This invention relates to typewriting machines, and is shownin connection with a machine of the type illustrated in a atent to G. G. Going, No. 1,305,091, dated ay 27,
5 1919; although the invention is not limited to this type .of machines. In said machine the types are mounted upon the ends of slides, each slide carrying three types; and
type-bars are moved against the platen by to means of keys.
It is an object of the present invention, in this and other types of machines, to increase'the number of rows of keys, or in other words to eliminate one of the usual case-shift keys; and this object is accomplished in a manner that permits a reduction in the number of type-bars, thereby giving substantial advantages, and not only saving in cost and room, but also enabling the typebars to be directed less obliquely aga nst the platen, thereby improving the type-impressions on the work-sheets.
' According to this invention each type-bar is operable by two keys, so that an increase of the number of keys to say fort -two may be accompanied by a reduction 0 the number of type-bars to say twenty-one, thus gaining substantial advantages.

Due to the magnitude of the angles at which the end type-bars strike the platen, the capacity of such machines has been limited to about thirty type-bars and thirty type-keys, and, in order to provide a fullcom lement of characters, each type-bar with a ew possible exceptions, has three ty es thereon, necessitating the use of two shi t-keys, there being one key for each outer course of types. This type-guide is shiftable with each case-shifted type-bar. For this purpose each. type-bar shifting plunger is provlded with a lug or projection, WhlC-h lugs engage with a universal bar connected with -t'he type-bar guide to shift the latter to the 'desired position, so as to be effective to gu de the type-bar, at the printing point, in its case-shifted position. Provision is made to complete the shift-v ing of the type-bar immediately before the type-bar reaches the platen. To this end there is provided a yielding connection between each type-bar shifting plunger; and 1ts associated key-lever which enables a further depression of the key-lever to complete the printing stroke after the type-bar has been arrested in its shifted position by suit- 1 able stop-devices. By suitably locating the point of attachment of said connection upon said lever, the extent of the printing stroke of the lever exceeds the extent necessary to shift the type-bar, thereby assuring that such shifting is completed before the typebar prints. 7
It will be understood that with this arrangement the number of type-bars is decreased with a consequent decrease of the total angle occupied by the type-bars, which makes the angles at which the outer typebar's approach the platen more favorable, in other words, more nearly perpendicular to the platen.
In order to print with the upper-case types, the platen is shiftable to the groups v end a lever 38 pivoted on the bracket 30 and of upper-case types on'the type-bars.
The invention is herein illustrated as having a ease-shift mechanism of the type shown in the patent to G. G. Going, No.
. 1,308,411, dated July 1, 1919, with some modifications that are shown in the patent to- N. H. Anderson, No. 1,155,635, dated October 5, 1915.
Features of the present invention may be used with other kinds of type-bar machines.

