The present invention relates to a gate, and has for its prime object to provide a gate structure with novel means for causing the gate to open and close as a vehicle approaches and moves therefrom'respectively.
Another very important object of the invention resides in the provision of a trip actuated operatingstructure for opening and closing gates, which is so constructed as to be effective when the front wheels of the vehicle move thereover, and to be ineffective when the rear wheels of the vehicle move thereover. i
A still further very important obj ect of the invention resides in the provision of a gate structure of 'this nature which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and set up, strong and durable, compact and convenient in its arrangement of parts, clearly efiicient and reliable in its operation, not likely to easily become out of order, and otherwise well adapted 'to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be seen-that the numeral 5 denotes a platform from which rise the gate posts 6 in spaced relation, to provide an entrance. A pair of gates'8 are pivotally mounted, as at 9, to the bottom portions of the posts 6, so as to swing in a vertical plane into the closed vposition shown in Figure 4, or the open position shown in Figure 5. Levers 12 are rockable intermediate their ends in the hangers 18, so that the outer ends-of these levers are disposed under the plungers 11. Levers Y 14, are rockably mounted intermediate their ends inthe hangers 15 and have their-outer ends engaged over the inner ends ofthe lever 12, while the inner ends of the levers 14' are engaged over a flange 16, on the bottom 0f the plunger l0.
It will therefore be seen that when the plunger 10 is raised, the levers 14 are rocked and cause the rocking of the levers 12 to raise the plungers 11. A pair of treadlelevers 17 extend longitudinally and are pivoted intermediate their ends in hangers 18. The inner adjacent ends of the lever 17, are disposed under the ybottom endof the plunger 10, while the outer ends thereof merge into treadle platesv 19 extending through'the transverse slots 20 in the platform 5.
Thus it will be seenA that the parts are so arranged that when the front wheels of a vehicle approaching the gate way ride on one of the treadle plates 19, the lever 17 of said plate will be rocked and will force the plunger l0 upwardly and throw the gate to an open position. When the rear wheels pass over the treadles 19, the lever swings up only a short distance, not far enough to affect thev plunger 10, and this is effected by a'rnechanism which will be later described. After the vehicle passes through the gate, the front wheels of the vehicle pass over the treadle plate 19 0n the other side and cause the raising of the plunger 11,'so that the gates are thrown to a closed position and then, as just explained, the rear wheels pass over the treadle and nothing happens.
Referring now in detail to the means utilized to prevent effective actuation of the levers 17, attention is directed more particularly to Figures 4 and 5, wherein only one means is shown and will be described, as this will be suici'ent to obtain a. full understanding 0f both sides of the gate operating mechanism, in conjunction with this means for causing the lever 17 to be ineffective at every other actuation by a vehicle.
A lever 22 is roclrably mounted at one end as at 23,to the platform 5 and crosses over the yadjacent lever 17 A cable 24 is attached to the free end of the lever 22 and is trained over the pulley 25 and fixed to the block 25.

A cable 27 is fixed to the other end of the block 26 and is trained over a pulley 28, and has at its end a weight 29. lhe weight of the lever 22 is such as to cause the weight 29 to be' raised, as is shown in Figure 4. A catch of angular formation is designated by the nu= meral 30 and is suspended loosely as at 31 from the platform and extends through an opening 32 in the lever 22 and limits the downward movement of this lever. The upper portion of the catch is provided with a shoulder 33, with which one end edge of opening 32 will 'catch when the lever is raised. A
plate 34 is .hingedly mounted 7as at 35, tothe bottom of the block 26, and the free end of this plate has a cable connection 36 with the catch 30. Vhen the parts are disposed as shown in Figure 4 and the lever 17 is rocked to raise the plunger 10, the lever 22 is raised to the position shown in Figure 5, causing the catch to hold it in this position and this a1- lows the weight 29 to be effective so as to pull over the block to the position shown in Fi ure 5, and thus it will be seen that when t e lever 17 is raised the nettime, the plunger 10 is raised only a slight bit, because the block As said lever is raised the second time, however, it rocks the hinged plate 34, and 'causes the cable 36 to rock the catch 30, so as `to free the lever 22, and allow Vthe same to swing downwardly, thereby pullby way of example, since in actual practice` it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description. It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction and in the 'combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit orscope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages, 4
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is:
1. In a gate structure of the class described, a platform, a pair of posts rising from the platform, gates rockably mounted on the posts to swing in vertical planes, a plunger slidable through the platform to engage the inner ends of the gates for opening said gates, and a pair of plungers slidable through the platform to engage the outer ends of the gates when in an open position 'to close said gates, a pair of hangers depending from the platform one adjacent each of the pair of plungers, leversrockable in said hangers having the ends terminating under the pair f plungers, a second pair of hangers, a second pair of levers rockable therein having their outer ends Vextending over the inner ends of the first pair of levers and their inner ends extending to terminate over the lower `end of the first mentioned plunger, and a lever Vhaving one end under the first mentioned plunger.r
2. In a gate structure of the class described, a platform, a pair of posts rising from the platform, gates rockably mounted on the posts to swing in vertical planes, a plunger slidable through the platform to engage the inner ends of the gates for opening said gates, and a pair of plungers slidable through the platform to engage the outer ends of the gates when in an open position to close said gates, a pair of hangers depending from the platform one adjacent each of the pair of plungers, levers rockable in said hangers having the ends terminating under the pair of plungers, a second pair of hangers, a second pair of levers rockable thereinjhaving their outer ends extending over the inner ends of the first pair of levers, and their ends extending to terminate over the lower end of the first mentioned plunger, and a lever having one end under the first mentioned plunger, and means associated with the last mentioned lever to allow the same to be effective on the first mentioned plunger only at every other operation. e
3. In a gate structure of the class described, a platform, a pair of posts rising from the platform, gates rockably mounted on the posts to swing in vertical planes, a plunger slidable through the platform to engage the inner ends of the gates for opening said gates, and a pair of plungers slidable through the platform to engage the outer ends of the gates when in an open position to close said gates, a pair of hangers depending from the platform, one adjacent each of the pair of plungers, levers rockable in said hangers having the ends terminating under the pair of plungers, a second pair of hangers, .second pair of levers rockable therein having their outer ends extending over the inner ends of the first pair of levers and their inner ends extending to terminate over the lower end of the `first mentioned plunger, and a lever having one end under the first mentioned plunger, and a lever pivotally connected to the platform and crossing the last mentioned lever, a pair of pulleys, means mounting the pulleys, one to each side of the actuating lever, aA cable attached to the free end of the cross lever and trained over one of the pulleys, a block attached to the end of the cable, a second cable attached to the block and trained over the other pulley, and a weight at the end of the second pulley, a catch pivoted to the platform and extending through an openingin the crossed lever, a hinged plate on -the block, and a cable secured to the free end of the plate and the catch, said catch having a shoulder to hold the cross lever in a raised position.
4. In a gate actuating mechanism, a trip 5 lever, means for rockably mounting the trip lever, a cross lever, a means for rockably mounting the cross lever to extend over the trip lever, a block, a pair of cables attached to the ends of the block and extending thereie from in opposite directions, pulleys over Which the cables are trained, one of said cables being engaged with the free end of the cross lever, a Weight at the end of the other cable, a catch pvotally mounted at its upper end and extending through an opening in the intermediate portion of the cross lever having a shoulder adjacent the upper end, a plate hinged to the block, and a cable engaged with the free end of the plate and With the catch.
