This invention relates to improvements in weather strip constructions for windows, doors, and like closures.
The primary object of this invention is the provision of an improved weather strip construction preferably adapted to be used at the bases of closures, such as casement windows and doors where it is impractical to se cure a tight fit due to the factthat the closure such as the door or casement window is ordinarily hinged at the side. The doors and casement windows of this type permit the passage of draft and water into the room or house to the discomfort and inconvenience of the occupants. The invention comprehends the provision of a novel weather strip construction preferably carried by the sill or jamb of the casing in which the closure is received, which is self adjustingto expansion and contraction, due to the operation thereon of a novel yieldable cam or lifter which operates to move a portion of the weather strip construction into a sealing leak-proof connection between the jamb or sill of the casing and the door or sash or other closure, as the case maybe.
A further object of this invention is the provision of an improved practical type of weather strip construction adaptable for use along the base portions of hinged closures in the openings of window or door casings, in-
cluding means to seal the large cracks Whlch flcasement and it includes thefisill 10,upon which the spaced side-stiles-ll and 12are -mounted to definethe opening l5 in';which ordinarily appear in the openings below the base edge of the closure when it is shut; the improved device embodying improved means to seal the opening at the side stiles or jambs of the -window'or door casing.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description.

Referring specifically to the weather strip construction C, the same includes an attaching strip or plate 20, which is formed of sheet metal, and extends entirely across the opening immediately upon the top surface 21 of the sill 10, fromv the inner surface of one side stile 11 to the inner surface of the opposite side stile 12. This attaching strip or plate is preferably provided with a downturned flange 22 at one longitudinal edge thereof, preferably the edge which faces towards the inside of the building, and which edge 22 is sunk into the material of the sill, to provide a lealoproof sealed connection. At its opposite or outer longitudinal edge the protecting strip 20 is upwardly flanged at 24, and then rolled outwardly at 25 to provide a barrel or hinged roll in the nature of a socket, wherein a similarly rolled portion 26 of a pivoted guard strip 27 is pivotally received in a rather loose relation.
The guard strip 27 is preferably of about the same length as the attachingstrip 20 and includes the preferably flat body portion 30, which at the outer longitudinal edge thereof is provided with the roll 26, rolled beneath and into the socket of the roll or head 24 above described; the outer facing edge 33 of the roll preferably being flat to lie substantially flush with the outer surface of the closure A when the weather strip is in a sealing position.
At its opposite or inner longitudinal edge the guard strip 27 is provided with a sealing upwardly extending flange 35, and at opposite ends the body of the strip 27 is similarly provided with upwardly extending side sealing flanges 36.
As to the attachment of the strips 20 and 27 on the sill 10, the attaching strip 20 is nailed or otherwise secured at 87 on the top surface of the sill with the flange 22 sunk into the material of the sill and the outer roll 26 spaced upwardly at the top surface 21 of the sill 10, in the outer rolled portion or flange of the guard strip 27 pivoted thereto. Thus the guard strip 27 normally falls by gravity until the edge at the juncture of the flange 35 with the body 30 rests on the top surface of the strip 20, and from which position the guard strip 27 may be elevated into an acute angular relation with respect to the attaching strip 20.
The sash A inwardly of the lower edge thereof is formed or recessed in a novel relation. The sash A for about one third of the thickness of the base frame thereof is not recessed, but has the normal clearance, shown recess is extended to the outer surface 42 of the sash 0r closure and is formed to provide an inwardly and upwardly sloping surface 44 from the outer face 42 of the closure A, which diverges with respect to the plane of the top surface 21 of the sill 10, and about the half-point of the thickness of the closure A the surface 44 terminates and the recess 46 extends sharply upwardly at and terminates in a dead end 47 which is disposed in right angled relation with respect to the plane of the top surface 21 of the sill 10; this surface 47 also being arranged parallel to the plane of the sash or closure in which the recess is formed. The recess in cross section may thus be said to be of L-shaped formation, and it communicates at the outer surface and the bottom edge of the closure but does not extend to the inside surface of the closure, but does extend from side edge to side edge of the closure. As a cooperative feature, side stile or jamb members 50 are provided which cooperate with the end flanges 36 of the guard strip 27, which are attachable at the inside surfaces of the side stiles 11 and 12 of the casing construction B, immediately spaced over the sill 10, and they are arranged to provide attaching flange portions 51 secured at 52 to the upright or side stile, and the lower portions 53 being bowed outwardly slightly in a downwardly facing relation to provide sockets 53" facing downwardly and opening for the width of the member 50, into which the guard flanges 36 slide upon the upward pivotal movement of the guard strip 27, to provide an effective seal of the guard. strip at the side stiles of the casing B, as can readily be seen from Figure 4 of the drawing.
