SAFETY APPLIANCE FOR- GABIVIENT POCKETS.
Application fil ed September This invention relates to a novel safety appliance for pockets in clothing or wearing apparel; the prime object of my invention being to provide a simple, inexpensive, unobtrusive and efficient means, applicable to pockets in which articles such as fountain pens, pencils or other instruments are carried, that will effectively prevent the escape and loss from the pocket of such articles, regardless of what occupation the wearer may pursue, or of what position the pocket may assume incident to the various movements, performances and activities of the individual, or its use in practice.
Another object is the provision of means of the characterdescribed, as adapted for ready application to the mouths of pockets in the manner and for the purpose set forth, as more fully hereinafter explained.
These objects I attain by the method and means set forth in the following description and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, (1 sheet,) wherein Fi 1 is a front view illustrating my invention, a portion removed to show the interior; Fig. 2 is an inside view at the top of a pocket provided with my improved safety appliance; Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section, at line X X on Fi 1. Fig. 4 illustrates a manner in which the safety appliance material may be preparatively formed for ready and convenient application to use; and Fig. 5 represents a transverse section thereof drawn to an en larged scale.
My invention consists in the peculiar arrangement with the garment pocket of a safety appliance of the character specified comprising a piece of whipcord, twisted or braided twine, or equivalent flexible com pressible material, connected with a narrow textile tape or band of stitchable fabric, said cord disposed to extend across the mouth or opening of the pocket at a position Wholly behind the front finish welt adjacent to and approximately parallel with the top edge thereof and permanently secured or stitched to the interior fabric of the pocket; said cord affording an inwardly protuberant semi-soft ridge of flexible and laterally resilient nature whereon the usual clips used on pens, pencils, etc, will attain a much stronger hold than heretofore available.
Referring to the drawings numeral 2 indicates the fabric of a vest or garment wherein the pocket is arranged. 3 is the usual welt forming the outside finish at the mouth open- 8, 1925. Serial No. 54,958.
ing; and 4 indicates the pocket proper of usual convenient or desired dimension for carrymg such articles as a fountain-pen A, a pencil B, or other like portable articles, the same being individually provided with a suitable grip-finger or spring clip C, as commonly employed thereon.
Numeral 5 indicates an inwardly protuberant ridge comprising a cord of moderately compressible laterally resilient nature, arranged upon the exterior and protuberant entirely upon the inner sideof the outlying free port-ion of the pocket 4, said ridge being positioned transversely across the interior of the mouth opening below the top edge 6 of the opening, and there secured in place, preferably by sewing the cord, or connecting members assembled therewith, to the pocket fabric. The length of the section of cord 5 is limited to approximately correspond with the inside width of the pocket, so that it can be readily applied to the mg garment.
A strip or web of pliable fabric 7, abou one-half inch, more or less, in width, is assembled with the cord, affording oppositely outspread attaching members along the respective edges, said members being adapted to be stitched to or permanently secured flatwise to the pocket fabric, as at 8, above and below the line of cord, for confining the cord throughout its length, but permitting the lateral compression and resilience of the inwardly protuberant ridge 5; said attaching means also forming a fair finish for the interior of the pocket month.
For the cord 5, a whipcord, or similar twisted or braided moderately hard twine of textile fiber, and of about one-sixteenth to one-eighth inch diameter, more or less, preferably used. Such cord is sufficiently liable not to interfere in any Way with the use of the pocket, or the placing and withdrawal of the pencils, pens, etc, therein, while it is sufficiently compressible and resilient laterally to maintain a secure hold of pocket of an exist the clips C thereon, even when the position 7 of pocket is inverted.
As an eflicient and desirable method in the preparative production of this safety appliance, the cord 5 can be primarily united to or combined with the stitch receiving fabric 7 in long strips suitable to be out into lengths as required (see Fig. 4.). In some instances the cord 5 may be inwoven as a prominent outstanding warp member singly disposed along one side of a narrow woven webbing of the shown cross section form (see Fig. .5), and of indefinite length, and having thin marginal portions 7* suitably woven in flatside connection therewith for receiving the stitching 8. Such preparatively formed ma terial is adapted to be kept in stock. convenient for ready use, and to be cut to lengths as required for pockets of diiferent sizes. and readily attached in place by any person when making or repairing the garment. This construction I desire to include as a feature of my invention.
My invention provides a very desirable, inexpensive and highly efficient means for the purpose contemplated; and while it is entirely unobtrusive in external appearance, it is of much practical advantage and utility in resultant effect.
What I claim as of my invention and de sire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1.,A safety appliance for garment pockets of the character described, comprising in combination with the outlying portion of the pocket, a limited unitary section of flexible, moderately coarse laterally resilient cord, disposed inwardly protuberant wholly upon the inner side of and positioned transversely across within the mouth ofthe pocket, a strip of fabric arranged upon and affording oppositely outspread attachable members along the cord, said members being respectively flatwise secured to the inner fabric of the pocket above and below the cord, for conlin ing said cord along its alinement while permitting transverse resilience of the cord.
2. A safety means of the character de scribed, comprising a coarse flexible cord of laterally resilient nature, longitudinally disposed upon and primarily united along its side with one face of a narrow strip of pliable fabric, said pliable fabric forming narrow outstanding marginal wing-portions attached to said cord; in combination with the interior facing in a garment pocket. and positioned across the mouth opening, behind the facing welt, and means for securing said strip of flexible fabric and cord to the interior fabric of the pocket adjaccntly below the top edge of the opening.
3. In combination with a garment pocket having an exterior front-finish-welt across its face adjacently below the pocket opening, an applied inwardly protuberant retaining ridge consisting of a unitary flexible line of moderately compressible, laterally-resilient nature, and a pliable fabric forming oppositely outspread attachable members therefor; said retaining ridge beingpositioned upon and secured to the interior fabric within the mouth of the pocket, approximately parallel with and below the top edge of the pocket opening, wholly concealed behind said front-finish welt.
