INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINE.

The present invention relates to an internal combustion engine and has for its prime object to provide an engine of the multi-cylin der type, preferably of the eight cylinder type with the cylinders divided into two equal series, the series being oppositely disposed.
another very important object of the invention resides in the provision of an internal combustion engine of this nature with a crank shaft structure including an outer and inner portion and means for rocking the portion. a
Another very important object of the invention resides in the provision of amechanism in conjunction with an internal combustion engine of this type for taking off the power therefrom.
A still further very important object of the invention resides in the provision of an internal combustion engine of this nature vhieh is comparatively simple in its construction, compact in its arrangement of parts, strong and durable, powerful, economical, thoroughly efficient and reliable in its operation, and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
lVith the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Figure his a vertical transverse section' in series, one series being opposite the other so that there are always two opposed cylinders connected together and having their lower portions at the center provided with longitudinally extending slots 6. A crank easing 7 is disposed under the block and has journaled therein an outer hollow crank shaft 8 and an inner crank shaft 9. Cranks 10 project from the outer crank shaft 8 and cranks 11' project from the inner cranl' shaft 9 through slots 12 in the outer crank shaft 8.
Pistons 1d are reciprocable in the cylinders and the pistons of two cylinders which are connected together in opposed relationship are connected by a sin -1e connecting rod 15 with which one of the cranks 10, 11, is pivotally connected as at 16, the crank 10 connected to one pair, and crank 11 being connected with the rod of the adjacent pair of cylinders. The connecting rod 15 is formed in pivotal sections is indicated to advantage in Fig-- ure 5, the sections being pivoted together also at 16.
L The cranks l0 and 11, of course, extend through the slots 6. The cylinders 5 are preferably of the L-type having firing chambers 18 with valve seats 19 therein for the intake and exhaust gas and v'th these seats are associated valves 20 having valve stems 21 slidable through bearings 22 and 23 on ton of the cylinder block and terminating to be actuated by cam shafts 24 which are geared together as at 25.
Qne of the gears 25 meshes with a gear 26 whicn is operated by lever 27 eccentricallv engaged on one end of the inner crank shaft 2) to be rotated thereby. A beveled gear 28 is fixed to one end of the outer crank shaft and a beveled gear 29 is fixed to the adjacent end of the inner crank shaft 9 in spaced relation to the beveled gear 28 and beveled in an opposite direction.
A stationary member 30 about the shaft 9 upwardly and downwardly extending pintles 81 on which are rotatable bevel gears 32 meshing with the gears 28 and 29. One of these gears 32 has a crank 34 secured thereto for taking off power from the internal combustion engine.
Spark plugs extend into the firing chamber 18 and will be in circuit with a suitable distributor timed to operate the pistons in the cylinders on the usual well known four cycle principle. lVhen the engine is thus operating it will be seen that the piston reciprocates back and forth and rocks the cranks l0 and 11 to correspondingly rock the inner and outer shaft thereby rocking the beveled gears 28 and 29 in opposite directions and causing the rocking of the gears 32 and the oscillation of the take off crank 34.