As to cooperation of the pivoted guard strip 27 in the sash A, the same is adapted to be received in the recess 45 upon the closing of the sash A. The movement of the guard strip 27 into a sealing relation upon the closing of the closure A is entirely automatic, and the feature which renders the same automatic is the provision of a cam or lifter member 60, in the nature of a spring cam, and attached to the outer swinging margin ofthe closure A. This cam or lifter consists, as is illustrated in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawing, of a horizontal attaching portion 62, secured as at 63 on the lower edge of the closure A at the lower outer corner of the closure; the attaching portion 62 extending below the recess 45 and at its free end having the upwardly inclining cam finger 66 which is flexed into the recess 45 towards and away from the attaching portion 62 which overlaps below the recess 45, as is quite Ill) ing. The cam spring orlifter 60 in fact, is
formed of a piece of resilient metal, and the portions 62 and 66 may flexv with respect to each other, and due to the extension of' the portion 62 below the recess .45the cam may likewise flex adjacent its connection 63.
The portions 62and 6.6.of the lifter 60 are divergent, with their juncture facing to enter the space between the free swinging edge of the guard strip 27 and the attaching strip 20; the flange 35 being inclined when the guard strip 27 is closed, as illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings, so that the free end of the lifter 60 will engage the same and upon closing movement of the closure A will cause the guard strip 27 to be lifted upwardly in the recess, so that the flange 35 enters the upper extension portion 46 of the recess 45, into abutment therewith; the arm or finger 66 of the lifter 6O cooperating to resiliently urge the pivoted strip 27 into a sealing abutment with the lower edge of the closure A within the recess 45. This upward movement of the guard strip as above intimated also enters the side flanges 36 in the sockets 53" of the side stile socket members 50, to provide an effective seal for the weather stripping at the side j ambs or stile of the casing B.
From the foregoing description of this invention it is apparent that a novel type of weather stripping construction has been provided, which will stop leaks and drafts in the ordinarily large clearance space between the base edges of hinged closures and the jambs thereof. The weather strip construction is automatic in operation, including a novel spring cam lifter which will operate upona gravity closure portion of the weather strip construction to automatically adjust the weather strip construction to the space between the closure and the jamb, which may vary, and the weather strip construction is thus rendered self adjusting to expansion and contraction.
Various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be made to the form of invention herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.
I claim: j
1. In a weather strip construction the combination of an attaching strip, a guard strip hinged to the attaching strip, and closure attaching means for lifting the guard strip.
2. In a weather strip construction the combination of a sill attaching strip, a guard strip hinged to the sill attaching strip, and a closure attachable member for lifting the guard strip.
3. In a weather strip construction the combination of a sill attaching flange, and a guard flange hingedly connected to the sill attaching flange gravity operated to fall, into a collapsed relation above the sill.
I 4. In a weather strip construction the combination of a sill attaching flange, a guard flangehingedly connected to the sill attaching flangegravity operated to fall into a collapsed relation above the sill, and 1 cam closure means for attachment to a closure to automatically lift .the guard strip as the closure is moved to a shut relation above the sill.
5. In combination with a casing including a sill and side stiles or jambs, a closure hinged in the opening of the casing, a guard strip, means hingedly connecting the guard strip on the jamb of the casing, a spring cam member connected to the lower marginal portion of the closure for lifting the guard strip into sealing abutment with the closure upon shutting of the latter, said cam member including a resiliently supported cam finger which may flex incident to the lifting of the guard strip into sealing abutment with the closure.
6. In combination with a closure and a casing having an opening in which the closure is hinged, said casing including side stiles and a sill, a guard strip extending across the width of the opening, means hingedly connecting the guard strip in the opening upon the sill so that the guard strip extends entirely across the opening between the facing sides of the side stiles, said guard strip being hinged to fall by gravity to a collapsed rela tion over the sill, means carried by the closure for lifting the guard strip upon shutting of the closure into a sealing abutment with the closure, and means carried by the side stiles at the facing surfaces thereof into which the end portions of the pivoted guard strip engages in a sealing abutment when the same is pivoted upwardly incident to a sealed relation with the closure when the latter is shut.
7. In combination with a closure and a casing having an opening therein in which the closure is hinged at a side thereof, an elongated guard strip, means hingedly connecting the guard strip on the casing jamb from side to side of the casing, a spring cam member carried by the closure at the lower free swinging corner thereof for engaging the pivoted guard strip to force the same into a sealing abutment with the closure when the latter is shut, and means carried by the side of the casing for receiving the ends of the guard strip in a sealing abutment as the same is moved upward by said spring cant 8. Incombination with a casing having an opening therein and including a sill and upwardly extending side stiles and a closure movably positioned in the opening therebetween, an attaching strip secured on the sill from side stile to side stile, a guard strip hingedly connected to the outer facing edge of the attaching strip and being freely pivoted on the attaching strip to normally fall by gravity incident to a resting relation thereon ior guard strip, and means carried by the closure for moving the guard strip upwardly upon 10 shutting of the closure so that the upwardly extending flange at the free swinging edge thereof moves into a sealing abutment with the lower portion of the closure.
