By reference to ll'igure 1 ot the drawings it will be observed that the side members 7 ot the lever (3 are formed with stems inwardly ot their ends which are pivotally connected with the head ll, these stems being indicated by the numeral 11, and in providing. these stems the side members 'l' ot thelever are so formed as to provide portions 11.2 which entend at apin'oxiniately a right angle upwardly ,trom the remaining portions of the said side members ol. the lever. lt will be observed by reference to Figure 1 that the portions 1Q of the hand lever are suspended substantially vertical and the other portions which are indicated by the numeral 13 extend approximately horizontally and rearwardly and straddle the upper port-ion ot the body 1, being relatively braced at a point rearwardly of and spaced from the said body by a rivet 14;. The spaced members 7 of the lever G are integrally connected at the rear ends ot their portions 13 by an end piece 15 and the ineinbers are relatively ollset as at 16 in an outward direction adjacent to the rivet 11i so that a handle 17 is provided at this end oit the lever. It will now be evident that the lever is suspended from the head 4 tor swinging movement about the pin S as a pivot, and the purpose ot constructing and arranging the lever in the manner described willV new be explained.

It will be observed by reference. to Figures 2 and il ot the drawings that the spared members ot the lover VG st-raddle the arm 18 and the arm is `formed with a longitudinally -extending slot 23 through which and openings` in the stems 1l ot the side members i' otthe hand lever is fitted a pivot pin 211. lt will now be evident that when the lever is elevated substantially as illustrated in brolrn en lines in Figure 1, the pin 2a riding` in the slot 23 will ellect anV upward swinging movement ot the arm 18 whereas, on the other hand, when the lever 6 is swung downward-- ly, the pin will ride against the lower wall of the slot 23 and the arm will be swung downwardly about its pivot as shown in tull lines in the said figures.
At its outer end 'the arm 18 is formed with. a bearing sleeve 25 in which is rotatably mounted a shalt 2G. A pin Z7 is titled through this shalt and engages the under side ot' the said sleeve 25 so that the shaft is prevented from sliding upwardly in the sleeve beyond a predetermined position which 'that illustrated in Figure 1 ot the drawings. The lower end oit the shatt- 2G is fitted into a socket provided in a cyliir drical head Q8 which is provided upon under tace with spaced lugs 29 designed to engage the usual notches or grooves formed in the upper side ot the valve head l-l, the head 28 being held assembled with the lower end ot the shaft by a pin 30 which is .fitted diainet-rically through the head and the said lower end oi' the shalt. The upper end ot the shaft Q6 is preferably squared as indi cated by the numeral 31 for a purpose which will now be made apparent. ln practice, several of the heads 28 will be supplied with each valve tool and the heads will be o'l ditferent diameters and have valve head engaging lugs ont different sizes and dillerently spaced and, it' desired, as shown in Figure 1, each head may be provided, in addition to the lugs 29 upon one tace thereof, with lugs 32 formed upon its opposite lace, the lugs 29 and the lugs 32 being dil'lerently spaced and oi dilierent sizes, thus providing for a wide range of choice in the use of a minimum number ot the heads Q8.

From the Atoi-egoing description ol this embodiment ot the invention it will be uuderstood that in the use ot' the saine in eriading valves the lever G is to be .first swung upwardly to sul stantially the broken line position shown in Figure 1, the pivot pins 8 and 22 having been previously adjusted in the openings 5 and 20 respectively in llO cordunee with the engine, the valves of which are to be ground and likewise in accordance with the dimensions of the valves. It Will be observed by reference to Figure of the tool just described the pivot 24, in the extremo lowered position ot the arm 18 and lever 6, is located in rear of a vertical line passing through the pivot 8, the pressure exerted upon the lever being only sulicient to insure of stability ol the tool while being' operated to grind the valve.

Having thus described the invention, what claim is:

A valve tool ot the class described coinprising,l a body member havingl an arm at its loiver end provided with means to straddle a'valve stein and engage beneath the spring thereon, an arin pivotall y mounted upon the body, valve head engaging means; supported by the ar-ni above and in opposed relation to the stein and spi ineens ott the arm, lever nounted upon the body, and an ele "ien carried by the lever and slidabiy enactingwith the a-rin to effect swinging adjustment thereof, in the movement ot the lever, and thereby etiect adjustment ot the valve head engaging ineens into and out of active position, the pivot for the lever and the said element upon the lever which coacts with the arm being so relatively lorated o eli'ect locking' et 'he lever when ad'usted to the posit-ion in which the arm is held by the lever, with its valve head engaging means in active position.
