Application filed J'une 6,
T his inventionrelates to improvements in car construction, and more especially to means for operating sliding doors of poultry cars from the inside. For example, a form of poultry car now in common use is provided with a central aisle with vertical tiers of coops on each side thereof. The ends of aisles, extending the entire length of the car, are closed by sliding doors. For pro-v tection, the ends of such aisle are ordinarily provided withvertical bars, the sliding doors being mounted on the outer side thereof.
1n the form of cars as heretofore used, it has been difficult or impossible to open and close the doors from the inside of the car.
One of the features of my invention the provision of improved means permitting the attendant inside of the car to open and close such doors at Will, thus enabling him to regulate the ventilation while the car is in motion without leaving the inside.
In that form of device embodying the features of my-invention shown in the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of one end of la railroad box car showing thesame as employed for the transportation of poultry, Fig. 2 is view taken as indicated by the line 2 of Fig. 1,
' Fig. 3 is a view taken as indicated by the line 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a view taken as in- As shown in the drawings, the center part of the body of the car is closed by an upper sliding door 10 and a lower sliding door 11, the former being supported from the upper rail 12by means of the hook hangers 13, and the lower door being similarly supported from the rail 14 by the hangers 15.
As shown in Fig. 2, 16 indicates the end wall of the car and 17 the end of the central aisle therein, the coops on each side thereof being indicated by 18, 18. The end of the aisle 17 is closed by vertical bars 19, 19 of common construction, the ends of said bars being preferably supportedby cross members (not shown), the ends of said cross members being supported by the vertical v VSuch means include a horizontal bar 21 lying inside of the bars 19 and preferably near the top of the door 10. This bar pro- 1928. Serial N. 283,437. i
`jects througha hole 20a in vone of the chan# nels 20 and its outer end is' indicated by 21a is bent outwardly and inserted through a strap 22 attached to thefdoor-as by means of vthe bolts 23, 23. `The'y other-'end of the bar 21 is bent inwardly as indicated by 2lb and thence upwardly to forma loop 21c around the guide rod 24. After the loop is formed, the rod is again bent downwardly and inwardly as indicated by 21d and its end is bent to form the handle 21e...
To one' flange of the channel 2O is pivoted a latch 25 adapted to hook over the portion embodiments of niy'invention, it is tobe unvso 'derstood that it is capable of many modifcations. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scopeof the invention disclosed in the appended claims, in which it is my intention to claim all novelty in my invention as broadly as possible in view of the prior art.
VVVhatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Pat-ent, is:
l1. In combination with a car having 4a central aisle closed by verticalr guard bars with a slidingdoor on the Voutside thereof, means for. sliding saiddoor from the inside of the car, said means including ahorizontal operating' bar lying inside of said guard bars and extending ,substantially the width of said aisle, one end of said bar extending beyond said guard bars and bent outwardly with its outer end attached to said door,.the Y other end 'of said operating bar being provided with a handle. Y Y i, t
2. In combination with a car having a central aisle closed by vertical guard bars with a sliding door on the outside thereof,
means for sliding said door from the inside .I
of the car, said means including a horizontal operating bar lying inside of said guard bars and extending substantially the width of the said aisle, one end of said bar extending beyond said guard bars vand benty outwardly meansfor sliding said door from the inside of the car,-said means ineludinga horizontal operating bar lying inside of, Said guard bars and extending substantially the Width o said aisle, one end of said bar extending beyond said guard bars and'bent outwardly With itsouter end attached to said door, the
` other end vof said operating'bar being provided with a handle, and means for slidably supporting the handle end of said operating bar, said means including` a horizontal guide rod and an eye attached tothe handleend of thelL operating rod and embracing said guide roc.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of May, 1928.
