gagement of gnidescarried by said plate with edges of. an inner relatively: small=;plate. Witlis-ueh constructions, it has beennecessaly to make more or less expensiveprlovision for y connecting the sections ofthe outer plate. It is an objeetof my invention however, to provide a new and improved construction in which both the outer relatively large plate and the inner comparatively small plate, may Veach be of one-piece formation.y In carrying out this end,a further aim is to provide a novel process of constructing a plate thimble, enabling the inner comparativelysmall plate to be properly engaged with the guides said guides to said outer plate.
With the foregoing in view, the .invention resides in the novel subject'matter hereinafterdescribed andv claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawing. Y
Fig. 1 is an outer side elevation of `a platethimble constructed in accordance Withmy invention. Y j l Fig. 2 is an inner side elevation.V F ig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1." Y,
Fig. 4; is a longitudinal sectional showing the manner of initially assembling the two plates. 1
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing a modified form of construction. 1 Y
Fig. L6 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but illustrating 'a dual` `form of construction.
The form of the invention shownin Figs'. 1,l 2, 3 and 4 will first be described. In these views, 7 denotes a flat sheet metal plate formed lwith va slot 8 and having its edges bent laterally to provide side and end flanges 9-10 respectively, saidv flanges all projecting in the same direction and serving as means for spacing the body portion of the plate 7y from a floor, Wall, etc. The corners of the,
plate are formedwithopenings 11y to re -ceive suitable attaching fasteners suchv las screws 12.

`sideedgesof the slot'S; and being inwardly .offset to provide guidesplforl an innerrelafl tivelyl lsmall plate 16, said platelhaving `a Withsaid slot L '1 vIn. constructing the device, the plate 7 withpipereceiving, opening-17Y forregistration its flanges Qlflandtheguides15-is-con-- l struct-ed as one unit and the platel` constitutes a separatev unit- .Tli'ento assemblethese two units, plate 161 gisflofngitndinally sprung and while sosplungi is slid.- aerossf-the free" f edge. airone vofthe anges-l', inta .engage-1 1 ment withthe guidesl, and as soon as plate 16 passes said flange, its. own resiliency causes it to snap inwardly within the confines of the flanges 9-,-10, the Vflanges 1() then verse strips'having their ends spot welded or otherwise secured at 14a to the outer plate 7a. In Fig. 46, a dual construction is shown, in
ner plates 16b being provided for closing these slots. Guides may be.. provided 4for Y 2 or the form shown in F ig 5, the guides 15b being identical with. the guides 4illustrated inv Fig. 2.
inner and outer plates by longitudinally `springing and .sliding the inner plates as' above described.
In all instances, the guides for the inner plate are sospaced from the vendv flanges of' the outer plate, as to permit assembly of the plate or` f' n Vwhich vthe outer Yplate y7" .is formed with a plurality of slots 8b, an equal plurality of in- ..these plates 1 6", of lthe Atype shown inv F ig.,
- It will be seen from: theforegoing that the inventionis of extreme simplicity and hence Y l may be manufactured and sold at small costi' However, it willV be equally as efficient asV .morel `expensive produced.
`I claim: Y' D 1. A device of the class described comprising a one-piece relatively 'large outer plate formed 'with a slot .and` havingits edges turned laterally in the same direction to provide side and end flanges, a one-piece A 7 constructions heretofore flanges, said inner plate having an opening` for registration with said slot, and guides for slidably mounting said inner plate, said guides being secured to said outer plate and lying against the inner side of said inner plate.
2. A structure as specified in claim 1; said guides being spaced from said flanges and disposed in such spaced relation with one ofv said flanges as to permit sliding of said, inner plate across the free edge Aoi? said one flange and into engagement with said guides upon longitudinal springing of said inner plate, the resiliency of the inner plate i serving to snap it inwardly past said one fla-nge Vto a position within the confines of said flanges, when moved inwardly to ay sufficient extent.
.said plate being formed with a slot which extends longitudinally of said plate, the end Y i peripheral flange to contact with a sup ort and space the body portion ofthe plate rom said support, the Vcorners of the plate being formed with openings to receive attaching fasteners; a relativel small, one-piece, resilient sheet metal pllate lying against the central longitudinal portion of said outer plate and disposed at the inner side ofthe latter, said inner plate coveringsaid slot and being formed with a pipe-receiving opening registering therewith, and stamped metal guide` plates welded to theinner side of said outer plate between the side flanges of the latter and said inner plate, theinner edges of said guide plates `being oll'set and slidably receiving the longitudinal edges of said inner plate.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
