ALMON ROBINSON, OF WEBSTER,
MAINE.-
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTER-PACKAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,292, dated October 26,1875 application filed August 16, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ALMoN ROBINSON, of Webster, county of Androscoggin, State of Maine, have invented a Butter-Package, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to furnish a package for a roll of butter, or of other similar substance, which shall preserve the shape of the said roll, and at the same time prevent it from becoming soiled. 4
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows the package complete, and the remaining figures those parts of the said package which are indicated by the accompanying letters.
To make this package, take asheetof veneer, that of the roll which the package is intended to hold. This sheet of veneer, having been soaked in water until pliable, is then warped into the shape of a hollow cylinder, A, of a diameter equal to that of the roll of butter. The sheet of veneer should be of such a width that the edges will overlap when it is formed into the above-mentioned hollow cylinder A. One or more of the metallic bands 0 having been slipped over the cylinder A to keep it in shape, it is placed in an upright position upon any smooth surface, but preferably upon a support which projects into the cylinder a short distance. When desired, this support may be carved to form a stamp or mold. The said cylinder A is now filled by pressingthe butter into it with a wooden rammer. The cylinder A should not be filled quite to the top, as it is desirable to leave a space between the butter and the cover B. The upper surface of the butter may be pressed smooth with any convenient implement, or stamped with a stamp made to fit the interior of the cylinder the butter and the top of the cylinder A may be filled with dry salt, if desired.
The cylinder A being filled, a circular piece of paper or cloth or metallic foil, of a suitable B, is laid upon the 4 diameter to form the cap end of the cylinder A, and upon the said piece B the band C is laid, and then pressed down upon the cylinder A in such a manner as to bend down the edges of the cap B, and hold them securely between itself and the cylinder A. The position of the cylinder may now. be reversed, and the cap B secured by the band The bands used to keep the cylinder in shape while being filled may be removed before putting on the cap B and band C, unless the cylinder is of such a length as to need one or more of them to preserve its shape during transportation. The said bands'G O, &c., may be of wire or sheet metal.
I claim as my invention- The butter-package herein described, consisting of the hollow cylinder A, the caps B B, and the rings 0 0, combined and used substantially as specified.
ALMON ROBINSON.
