This invention relates to improvements in ian-fold or continuous billing typewriting machines, such as disclosed in the patent to VVernery and Smith, Serial No. 1,132,055,
granted March 16, 1915, and relates to machines of this type in which there are two carbon-carriers, either ot which may be used independently of the other, tor operating on different work-webs.
Provision isherein disclosed whereby the typist is enabled to work with several difierent'types ot webs, and is enabled to quickly remove one of the webs Yfrom the machine for the substitution of another.
The present invention provides simplified means for spacing the rear carbon-holder `slightly above its carrier truck so as to prov`vide a passageway therebetween, tor the .webs associated with the 'front carbon-carrier to pass and thus permit the removal of said rear carbon-holder to replace it by .another carbon-holder having a third workzweb, without disturbing the work-web ot' :the front carbon-carrier. rllhe arrangement also facilitates the rapid substitution ot' another web for the one associated with the ifront" carbon-carrier. Heretotore it has been the practice to conduct the webs ot the iront carrier over the carbon-holder of the rear carrier, i. e., between the base oic the carbon-holder and the carbon-supporting brackets or clips, with the result that the `webs of both oit' said carriers were practically interlocked or inseparable from one ano-ther.
A further feature of the invention is the provision oi means tor detlecting the leading portions of the work-webs oit the front carbon-carrier downwardly behind the rear et the typewriter, so as to rest upon a supportingtable which lies beneath the track- Vways of the carbon-p:iper-carriers.
Another feature is the provision of means for holding the rear carbon-carrier adjacent the rear of the machine while the 'forward carbon-carrier is being used. n

A platen 10 may be mounted, as usual, in
Aa platen-displacing frame 11 to swing about a transverse shaft 12 secured at its ends in a carriage 13, and may be rotated by means of a platen-knob 14 of the usual line-space mechanism. F eed-rolls 15 and 16 maybe used to co-operate with a rear paper-tableV 17 in feeding work-sheets underneath and around the platen 10. A front paper-table 18 usually supports a gage-bar 19 on which is mounted a gage 2O tor determining the position of the .leading edges oi work-sheet units to be severed trom the webs. The trame 11 may be retained in normal position by means ot a hook 21 which engages a pin 22 onsaid trame.
Supported by means of brackets 23, fastened to the rear of the carriage 13, may be the usual work-supporting trame 24. A transverse rod 25 may support by means of brackets 26 a ywork-supporting rod 27, the latter being provided with the uusal paperguides 28. Side members 29 of the work- .supporting frame 24 are provided with rails 30 which support a front carbon-carrier'A and a rear carbon-carrier B. The front carbon-carrier A is of the usual construction and comprises a truck 31 having rollers 32 `which ride upon the rails 30. `A lever 33 is pivoted at 34 to swing into engagement with a slot of a pin 35, which projects from a bracket-plate or carbon-holder 36 through a perforation in the truck 31, as well known in machines of this type. The rear carboncarrier B is similar to the front carbon-carrier ,A with the exception that the bracketplate 3'? is positioned somewhat above the truck 38, and for this purpose spacers 39 'are employed adjacent both sides of the rear carrier, and may eachcomprise a length of sheet material bent as at 40 and 41, to provide feet 42 and platforms 39', Screws`43 may be used for fastening the spacers 39Ito the truck 33. The bracket-plate 37 is` of the usual construction and includes pins 44 Vloo fixed upon the under side thereof. The pins 44 project through perforations 46 in the platforms 39 and are siotted at 45 beneath said platforms to each receive the blade-f4? of a lever 48pivotedat 4) to the under side of` each of the platforms, so as to secure the bracket-plate 3T upon the truck 38. In the front carbon-carrier A, lseveral of the upper carbonblades are omitted to leave room for the passage of the work-webs W'v of the rear carbon-carrier B to be run into the machine without interference. The rear carbon-earrier B has only top blades, all] of the lowerblades being omitted.

According to another form of construction, as illustrated in Figure 5, the deflector plate and table are formed as a single sheet of material providingra table rportion 64 and curved upwardly,ias at 65, adjacent the rear of the typewriter, to form a deflector G6. Legs 68 may be fixed to the table portions 64 by means of screws and project upwardly to the side members 29 where they may be reduced and screw-threaded thereinto, as indicated at 69.. It will be seen by this arrangement that the free end ofthe webs WV', when out of use, may be led down at the rear of the machine and will be defiected by the curvedport-ion G5 onto the table portion 64, where they will be carried with frame 24 asthe sameV travels during the movements of the carriage."
TWhen the webs lV vof the rear carbon-car-- rier are out of use, the webs are generally thrown over the rear of said carrier, so as not to interfere with the manipulation of the front carbon-carrier.
