Application filed October 19, 1927'. Serial` No. 227,238.
The present invention is directed to im provenients in automobile cleaning brushes.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character so constructed that the water for rotating the brushes will also be used for washing the automobile.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind so constructed that the brush can be rapidly rotated when placed upon the parts to be washed, and furnished with a supply of water during the rotation thereof to effectively clean the automobile.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind which is adaptable for various purposes, such as polishing and dusting numerous articles.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a circular brush head having a beveled peripheiy 2, said head being provided with tufts of bristles 3.
Engaged upon the brush head 1 is a circular plate 4 which is of less diameter than the head, said plate having lugs 5 carried thereby for engagement'iii recesses 6 formed in the head to interlock said head and plate.
The plate 4 is provided with a circular series of impeller blades 7, substantially triangular in cross section. The plate 4 is further provided with a centrally located circula'i' boss 8 formed with an opening 9 which coincides with the opening 10 formed in the brush head, the purpose of which will be later explained.
A disk 11 is employed and is provided with outer and inner vertically disposed annular flanges 13 and 14 which provide an annular fluid receiving channel 15. The flange 13 is provided with a plurality of tangentially arranged nozzles 16.
lithin the central opening of the disk 11 is pressed a ball bearing assembly of a conventional construct-ion which includes inner and outer ball race rings 18 and 19, there being ball bearings 2O between said rings which are maintained in proper spaced relation by the retainer 21. It will be observed that the outer ring has tight binding engagement with the flange 14 and the inner ring 18 snugly engages about. the boss 8.
A circular cover plate 22 is provided and includes a peripheral down-turned rim 23 having formed upon its inner face a plurality of grooves 24, said plate being secured to the disk 11 by screws 25. rll'he cover plate is further formed with a central opening 26 to accommodate the annular flange 27 of the nut 28, and this nut. engages a bolt 29 which is passed through the openings 9 and 10. said both serving to hold the brush head 1 lfixed to the plate 4.
The cover plate 22 has fitted thereto the inner end of the pipe 30 which conducts water under pressure to the channel 15. This pipe has fitted to its outer end a valve casing 31 in which is mounted a trigger operated valve 32 to control the flow of fluid to the channel.
A uid lead in pipe 33 is connected to the valve casing and has a hose coupling 34 upon its outer end, said pipe having a handle 35 thereon. f
Briefly, the operation is as follows:
Vater owing from the pipe 27 will enter the channel 15 and will pass in jets from the nozzle 16 for impact against the blade 7, thus imparting rotary movement to the plate 4 and brush head 2. The water passing between the plate 7 will be deflected by the rim 23 and owing to the presence of the grooves 24 will be subjected to a whirling action, and will obviously maintain the brush bristles in a saturated condition.
It may be desired at times to use the device for polishing, and iii which instance the brush head can be removed and the abrasive disk 36 shown in Figures 4 and 5 substituted therefor, and in which instance compressed air may be used as a motive fluid in lieu of water. It will be of course understood that various forms of brushes, dusters and polishers may be substituted for the brush according to the use desired.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
1. A device of the class described comprising a brush head, a plate fixed to the head and having' a series of impact blades carried thereby, a disk having inner and outer flanges carried thereby and defining a fluid receiving channel, a cover plate connected With the disk, the outer flange having nozzles therein, means for conducting Water to the channel for discharge through the nozzles upon the blades to impart rotary movement to the plate and thus the brush head.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a brush head, a plate lined 'to the brush head and having a circular series of impact blades carried thereby, a disk having inner and outer circular flanges defining a channel, the outer flange having a plurality of nozzles formed therein, a cover plate connected With the disk, a bearing surrounded by the inner flange and having inner and outer rings and bearing balls supported between the rings, the outer ring being held Hrm With the inner flange, a boss carried by the plate for fitting Within and frictionally gripped by the inner ring of the bearing, and means forv conducting Water to the channel for discharge through the nozzles against the blades to impart rotary movement to the plate and thus the brush head.
3. A device of the class described', comprising a brush head, a plate interlocked with the brush head and having a series of circularly aligned impeller blades carried thereby, a boss carried by the plate, a disk, inner and outer circular flanges Carried by the disk and defining a channel, the outer flange having nozzles formed therein, a ball race assembly encircled by the disk and including an inner ring surrounding and frictionally gripping the boss and an outer ring surrounded by and held rigid with the inner flange, a nut opposed to the boss, a boltpassing through the brush heady and boss for engagement with the nut, a cover plate secured to said disk and having a rim confining the blades, and means for introducing motive fluidt-o the channel for discharge through the nozzles against the blades, as and for the purpose set forth.
