Dec. 11, 1928. EfiQQfiES,
M. w. MCARDLE CONTACT DEVICE FOR ELECTRICALLY ENERGIZED IMPLEMENTS Filed March 18, 1927 Patented ill, 192?.
MICHAEL V7. IVIGLAEDLE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
Application filed March 18, 1927'.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a construction and mounting means for contact posts of an electrically energized implement which will enable the assembly of the .3 parts and their securement in permanent operative relation with the contact posts rapidly, and so they will be held without multiplicity of securing screws, belts, or other like fastening means. It consists in the elements and features of construction shown and described as defined in the claims.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a perspective view of a device embodying this invention shown mounted on a frame member of the implement to be served, being as shown, the casing of an electric iron;
Figure 2 is a section medial with respect to the contact posts as at the plane indicated by the line 2-2 on Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a plan view looking in the direction of the arrow 3 on Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a section at the line 4-4 on Figure 2;
5 Figures 5 and 6 are detail representations of familiar forms of circuit wire terminals for which the device is adapted.
Figures 7, S and 9 are plan views of? three elements of the mount for the contact posts.
Figure 10 is a perspective view of the supporting bracket.
The structure shown in the drum 'ing comprises a mounting member, A, which is a steel stamping comprising an oblong flat plate portion 20, from one lateral edge of which a lug, 21, extends in suitable direction for affording means for securement of the device on the frame structure of the implement served. Said plate portion has struckand folded up from its forward edge, near the ends, and from its rear edge at about the middle, lugs, 21-21 and 22, which constitute spring clips for engaging and positioning with respect to the mounting member the contact-post clamping plate, B. Said plate, B, is dimensioned for fitting between the spring clip lugs, 21-21 and 22, and has its edges notched at 31-31 and 32 for being engaged by said spring clips.
Upon the mounting member, A, there is lodged insulation, C, consisting of mica laminae conformed in general to the outline of the plate, B, said insulationhavingits edges notched as at 41-41 and 12 for engagement by and between the spring lugs 21-21 and 22.
Serial. No. 178,376.
The plate, B, has apertures 33-33, for accommodating without contact with the plate at the periphery of the apertures, contact posts D-D, and said plate has a third aperture 34, for accommodating without contact with the plate at the periphery of said aperture, a clamping screw E; and on opposite sides of the plate B there are lodged insulations F and (r, consisting of mica laminae conformed in outline to the plate 13, and having in their edges notches 61-61 and 62 coinciding with the notches 31-31 and 32 respectively, of the plate, for engagement of the spring clip lugs, 21-21 and 22, by which said insulations are held in position on the plate for registration of apertures 63-63 and 6 1 of the insulation wit the apertures 33-33 and 34 respectively ofthe plate, said apertures 63-63 being dimensioned in diameter for closely fitting the contact posts 3-D, and the apertures 6d being dimensioned in diameter for fittingthe clamping screw, The contact posts D-D are each formed with flat heads D which also have "lat shoulders (Z at the inner side for seating on the insulation F when the posts are inserted from the side on which that insulation stands through the plate and both insulations F and G; and the plate with the contact posts thus connected to it is centered between the spring clip lugs 21-21 and 22, with the side at which the flat heads of the contact posts stand facing the insulation C on the exposed side of the mounting member A. The clamping screw E, with a washer, 6, next its head, is then inserted through the regis tered apertures 34-3 1 of the plate, and 64: of the insulations F and G, and screwed onto the mounting member which has a tapped hole properly positioned for receiving the screw.
it will be seen that tightening of the clampin g screw will cause the flat heads of the contact posts to seat on the flat surface of the insulation C on the mounting member, and to be thereby positioned rigidly upright and parallel. V
For attaching the two circuit wires, M and N, to the'contact posts respectively, the most convenient means consists of washers, (Z-(Z, passed onto the posts respectively before they are inserted through the plate and the insulations thereon; and the circuit wires M and N are hooked around the contact posts between the washers and the heads of the posts, this being most conveniently done before the posts are inserted through the plate and its insulations, as described. But when it is necessary to connect the wires after the device is mounted in position for service, the screw E, being slacked, advantage may be taken of the slack to spread the parts for separating the washers from the heads of the posts enough to permit the introduction of hooked ends of the wire between the washer and said heads for hooking wires around the posts. If desired, the device may comprise wire-connect ing fiat eyes 80 entered on the posts against theheads and followed by the washers, said eyes having stems, 81, protruding laterally from the posts for attachment of the circuit wires in any convenient or desired manner, as by entwining or soldering; or the circuit may be readily connected by introducing such terminals between the washers and the shoulders of the heads when the parts are slacked. for that purpose, to be secured by tightening the screw E.
I claim:
