This invention relates to an electrical fiX- ture-backing hanger or mounting, and the primary object of the same is to provide a simple and effective means for attachment to building components such as floor joists, side wall studding or other supports, or for disposition in rear of tiling, and having a comparatively small maximum transverse extent to permit the same to be inserted through an opening materially reduced relatively to large openings ordinarily formed in plaster or other coverings or in tiling or through partitions for insertion and placement of devices now commonly used.
A further object of the invention is to provide a backing hanger or mounting with attaching members that may be disposed in various bent positions for convenience in securing the backing to floor joists, studding or other supporting means, with such resistance as to adapt the improved hanger or mounting to positively and reliably sustain the weight of an electrical fixture either in a vertically depending position, an outwardly projecting position relatively to a side wall or partition, or at an angle to the supporting means therefor. A still further object of the invention is to provide a backing hanger or mounting having freely movable means for securing an electrical appliance thereto, whereby the transverse extent of the improved device may be materially reduced, to adapt the same for insertion through a comparatively small opening formed in a wall coverin with material advantages in subsequentl covering said opening either by a portion of the electrical appliance secured to the improved device or by other means,
With these and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the preferred construction and arrangement of the several parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

main member or component of the improved backing hanger or mounting.
llhe improv d backing hanger or mounting comprises oppositely extending securing members or bendable arms 5, which are normally parallel and extend from a central or struck up body 7, which is fully open at the bottom, the said members or arms 5 extending away from opposite end edges of the central body 7 in reverse directions and preferably of equal length. Through the lower portions of the opposite side members 8 of the body member 7 openings 9 are formed in transverse alinement. Thelmembers or arms 5 are comparatively ri 'id but may be bent to accommodate the application thereof to various building, floor or ceiling and side wall components. Pivotally mounted within the body member 7 is a screw-threaded nipple or attaching member 10 having a pivot pin 11 extending transversely through the head 12 thereof and also through the opposite openings 9 in the sides of the body member 7, the opposite ends of the pivot pin 11 being swaged or headed over as clearly shown by Figs. 1 and 2. The screw-threaded nipple or attaching member 10 is free to swing in either longitudinal direction within the body 7 member 7 and be disposed in a plane parallel to the members or arms 5. As shown by Fig. 2, the nipple or attaching member 10 is preferably of tubular form, though the structure thereof is not restricted in this particular, and the purpose of the same is to engage a screw-threaded opening in an electrical lixture, as for instance, a loom or conduit holder as shownin dotted lines. It will be understood that the nipple or attaching member 10 may be secured to any other electrical appliance to which it may be adapted.
When the improved backing hanger or mounting is arranged for insert-ion through a small opening that may be formed in a plaster or other ceiling or side wall covering to position the improved device relatively to the floor joists, studding or other building components or structural features to which the arms 5 are attached, the nipple or attaching member 10 will be turned and held lengthwise in the member 7 so as to be in parallel relation to the members or arms 5, and after insertion of the device through the opening as above specified, the nipple or member 10 is released and projected through the opening formed in the Wall covering at a riglrt angle to the arms.
It Will be seen that the backing hanger or mounting embodying the features of the in ven'tion is of a very simple construction and comprises essentially tWo devices, namely, the main or supporting component comprising the integrally formed member 7 and arms 5 and the attaching nipple or member 10 freely movable With relation to said component and connected to the latter by the pivot pin 11. To accommodate various ap plications oi the improved backing hanger or mounting, the components thereof may be increased or decreased in dimensions as may be required to adapt the samefor use in connection "with yarious electrical appliances (littering in aveigl-it and structural characteristics.
It preferred that the parts of the improved device be made ot suitable metal, the main supporting component comprising the arms or members 5 being originally in the form of a blank and then bent into shape and the nipple or attaching member subsequently mounted and retained in connection therewith.
hat is claimed as new is:
1. A device of the class specified, comprising an intern'iediate' struck-up arched body member fully open at opposite ends and at the bottom and having integral arms projecting outwardly from the ends of the opposite sides in reverse'directions, the said arms being normally straight-and fixed With relation to the body member, and a screwthreaded attaching member mounted Within the intermediate struck-up arched body member and having one end extending partially into the concavity of the arched body member and pivoted at an intermediate point with relation to the said member to permit the attaching member to be turned and dis posed longitudinally with respect-to the body n'1ember partially Within the body :member and parallel with said arms.
A device of the class specified, consisting of an intermediate struck-up arched body member ha'v-ing opposite sides-cit "equal length and fully open at the bottom and at opposite ends thereot, said body "member having securing arms extending from the one end of each side in reverse directions from the opposite ends of the said body, the arched body member and the arms being of integral construction, the arms being rigidly attached to the body member and of bendable mate rial, and an attaching member movably secured Within the intermidate body member. A backing hanger or mounting comprising an intermediate arched body fully open at the bottom and provided with side members in parallel relation having arms extending from the opposite ends thereof in reverse directions, the body and the arms being of integral construction and the arms readily bendable to conform to the structural organization to Which they are adapted to be secured, and an attaching member havingone' extremity pivotally mounted Withinthe body between the sides thereof and the arms, to freely move in parallel relation to either of the said arms,