This invention is shown for example in connection with a Noiseless typewriter. The invention is also useful with other varieties of machines. The type-action may, for example, be like that shown in the previously-mentioned patent to G. G. Going, No. 1,305,091, in which there is shown a machine-frame 10 having a keyboard at. the front and a movable platen 11 mounted in advance of the platen lland have reciproeating movements guided between plates 25 and 26. To bring about the shiftingof. the typebars 24, each of the key-levers 13 has pivot-,
ally connected to it a link 50 slida'bly mounted in a loop 51 at the lower end of a link 52, which in turn slides in a loop 53 at the upper end of the link 50, and is pivotally'conne cted at 54 to one end of an arm 55 swingable about a pivot 56 on a bracket- 57 fixedon a bar 58 of the plate 26. At its other end, the arm-55 is provided with a slot 59 which-engages-a pin 60 of a plunger 61 which embraces the type-bar 24 and guides its sliding movement. When its key 15 in: one of the two upper banks' is depressed,
it will pull its link 50 down, and through the reaction of a coupling spring 62 on the link 50, the link 52 will be pulled down, swinging the arm 55 about its pivot 56 and forcing the plunger 61 up, which in turn will lift the type-bar 24 so as to bring the type 46 in position toprint. The typebars 24 are guided at oneend by projections 71'and 72 on the plates 25 and 26," respectively, and laterally guided by the slotted plate 73 suitably fastened to the plate 26. To guide the type-bars and register'the types at the printing point, pro
vision is made of a type-registering guide formed by plates 74 and 7 5'. Means are provided to shift said guide co-relatively with the shifting of the type-bars 24. To this end,
thegplungers 61 are each providedwith a lug -76 underlying a universal-bar 77 fast on arms 78 fixed at one end to a rotatable rod 79 mounted in downwardly-extending arms 80 of the plate 26. .The'arms 78 have pivotally connected to themat their outer ends upwardly-extending rods 81, vertically movable in a slot 82 of an arm 83 attached to the plate 25. The top and bottom guideplates 74 and 75 properly spaced apart are fastened to the-rods 81. When a plunger 61 is operated to lift. its type-bar 24, the llig 76 will engage the universal-bar 77, swinging the arm about its pivot and lifting the rods 81 with the guide-plates 74 and 75 vertically upward. To return-the guide-plates to their normal positions, provision is made of springs 84 mounted on the rods 81 between .the movable guide-plate 7 5 and the fixedarm 83, so that when the guide-plate 75 is, raised, throughthe action of the lunger 61 engaging the universal-bar 77, t e springs 84 will be compressed, and when the'plunger returns to its normal position, the springs will expand and thereby return the guide-plates .74 and 75 and the universal-bar 77 to their screws 97. The lever 93 has a rearwardly- W extending arm 98 pivotally connected by a link 99 to an arm 100 integral-with a rockshaft 101 trunnioned in the machine frame.
A second arm 102 integral with the rock-' I shaft 101 is attached to a link 103'supporting a rail 104 on which the carriage 12 is mounted for movement. When the shiftkey 85 is depressed, the link 103 will be moved vertically upwardly, thereby lifting the carriage 12 and bringing the platen in position to allow the upper group of types to print. In order to insure vertical movement of the .carriage, it is guided by means of a link 105, shown in the patent to Anderson No. 1,155,635, and an upwardly-extendingportion 106 of a tie-rod 107.
To adjust the platen when webs of different thicknesses are used, there is a graduated plate 108 co-operating with an indicating finger-109'fast to a rearwardly-extend- .ing shaft 110 threaded at 111 into the tiefrod 107. By movement of the finger 109, the. platen will be moved to or away from the'types.
- The arrangement of the keys 15 and 15 is not limited to the manner shown in my application, but may be arranged in various ways. In another arrangement (Figure 5) the two middle banks of keys, which are most used, are connected to operate the type-bars only. The upper bank and the lower bank of keys, which are not used so frequently,are connected to also shift the type-bars while they are being actuated towards the printing point.
It will be seen from the foregoing description, that I have provided means whereby the number of type-bars in a type-writ- I ing machine may be reduced to substantially one-half the number of keys required to operate the type-bars, and thus I eliminate the necessity of reducing the keyboard of the machine in cases when, due to compactness of the machine or due to the peculiar design of-the type-bar mechanism, it may not be feasible or practical to have as many typebars as it'would be necessary to provide to suit the requirements of a standard keyboard.
The type-bar shifting mechanism which forms the subject of this invention, is illustrated in connection with a type-writing machine in which the type-bars are disposed for rectilinear travel, because this is one case in which the advantage of having the number of type-bars reduced, and the number of keys increased, is obvious, as it permits the building of a machine of this type having a full keyboard, while at the same time it reduces the striking angle of the outer type-bars. However, I do not wish to .bar, said means including connections to limit my inventionto this type 'of machine, as the same featuresmay be used 'to advantage in any type of machine, especially when for any reason it is desirable to reduce the number of'type-bars, or to increase the a plurality of types and each carrier having a case-shiftable guide for determining the direction of its movement toward the platen,
and means including a pair of adjoining key-levers for variably operating each typeone lever of eachpair to actuate the carrier, and connections to the other lever to case- 'shift a guide and interlock with the first lever for a joint depression of both levers to type and case-shift the type-carrier.
