IMPROVEMENT IN BOOK-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 160.044, dated February 23, 1875 application filed October 12, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT L. WILSON, of Broadway, Warren county, New Jersey, have invented an Improved Book-Holder; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my bookstand, and Fig. 2 is a side view of the clamps.
The object of my invention is to provide a book-rest for students and others which, when secured to the arm of a chair or to a table, may be adjusted in any direction and secured in any convenient position to accommodate the reader, copyist, or scholar.
My invention consists in combining a clamp, an adjustable pivoted screw-arm, and a jamnut, also a book-rack and an adjustable copyguide, all of which is hereinafter. more fully set forth.
In the drawings, A represents a clamp, having lugs A A which clasp the arm of an ordinary chair or the top of a table, and are secured thereto by means of the thumb-screw A having a swivel-head, a. A A are lugs projecting in an opposite direction from lugs A A and support the arm B by said arm passing through both lugs. Upon the end of the arm B is cut a screw-thread, and a female screw-thread in the lugs A A enables the arm to turn as on a pivot, and at the same time be adjusted in a vertical direction. A thumb jam-nut, a secures the arm B in any desired position it may assume. Upon the outer end of the arm B is placed, in suitable position, a book-rack, R, having the flange S for a support for the book. Upon the lower edge of the book-rack R is an eye, 0, and near the top and upon the back side of said book-rack R is a similar eye, which are used as guides for the cord K. Sliding freely upon the arm B, and yet allowing it to be secured by means of a thumb-screw, e, is the collar m, having a lug upon its side, to which is secured the cord K. The opposite end of the cord K is attached to a bar or copy-guide, V, resting upon the book upon the rack B.
The operation of my device is as follows: The clamp A having been made secure in some convenient place, and the arm B having been adjusted to a suitable height and position, the jam-nut a is screwed home, and a book placed upon the book-rack B. The copyguide V is then placed upon the book at the place where it is to be kept open, and adjusted as to height upon the page by means of the cord K, collar m, and thumb-screw e; and while the student is reading, or the copyist is copying, the copy-guide may be continually adjusted, so as to keep the line and place.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1's- 1. The combination of the book-rack R, supported upon the arm B, with the adjustable oopyguide V, cord K, guiding-collar m, and set-screw e, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of the adjustable swinging arm B, threaded on the lower end, jamnut a and clamp A A substantially as and for the purpose described.
The above specification of my said invention signed and witnessed at Washington, New Jersey, this 3d day of October, A. D. 187 4.
ALBERT L. WILSON.
