This invention relates toa sewing machine braider or corder attachment and has for its object to provide an efficient device of this sort which may be conveniently secured to or removed from the presser foot of asewing machine. To this end the improved braider or corder comprises a transverse clamp by which the attachment may be secured to the presser foot of the machine, said clamphaving a depending portion bent at a right angle so as to extend horizontally for the proper attachment of a braid guide support which has an inclined forward portion on which the braid guide is slidingly mounted, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.

In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 a side View showing the braider attachment in operative relation to the presser foot and needle of a sewing machine. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the attachment and the sewing machine presser foot. Figs. 3 and t are opposite side views of the attachment. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the clamp and clamp frame, and Fig. 6 a detail plan view of the braid guide. 1

Referring to the drawing, 12 denotes the presser bar of a sewing machine and 13 denotes a presser foot attached to the presser bar by a nut 14 between which and a shoulder at the lower end of the presser bar the presser foot is clamped in a well known manner, said presser bar having at its lower end a. threaded tenon 15 for the reception of the said nut 14. The presser foot is provded with a slotted or forked forward end 13 the slot in said foot terminating at its rear end ina needle hole 13 Also the said presser foot is preferably provided on its upper side just forward of the needle hole, with a small transverse rib 13 The braiding or cording attachment comprises a clamp member 16 integral with which is a depending portion 16 which is bent at its lower end at a right angle to form a forwardly extending horizontal part 16* to which is attached, by rivets 17 the horizontal portion of a braid guide support 18 having an inclined upwardly extending forward part. The said clamp member comprises upper and lower jaws which may be closedtogether by a thumb screw 19 the lower end of which is tapped in the lower jaw of the clamp. It will be apparent that by means of said thumb screw the jaws of the clamp may braid guide consisting of a thin plate 20 having laterally extending fingers 21 and 22, the finger 21 being provided with an opening 23 through which a braid or cord, as gr, may be passed downwardly and then over the finger 22 as indicated in Fig. 1. The braid guide 20 is slidingly mounted, by means of shouldered rivets 24, on the inclined forward part of the braid guide support 18, sothatit maybe raised or lowered; and for convenience-in a effecting this raising and lowering adjustment the said braid guide is provided at its top or forward end with a small handle '25... d

When the braidguide is in working position, as indicated in Figs. .1, 2 and 3, the finger 22 will be brought adj acentto or in contact with a'transverse rib 13 on the presser foot, and in this position the said finger 22will practically close the slot in the forward portion of the presser foot so that the braid will be guided up close to the needle-hole 18" in the presser foot in such a manner that the braid will be held close to the needle26, thus permitting the work tobe turned at sharp angles to tilt the clamp portion over slightly in an upward direction, and if the finger 22 were at such time down close to the work this could not be conveniently done but by sliding the braid or guideupwarol on its support, and

thus removing the finger 22 somewhat from I the work, sufiicient space between said finger and the work is afforded to permit of this tilting or tipping movement of the attachment in mounting it in place on the presser foot, or

in removing it therefrom while in the working position of the braid guide it is desirable that said finger 22 should occupy a position 5 close to the work. The drag of'the braid through the finger 21 and over the finger 22,

when the braid guide is in working position, will tend to hold the'said finger 22 down close means of the handle 25, when the finger 22 is to be lifted from the work, or returned to working position.

In order to properly position the clamp on the presser foot the upper and lowermembers thereof areprovided with shoulders 27 so as to positionthe braider'laterally on the presser foot, the proper longitudinal or back andforth position of the braider being determined by setting the clamp against the presser-bar 12, as denoted in Fig. 2.

Having thus described our invention we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

'1.- A sewing machine braider comprising a braid guide support having an upwardly extending inclined forward part, a braid guide slidingly mounted on said inclined forward part'and havingtwo laterally extending fingers one abovethe other, the upper one of -saidfifingers being provided with a braid opening, and means for attaching the said braid guide support to the presser foot of a sewing machine. i

2. A sewing machine braider' comprising a braid guide support having an upwardly extending inclined forward part, a braid guide slidingly mounted onsaid inclined forward part and having two laterally extending iingers one above the other, the upper one of said fingers being provided with a braid opening, and means: for attaching the said braid guide support to the presser-foot of a sewing machine, said attaching means comprising'a clamp member having a depend ing portion bent at its lower end to form a horizontally extending part to which the said braid guide support is attached.
