate amount, the regulator 43 will effect disengagement of the contact members 42 and break the circuit to the reversing switch -11, thereby establishing the setting at which the regulator 23 will operate.
It will be apparent that there is nothing interfering with the normal functioning of the regulator 23 to maintain the load upon the pulp grinder 1 siibstantially constant at the setting that is determined by the regulater 43. If the mill load varies, the apparatus will be caused to function in the manner described to control the load upon the pulp grinder 1 from zero to its fullload capacity.
Modifications in the system and arrangement and location of parts may be made within the spirit and scope of my invention, and such modifications are intended to be covered by the appended claims.
