BOOK-IDENTIFICATIOII DEVICE.

This invention pertains to identification devices and more particularly to devices of such character which are adapted to be secured to books or paper binders.

i In certain industries, such as those which supply gas and electricity to the public, a number of men are employed whose duty it is to go to the'diiferent houses which use gas and electricity in a certain section or route and read the meters therein, making notations of such meter readings in a route book, said route book usually consisting of abinder having secured therein a number of loose leaves. Upon the back edges of these leaves ithas been customary to apply, as by stenciling, an identification numeral. i

Due to continual and rough handling by the meter reader and the practice of removing and changing some of the leaves in the binder, the identification number on the back edges of the leaves frequently becomes damaged to such an extent that it is diflicult and sometimes impossible to read the identification number thereon.

An object of this invention is to provide an identification device for books and binders of the aforementioned character which may be 'expedituously and securely mounted on said book or binders and which will be practically indestructable when in use.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple in construction, eflicient in operation and which may be manufactured at low cost.

Other objects of the invention will be apparent from a study of the following specification taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a binder having secured therein a plurality of sheets of paper and showing my device secured on the rear end thereof.

Figure 2 is an end view of the binder showing my device in elevation.

Figure 3 is a View taken cent-rally through the binder showing the manner of securing my device thereon.

Figure 4 is a side view of my device partly in section and detached from the binder.

Figure 5 is a fragmentary view partly in section showing one end of the invention.

suitable means such as cross strips 2, a plurality of paper sheets 3.

My invention comprises an elongated strip 4 of any suitable material, such as metal,.hav-

ing extending therefrom at its opposite ends and at right angles thereto, a pair of lugs 5 of equal length. On the side opposite lug 5 the strip 4 is also provided with an identification number 4. Lugs 5 are provided at a point remote from metal strip 4 with tapered openings 6 and 7.

A bar or rod 8, of less length than strip 4,

and having on one end thereof an enlargement 1 9 terminating in a tapering head 10, is adapted to be passed through the opening 6, the enlargement 9 serving as a guide for head 10. The tapered sides of head 10 areadaptdto engage the tapered walls of opening 6, thus acting as a stop to limit the inward movement of rod 8 therethrough. When in this position, v

The opposite end of rod 8 is provided with is flush with the an, enlargement 11 terminating in threaded tion 16 and adapted to receive the threaded end of bar 8 therein. The outer end of fastening device 13 is provided with a. head 17 having tapered side walls adapted to engage the walls of opening 7 in which position the outer face of said head is flush with the outer face of lug 5. Tapered head 17 is also provided on the outer face thereof, with a groove for the purpose of receiving a suitable actuating tool such as a screw driver.

The operationjof my device is as'follows:

When applied to a binder of the type illustrated in the accompanying drawings, secur-' ing element 13 is detached from rod 8 and said securing device and rod are withdrawn from their respective openings in lugs 5. Strip 4 is then positioned against the back edges of the sheets in said binder, the lugs 5 thereon extending forwardly over a portion of the upper and lower side edges of said sheets. The binder and sheets therein are then opened and rod 8 is passed through opening 6 in lug 5, and projected past the securing strips 2 of binder 1 adjacent that side of said strips 2 opposite strip 4:. Securing element 13 is then passed through opening 7 in lug 5, the larger portion 14 of the bore therein passing over screwed onto rod 8 until heads 10 and 17 have been drawn into and lie flush with lugs 5.

I In this position, the accidental displacement of the device is prevented by the cross strips 2 of the binder.

What I claim is v 1. A device of the character described comprising an elongatednietal strip, identification data carried on one side of said strip, transversely extending perforated lugs of equal length on the opposite side of said strip and at the opposite ends thereof, means carried by said lugs for securing the strip on a binder, said means comprising a rod adapted to be passed through the perforation in one of the lugs, a tapered head carried on one end of the rod and adapted to engage the walls of said perforation, a guide portion intermediate said head and rod for directing the head into the perforation, threads carried by the opposite end of the rod, and av securing elelugs, and means carried by the other of said lugs adapted for threaded engagement with one end of said rod for supporting same, said means comprising a headed shank having a bore therein open at one end, that portion of the bore adjacent the open end thereof being of greater diameter than the rod, a beveled shoulder in said bore and at a point remote from the open end thereof and'together with the aforementioned bore portion constituting a guide for the rod and a threaded portion of less diameter than thewrest of the bore adapted to receive the threaded end of the rod after the same has been brought into alignment therewith by the guide.
