BODY-CONTACT DEVICE non CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENTMACHI'NES. T
-' Application filedDecember 12', 1922. Serial No. 606,389.
My invention relates to a body contact device for chiropractic adjustment machines and the objects of my invention are: first, to provide a contact device of this'class of bridged'shaped and"construction which when applied to the regions of the spinal column can be made tostraddle the column andapply equal pressure to both sides thereof for loosening and adjusting the ligaments, muscles and tissues in the vicinity of the spinal column preparatory to adjustment of the vertebrae; second, to provide a body contact device of this class of very yieldable construction so that When the same is applied as stated above no injurious ef fects will be obtained; third, to provide a novelly constructed body contact device for chiropractic adjustment machines and fourth to provide a contact device of this class which is particularly simple and economical of construction, durable, practical, eflicient and which will not readily deteriorate'or get out of order.
IVith these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter my invention consists of certain novel features of constructi-on, combination and arrangement of parts and portions, as will be hereinafter described in detail andparticularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application, in which:
Figure 1 is an end view of the body contact device for chiropractic adjustment machines showing the same positioned on the end of the reciprocating plunger of the machine which plunger is shown fragmentarily and in section and showing by dotted lines a receded position of portions of-the contact device when contacting with the body; Fig. 2 is a side elevational view thereof shown apart from the plunger as shown in Fig. l and Fig. 3 is a plan view thereof.
Like characters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawings.
, The main contact member 1, plate2, bolt 3 and the nut 4 constitute the principal parts and portions of my body contact device.
The main contact member 1 is preferably made of a resilient pliable rubber and is substantially U-shaped in cross section, as shown, its width being somewhat less than its length. The leg portions 1 of the U- shapedniember 1 areslightly narrowerthanthe cross portion 1 which connects saidleg portions. The normallyupper or'outer side of the member 1 is slightly curved as shown 1 best in Fig. 1 of the drawings. A plate )2 also the upper curved face of the member 1. 'A bolt 3 provided with a substantially large headis inserted through the cross connecting portion of the U-shaped member from the normally lower or inner side thereof and .60 curved downwardly is positioned adjacent ext-ends through the same and through the plate 2 positioned again-st the outer side.
The member 1. and the plate 2 are held in position relatively to each other by the bolt extending therethrough and by the nut 1 screwed on said bolt. It will be noted that the screw portion of the bolt extends a considerable distance beyond the nutt and thus provides ample means for securing the body contact member as described to the reciprocating plunger A of a chiropractic adjustment machine, for which I havemade separate application for Letters Patent, filed in the United States Patent Oflice, October 9, 1922, Serial No. 593,448, the outer end of said plunger being provided with an internally threaded recess.
Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions I do not wish to be limited tothi-s particular con struction, combination and arrangement but desire to 'include in the scope of my in vention, the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
It is obvious from this construction that there is provided .a contact device for chiropractic adjustment machinesof bridged construction which when applied to the regions of the spinal column can be madeto straddle the column and apply equal pressure to both sides thereof loosening and adjusting the ligaments, muscles and tissues in the vicinity of the spinal column, preparatory to the adjustment of the vertebrae; that I have provided a contact device of this class which is particularly resilient of construction and will yield whenapplied to the body or bones of the body and is so constructed as to straddle sore or injured por tions of the body; that there is provided a novelly constructed body contact device for chiropractic adjustment machines and that there is provided a contact device of this class which is particularly simple and economical of construction, durable, eflicient, practical and which will not readily detericrate or get out of order.
Having thus described my invention vvhat '1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: H
1. In a device of the class described, the combination With a vibrating member of a substantially U-shaped yieldable rubber body contact member, the leg and connecting portions thereof being of integral construction and vthe length thereof being greater than the Width, a reinforcing resilient plate positioned bn the back side of said body contact n'uemberand a bolt means extending through the connecting portion of said bodV contact member and said plate, securing the same together and adapted to be secured to one end of said vibrating member.
a In a device of the class described; the
ed With a securing portion extending eyond said plate adapted to secure said supporting 1 member to said vibrating member.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at SanDiego, California this 5th day of December 1922. v
ERNEST H. ASHLOCK.
