ADJUSTABLE CIGAR AND CIGARETTE HOLDER.

Application filed February 19, 1927. Serial No. 169,464.

The object of the invention is to provide improvements in holders for cigarettes and cigars and particularly in holders which can be altered at will to hold either a cigar or cigarette.

Another object is to provide a device of this character in combination with a detachable water reservoir and means whereby smoke from the cigar or cigarette is drawn by the user in the act of smoking through the water in said reservoir to extract from the smoke the nicotine therein, to cool the smoke, and to add moisture to it.

A further object is to provide a device of this character either with or without the water reservoir and so constructed that in one end portion of the shank there is a recess adapted to receive a cigarette, while surrounding said end portion is a sleeve which in extended position projects beyond said portion, is adapted itself to directly receive and operatively support the end portion of a cigar, and is also adapted in this extended operative position to be secured against longitudinal movement with respect to the said supporting end portion.

Still another object is to provide a device of this character comprising a shank having one end portion provided with a cigarettereceiving recess, the outer surface of said end portion being provided with two sets of screw threads spaced apart by means of a relatively smooth and unthreaded portion, a sleeve adapted to engage either of said series of longitudinally of said shank between and when out of engagement with either of said threads, and when in engagement with one set of threads said sleeve extending freelybeyond the end portion of said device and being itself adapted to receive and operatively' support the end of a cigar.

And a still further object is to provide a device of this character comprising the doubly threaded cigarette-holding end portion and cigar-holding sleeve above described, in combination with a shank having a single bore communicating with the cigarette-cigarholding elements, or a shank having a pair of disconnected bores both of which are directed laterally through one side of the shank into a smokeexpansion chamber, and a re movable water-containing reservoir normally closing the open end of said chamber for the purposes hereinbefore described.

In addition to the foregoing, the present before it reaches invention comprises further details of construction and operation such 'as are fully brought out in the following description when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a vertical longitudinal section through one embodimentof the invention in which the water reservoir, otherwise known as the Turkish pipe feature, is combined with the adjustable means to receive and support either a cigarette or cigar; and Fig. 2 is a similar view taken through a device of this character without, however, including the Turkish pipe reservoir feature.

Referring to Fig. 1, a shank 1 having a mouth-engaging end portion 2 is provided with a bore 3, extending inwardly from said mouth-engaging portion toward and connecting with a laterally and downwardly extending enlarged channel 4, which opens through the surface of said shank and into the interiorof a chamber 5, surrounded by a normally depending cylindrical flange or wall 6, to the lower edge portion of which there is removably secured a cup-shaped member 7, comprising a reservoir adapted to contain wvater 8 and provided preferably with a peripherally extending knurled flange 9, to facilitate inrotating the cup with respect to said wall to engage or disengage the threaded connection 10 between them.

Into the opposite end of said shank extends a relatively enlarged internally threaded bore 11, opening into a relatively narrower bore 12, which in turn has a normally downwardly directed outlet channel 13, into which is secured one end ofa tube 14, the bore of which tube communicates with the outlet channel 13, said tube being of sufiicient length to extend freely through the chamber 5 and into the cup 7 beneath the normal level of the water in the latter. The principle of this construction is such that smoke, drawn inwardly through the communicating bores 11 and 12 and passing through the channel 13 and tube 14, bubbles upwardly through the water 8, is collected in the chamber 5, and

thence passes through the channel 4: and

bore 3 to the mouth-engaging end 2 of the device, and thus is accomplished the object above referred to of removing nicotine from the smoke by means of the water 8, and simultaneously cooling and moistening the smoke the mouth of the smoker. Into the threaded bore 11 is secured one end portion of a nipple 15, the other end of which is secured in the internally threaded bore 16, of a member 17, having a relatively short bore 18, communicating through said nipple with the bore 12 and in the opposite direction opening into the relatively larger cigarette-receiving and supporting chamber 19, which for obvious reasons is preferably provided internally with inwardly tapering wall surfaces 20. The central portion of the outer surface of the member 17 is preferably relatively smooth and separates two sets of screw threads 21 and 22, the latter being adj acent to the shank 1 and the former being adjacent to the free end of the member 17, while beyond the latter, said last-named member is provided with an outwardly turned radial flange 23, or the like.

