Among the objects of the invention are to provide a new typeof packing and packing device 'adapted for use inwashing machines, particularly that having an agitator 1operated b a shaft extending lthrough the bottom o the tub; to provlde a construction wherein the packing surrounds the shaft and is located between the bearings for the shaft; to provide means, preferably in the form of a screw plunger, for applying pressure, from time to time,.as may become necessary, to compensate for theloss in packing owing to wear and leakage of the packing through the bearing or bearings; to providea packing of comminuted asbestos and graphite, with or without oil, so that the packing mass will be in a sort of fluidal state, whereby, when pressure is applied to the mass, as by a screw plunger, the mass Lwill flow about the shaft and into the bear.

Referring more in detail to the drawing, the packing device illustrated comprises a chamber 1 forming an integral portion of a late 2 bolted to, and closing the lower open- 1n of, a tub 3 of a washing machine. An agitator shaft 4 extends vertically through the chamber 1 and is'rotatably 'supported 1922. Serial No. 568,157.
bearing - hubs 7 and 8 forming integral portions of the plate 2 and a bracket 9 secured,
in a suitable manner, to the underside of the plate 2. To the upper endof the shaft 4 1s fastened a step 10 by means of the crosspin 1l extending transversely throu h the shaft 4. The step 10 is of pyramida form and Square in cross section. It extends upwardly above the bottom of the tub 3 and supports an agitator 12 which has a depending lhollow socket 13', also square in cross section, to fit upon the step. The step has a vlowerend portion l14 of cylindrical form' which rotatably fits into a circular opening provided in the upper Wall of the chamber 1, Against the lower end of the'step and surrounding the shaft, as well as fitting in the opening in the upper wall of the chamber 1, is a leather packing washer 15.
Upon the shaft 4 between the hubs 7 and 8, is keyed a pinion 16 which is in thrust engagement'with the hubs 7 and 8. This pinion is designed to be operated by a reciproeating rack driven by the operating mechanism of the washing machine, in order to give the agitator, through the media of the pinion 16', the shaft 4 and step 10, an angular reciprocation or oscillation within the tub 3. The lower end of the shaft has a grease cup 17 for supplyin asuitable lubricant, to the bearings, in -bus ings 5 .and 6, through theV bores 18, 19 and 2O provided in the shaft 4.
The bracket 9 is provided, at one side, with a plunger chamber 21 communicating with the chamber 1 by means of a passage 22 formed integral with the chamber 1 In the lower portion of the bracket 9 is provided a .threaded aperture designed to receive a screw lunger -23 into the plunger chamber 21. ithin the plunger chamber 21, the

The asbestos is cut into fine piecesl or shredded so las to provide a comminuted mass. The lower vend of the plunger 23 has a finger'piece 25 by which the plunger may be manually rotated to apply pressure to the packing material and cause the same to be forced along the passage 22 and into the chamber 1 around the shaft 4, and against 'the packing washer 15 and the upper wall of The packing material is semithe chamber. plastic and in a sort of la. fluidal State such and that when the plunger is operatedto stress the mass in the plunger chamber it will cause the packin to flow through the'passage 22 and into the chamber 1. In this -Way leaking of the cleansing or other fluids contained in the tub 8, down- Wardly through the opening in the upper Wall of the chamber, will be prevented.
In addition to the packing material acting as a packing also acts as a lubricant owing f packin in said chambers and passage, and a l toits oil and graphite constituents. At the same time the bearings'in'bushings 5 and 6 Will be maintained lubricated by the lubricating ingredients contained in the packing material.