2. In a typewriting machine having a revoluble platen, the combination with a system of horizontally-reciprocable type-carriers, each having a plurality of types and a system of key-levers for operating said carriers, said key-levers associated in pairs, one pair for each type-carrier, one lever in each pair being connected for the normal operation of a type-carrier, of means for enabling the other lever in each pair to cause a type-carrier to present a different type to the platen, said means including a vertically-disposed guide individual to. the type-end of each type-carrier for altering the typing position of the carrier, said other, key-lever operatively connected to shift said guide,the printing positions of the types on each type-carrier coinciding with the printing positions of the types on all the remaining type-carriers.
3. In a typewriting machine having a platen, the combination of a series of typebars, each having a plurality of types thereon and eachtype-bar also having guiding. edges to direct it toward said platen, an individually shiftable bearing for each typebar in which said guiding edges move, means including a pair of key-operated levers for each type-bar for causing said typebars to print, and means controlled by one lever of each pair to shift the associated type-bar by shifting its bearing and thereby cause the type corresponding to said one lever to print.
4. In a typewriting machine including a revoluble platen, the combination with typebars, each having a plurality oftypes thereon and each type-bar having a reciprocable movement toward a type-registering guide at the common printing point, and a series g of key-levers arranged in pairs, one pair for each type-bar and one lever ofeach pair operative at all times to reciprocate the type revolubleplaten, the combination with typebars, each having aplurality of types thereon and each type-bar having a 'reciprocable movement toward a type-registering guide at the common printing point, and a series of key-levers arranged in pairs, one pair for each type-bar and one lever of each pair operative to reciprocate a type-bar, of means for enabling the other key-leverof each pair operative to change the reciprocating direction of said typegbar to present a caseshi'i'ted type and;si multaneously operate the first lever to present the case-shifted type to the platen, said .means including a typebar guide vertically reciprocahle by connections with-its key, and haying individual connections for simultaneously shifting the type-registering guide.
tLIn a typeweiting machine including a rcvolnble platen, the combination with a series of reciprocable type-bars, each bar having parallel guiding edges for directing it in a substantially horizontal path toward said platen, a plurality of types on each type-bar, and a series of key-levers arranged in pairs for each type-bar, of means operatively connected to one of said levers in each pair to reciprocate atype-bar to 'tvpe. and other means operativcly connecte to the other lever 01" each pair for changing the path of the type-bar and actuate the first lever to project the bar to the platen.
7. In a typewriting machine having a platen, the combination with a reciprocable case-shiftable type-carrier having a plurality of types thereon and a pair of co-operative key-levers, of connecting means whereby one of-sa-id levers directly operates said type-carrier to print, connecting means whereby the second lever operates to caseshift the. type-carrier and not print, and
means opcratively engaging the second lever by the first. lever, whereby both levers will operate in unison.
8. In a typewriting machine having a revoluble platen, the combination with a radial array of type-bars in front of said platen, each type-bar having a rectilinear movement from said array toward a common printing point, a plurality of types on each type-bar, a series of paired key-operated levers, eacl lever operable by pressing its own lie),
means whereby either "lever of each pair operates atype-bar corresponding to said pair, and means'whereby operation of one lever of each pair displaces the-operated type-bar and causes the type corresponding to the operated lever to print, said last-ment-ioned means including a stop-device to limit said displacementand a yieldable connection between said one lever and the related type-bar, said one lever at the point of att-achment of said connect-ion having a movement in excess of the movement required for said. displacement, which is thereby completed before the type-bar strikes.
