Description
WRINGER INVENTOR. E J06 roeder,
7- M A TTORNEYJ S. E. SCHROEDER Filed Feb. 28, 1927 Dec. 4, 1928.
V A I- J'zmon PATENT OFFICE.
SIMON E. BOHBOEDER, OI NEWTON, INDIANA.
WBINGER.
Application flied February 28, 1927.
M invention relates to clothes wringers and as for one of its objects the provision of means for quickly and easily relieving the pressure between the rolls of the wringer and at the same time disconnecting one of the rolls so that it can be readily separated from the other.
,It is a further object of my invention to provide a clothes ,wringer which may be substantially and ri idl constructed and which, while accomplishing the above results will contain few parts readily manufactured and assembled.
For the purpose of disclosing my invention I have illustrated an embodiment of the same in the accompanying drawings in which- Fig. 1 is a front or rear elevation, partly in section, of a wringer embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a partial end elevation thereof, partly in section, and
Fig. 3 is a detail section showing the locking mechanism between the front roll and the pressure applying means.
In the embodyment of the invention illustrated I provide a frame preferably formed of sheet metal and comprising a bottom channeled member 1 open on its under side and side channeled members 2 open at their tops and having on their inner faces slots 3 to accommodate the shafts of the wringer rolls. Arranged within the channels of the side members 2 are bearing blocks 4 on which are adapted to-rest the ends of the shaft 5 of the bottom roller 6. One of the side members has its outer wall slotted as at 7 to accommodate the extending squared end 8 of the shaft 5 which is adapted to receive power applying means for turning the roll.
A flat spring 9 18 mounted within the chan nel of the bottom member 1 and is bowed at its center and adapted to bear through the medium of an ad'usting screw 10 on the under face of the top 0 the bottom member 1. The free ends of the spring are adapted to be connected to vertically extending slidable connector bars 11 mounted within the channels of the side members 2 and between the end walls of the members and the bearing blocks 4. These connector bars at their lower ends are provided with inturned lips 12 engaging beneath the free ends of the spring, and extending through these lips and the free end of the spring and connected to the top of the bottom member 1 are threaded members 13 having at their lower ends nuts 14 which act Serial No. 171,491.
as limit stops for the connector bars 11. The upper ends of the connector bars 11 are conveniently guided in their vertical sliding movement by pins 15 operatin in slots 16 in the end walls of the side mem ers 2.
Mounted above the bearing blocks 4 are bearing blocks 17 which are slidable in the channel ways of the channel members 2 and have mounted therein the shaft 18 of the upper roll 19 which roll is adapted to bear upon the lower roll 6 and be held thereagainst under the pressure exerted by the tension of the spring 9. To this end the bearing blocks are adapted to be connected to the up er ends of the connector bars 11 by a release 16 connection. Pivotally connected to each of the ed on a pivot pin 21 on the outer face of the bearing block 17 and to provide a rigid i mounting therefor. The bearing block may be faced with metal as at 22 which facing at its upper end has an inturned flange 23. Each of the arms 20 is provided with an out turned car 24 adapted, when the arm 20 is swung to place the ear in vertical alignment with the shaft 18, to enga e beneath an inturned car 25 formed on the upper ends of the connector bars 11 and when this engagement is effected, place the spring 9 under tension to effect a pressure between the upper roll 19 and the lower roll 6. The arms 20 are connected together by a top bail or cross bar 26 by which they may be simultaneousl operated and which is conveniently locate above the wringer roll 19 and in a position to be 7 readily struck by the operator.
The operation of the device is obvious. As long as the cars 24 and 25 are in engagement the upper roll will be connected to t e spring 9 by means of the connector bars 11 and the spring 9 placed under tension so that the upper roll 19 will be held in pressure relation with respect to the lower roll. As soon as the bail member 26 is swung on the pivot pins either toward or away from the operator the cars 24 will be disengaged from beneath the cam ears 25 thereby disconnecting the upper roll 19 from the connector bars 11 and likewise from the spring 9, relieving the pressure of the upper roll and permitting, if desired, the entire removal of the upper roll.
The lower roll may be readily removed after the upper roll is removed by tilting the same so as to clear that end of the roll 0 posite the squared portion 8 of the top of t e side member 2 and then withdrawing the roll axiall from position. In addition to the slot 7 in t e end wall of the side member to accommodate the shaft 5 the connector bar 11 is similarly slotted as at 27. To accommodate the swing of the arms 20 the side faces of the side members 2 are slotted at. their upper ends as at 28. i
The wringer may be convenientl provided with any form of drain boar and with any desired form of flow director 30.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a clothes wringer in combination, a frame, a lower roll mounted therein, an upper roll mounted therein and movable relatively to the lower roll. pivot member-s connected to the upper roll, pressure applyin means mounted in said frame below sai lower roll, connector members connected to said pressure applying means and having engaging lugs, and swingable members pivotally mounted on said pivot members and having engaging lugs arranged to engage the ln s on said connector members when the swmgable members are swunointo vertical ali ment with the shafts of the wringer rol s.
2. In a clothes wringer in combination, a frame, a lower roll mounted in said frame, an n er roll mounted in said frame and mova bIe relatively to the lower roll, pivot members connected to the upper roll, a bar spring mounted in said frame beneath said lower roll, connector members connected to the free ends of said spring each having an engaging lug, swingable arms pivotally mounted on said pivot members, and connecting ln s on said arms arrangedto be engaged with t 1e lugs on the connector members w en the arms are swung into vertical alignment with the shafts of the rolls.
3. In a clothes wringer, in combination, a frame, a lower roll mounted in said frame, an upper roll removably mounted in said frame and movable relatively to the lower roll, pivot members connected to the upper roll, a sprin mounted in said frame beneath the lower ro l, connector members connected to the ends of said spring and having en agin lugs and a swingable bail mounte on said pivot members and having enga ing lugs arranged to be engaged with the ugs on said connector members when the bail is swung to a position in vertical alignment with the shafts of the rolls.
4. In a clothes wringer, a frame including channeled side members, a lower roll having bearing blocks supported in the channel ways of the side members, an upper roll having bearing blocks slidably mounted in the channel ways of the side members, a bar spring mounted in said frame beneath the lower roll, connector baraslidably mounted in the channel ways of the side members and connected at their lower ends to the ends of the bar spring, engaging 111 on the upper ends of said connector mem ers and swingable arms pivoted on the bearing blocks of the upper roll each having :1 lug arranged to enga e the respective ln s of the connector mem ers when the swingable arms are swung into vertical alignment with the shafts of the rolls.
In witness whereof, I SIMON E. Sonnonnmr have hereunto set my hand at Newton, Iowa, this 24 day of February, A. D. one thousand nine hundred and twent seven.
SIMON SCHROEDER.
