ELECTRIGALLY-HEATED HAT BLOCK.
Application filed April 23, 1925. Serial No. 25,309.
This invention relates to improvements in hat blocks.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved hat block having an electrical heating device.
Another object of this invention is to pro vide an improved hat block of simple construction which is so constructed that crown pieces of various sizes may be substituted one for the other in forming crowns for hats of various sizes.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved hat block which is so constructed as to facilitate the mounting of the material, which is to be used in forming the crown of a hat, upon the crown shaped member on the hat block.
llith the foregoing and other objects in view which will be made manifest in the following detailed description and specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference is had to the accompanying drawings for an illustrative embodiment of the invention, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved hat block,
Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the same, and
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the hat block, the crown shaped member being shown as having been removed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts throughout, the improved hat block consists of a plate 10, which may have formed integral therewith or otherwise -secured thereto legs 11, serving as a support for the plate. The legs 11 are shown as having feet 12 in which are formed apertures 13 for the reception of screws 14, whereby the hat block can be rigidly mounted upon a work bench or the like.
The plate 10 is somewhat ovate in plan and has a recess 15 formed in its peripheral edge and a bead 16 formed on its top surface providing a shoulder above a horizontal fiat surface 17. A hollow crown shaped member 18 is supported upon the plate 10, and adjacent its base it is provided with an inwardly extending flange 19 resting upon the flat surface 1? and abutting the shoulder provided by the bead 16. Apertures are formed in the plate 10 and in the flange 19 for the reception of screws 20 whereby the hollow crown shaped member 18 can be secured to or detached from the plate 10. Upon the under side of the plate 10 there is mounted a block 21 of insulating material, which has a threaded socket 22 adapted to receive a threaded pin 23 mounted upon the bottom of an electrical heating element 24. The heating element 2 1 consists of a hollow cylinder of insulating material, upon which is wound a resistance wire as in the conventional construction. Electric current is supplied to the heating element 24 as by wires 25, which extend into the block 21 and are connected through the socket 22 to the wires upon the heating element. The block 21 is fastened to the plate 10 as by'screws 26, upon which are threaded nuts 27. The center of the plate 10 within the bead 16 supports a layer of insulating material 28, which may be of as hestos or the like and serves to assist in directing the heat from the heating element 24 against the interior surface of the crown shaped member 18. Apertures 29 are formed in the plate 10 and in the layer 28 of insulating material, which apertures constitute vent apertures to prevent sweating, and to permit the expanded and heated air within the hollow crown shaped member to escape.
It will be readily appreciated that the heating element 24 by means of its plug 23 receivable in the socket 22 is removable, and in this manner the heating element can be easily replaced at any time, in case it gets out of order.
The groove 15 formed in the plate 10 cooperates with the flange 19 to form a groove about the base of the crown shaped member 18. The material which is to be formed into the crown of a hat is placed upon the crown shaped member 18 ina moistened condition. Its lower edges are secured thereabout by a suitable securing member, such as a length of string, which is drawn about the material and which is disposed within the groove 15, thus maintaining the material in place u on the hollow crown shaped member 18 wliile it is being dried out and formed under the influence of the heat from the heating element 24.
It will readily be appreciated that because of the screws 20, crown shaped members 18 of various sizes may be substituted one for the other. The various sizes of crown shaped members have different widths of flanges 19. In the case of a large sized crown shaped member, the inwardly extending flange 19 extends inwardly a considerable distance until it engages the shoulder provided by the bead 16. In smaller sizes, the flange 19 is somewhat narrower.
From the above construction it will be appreciated that an improved hat block is provided, which is electrically heated, affording a quick heating of the device and a greater regulation.
It will be understood that various changes in the detail of construction may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined by the appended claim.
