, removal of blanks therefrom after their edges have been turned therearound, and which comprises several parts assembled in such novel manner as to normally maintain apractically rigid device embodying a sectional die eomprising plates maintained in perfect alignmentand presenting a smooth die-surface during the operation of pressing it on a blank. This application ;is a substitute for my abandoned application Serial No. 179,852, filed July 11, 1917, for dies and heads for folding machines.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure l is a plan view of the device. Fig. '2 is a longitudi nal sectional view ,taken on the line 22 of Fig.1. Fig;'3 is a similarview showing the device contracted in length. Fig. l is a side view. "Fig. 5 is an inverted plan view. Fig. 6 is a cross sectional View taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 2, and drawn on an enlarged scale. Fig. 7 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 77 of F ig. 2, and drawn on an enlarged scale.
In the example of my invention illus trated in the accompanying drawings, A, indicates the die-head which is provided with a deep groove 2, which extends throughout its entire length and snugly en gages the die-sections B, C and D. The die-section C, is fixed to the head A, by
' means of a screw 3, and the sections B and D, are adjustably secured to said head by means of screws 4, which pass through slots 5, in the upper wall of the head A.
The die-section B, comprises the fixed part 6 and rocking part 7, having the grooves 8 and 9, which respectively engage the tongues 10 and 11, of the part 6. The parts 6 and 7, are normally held in parallel horizontal alignment by means of the spiral upon a blank, as shown b This application filed May 26, .1923.

Each dissection has removably secured to its under surface a plate .15; and these, in conjunction, form the die proper and may be of any desired conformation.
One side face of the head A, is provided with a scale F ,and the die-sections B and D, arerespectively provided with a pointer 16, for registration with said scale, wherebythe required length ofdie maybe indieated.

It is-noteworthy that the "upright partsof the die-sections snugly engage the deep" groove 2, of the head A, maintaining rigidity whereby when the die is pressed on theblank to be turned the plates 15, are in perfeet alignment on a horizontal plane. But
when it is desired to contract the length of the die it is simply necessary to move the section B, first downwardly andthen inwardly, the interlocking tongues and grooves acting to limit the movement and maintain the parts in engagement, as shown by Fig. 3 of the drawings.
In the drawings I have illustrated but one rocking die-section; but a rocking section may be employed at each end if found desirable.
In the operation and use of the invention the die is pressed downwardly and held dotted lines 20. Fig. l of the drawings. ,hen the edges of the blank are inturned over the die plates, as shown by dotted lines 21, Fig; 2 of the drawings. After the blank is removed the section B, automatically assumes its normal .position, by means of the spring E,'and all parts of the die are again in normal horizontal alignment ready to be pressed upon a new blank, the shoulder a, acting to prevent any accidental movement of the interlocked parts, and the normal horizontal alignment of the rocking part 7, fixed part 6 and head A, providing a practically rigid structure. To remove the turned blank the die is contracted in length by simply moving the rocking section 7, into position shown by Fig. 3 of the drawings.
Having thus described. my invention, whatlclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a head and die for folding machine-s, a head provided with a grooved'lower surface and with slots, an intermediary diesection engaging the aforesaid grooved surface and secured thereto, tongued fixed parts for the end die sections and rocking parts for said end sections, said rocking parts provided with means engaging the grooved lower surface of said head to preserve the die parts in horizontal alignment and with slotted recesses receiving and engaging the tongues of the aforesaid tongued fixed parts, said slotted recesses being longer than the said tongues and of varying width to permit said end die sections to rock in a vertical plane.
2. In a head and die for folding machines the combination with a head provided with. an aligning groove, of an intermediate fixed die-section, an end slidable die-section, and
an end die section comprising a fixed part and a part rockable in vertical plane while interlocked with said fixed part and retained in engagement with said head groove and spring-means for maintaining said fixed and rocking parts in normal align-.
with and restrained from movement from horizontal alignment, and spring means for maintaining said fixed and rocking parts in normal horizontal alignment.
l. in a head and die for use in folding machines, the combination, with a grooved and slotted head, of a' slidably adjustable die-section at one end thereof, a fixed die section intermediately located, and a slidably adjustable die-section comprising a fixed horizontal part and a rocking part movable in vertical plane while interlocked therewith, and spring means for maintaining said parts in normal alignment.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination, with a grooved and slotted head, and an intermediate normally fixed die-section; of a longitudinally slidable diesection, and an oppositely located slidably adjustable die-section comprisinga normal ly fixed horizontal part having substantially horizontal tongues, and a rocking part having grooves interlocked with saidtongues and engaging said head groove to preserve alignment therewith, and spring means for maintaining said parts in normal alignment; said die-sections each comp *ising an upright part and a. horizontal plate.