A sleeve 24- is longitudinally slidable over the flange 23 and is adapted to surround the member 17, besides which it is provided with a slightly reduced internally threaded end portion 25, which is adapted to engage either set of threads #1 or 22, as may be desired. The opposite freely extending end portion of said sleeve 2% comprises outwardly diverging walls, preferably provided internally with a relatively coarse screw thread 26, adapted to receive and firmly engage one end of a cigar (indicated by the dot-and-dash lines 27): when said sleeve is in extended position and its end portion is in engagement with the threads 21 of the member 17.

As is clearly apparent from Fig. 1, the flange 23 preventssaid sleeve'from becoming separated from the member 17 in one direction, while, however, afterremoving the cigar from said cylindrical member 245, the latter may be rotated so as to be disengaged from the threads 21, after which it is free to be shifted longitudinally upon the member 17. Thereafter it may be rotated so that its end portion engages the threads 22 in order to secure it firmly in inoperative position and prevent its vibrating or becoming loosened. Inthis position, the device is free to receive the end of a cigarette in the chamber 19, wedged slightly between the surrounding tapered walls of the latter.

Referring now to Fig. 2, a shank 28 is provided with an axial bore 29leading from the mouth-engaging portion 30 at one end, towards and into an enlarged internally threaded bore 31 at the other end In said bore is normally secured one end of a nipple 82, the other end of which is normally secured within the internally threaded bore 33 of a member 3 1-, having an axial bore 35, leading from said nipple into a chamber 36, adapted to receive and operatively support a cigarette indicated by dot-and-dash lines '37.. The outer surface of the member 34, similar to that of the member 17 in Fig. 1', is provided with a relatively smooth central area 38, separating an inwardly positioned threaded portion 39 and a threaded portion 40 adjacent to the end of said member and preferably increasing in diameter outwardly towards the end. 7 v

' Surrounding the member 84 is a hollow sleeve 41. comprising in general the frustrum of a cone, the smaller inner end of which is internally threaded at 4:2 and adapted to selectively engage either the threads 39 to retain said sleeve in its innermost inoperative position, or to engage the threads 10 and yieldingly mamtain said sleeve in extended position. similarly to the position of the sleeve 24 shown in Fig. 1. The device when arranged for. the smoking of a cigarette is as shown in Fig.2 with thesleeve withdrawn to its: innermost position, while to adapt said device for operatively holding. a cigar, said sleeve isextendedfreely into a position as before stated corresponding with that shown in Fig. 1,,when the end portion of a cigar may be inserted therein and'rotated in. such manner as to be engaged and retained by the threads- 13,. thus making the device readily adaptable for use in the smoking of either cigars or cigarettes.v 7

Having thus described my. invention, what I- claim and desire to protect-by Letters Patent of the United States: is-:

1.. A smoking device, comprising a shank having a bore leading from the mouth-engaging end and communicating with a recess adapted to receive the end of a cigarette, a sleeve surrounding and slidable longitudinally upon said recess end, whereby when said sleeve is. in one longitudinal position it extends freely beyond the adjacent end of said shank. and is-a-dapted to receive the end of a. cigar, and spaced threaded portions to yieldingly retain said sleeve in either extended or retracted posit-ion.

2. A smoking device, comprising a shank having a bore leading from the mouth-em gaging end and communicating with a recess adapted to receive the end ofa. cigarette, a sleeve surrounding and slidable longitudinally upon said recess end, whereby when said sleeveis in one longitudinal position it extends freely beyond the adjacent end of said shank and is adapted to receive the end of a cigar, said recessed end being provided with. spaced sets of. screw threads to yield- .ingly retain said sleevein eithcr extended or retracted position, and a radially extending flange carried by said shank. and cooperating with said sleeve when in one position to prevent the accidental separation ofsaid sleeve from said shank. i

3.
