1,692,880 M. WIRTH CLOTHES HANGING DEVICE Filed Sept. 28, 1927 J1EE .4 TTORNE Y Patented Nov. 27, 1928.
UNITED STATES MAX WIRTH, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
' CLOTHES-HANGING DEVICE.
Application filed. September 28, 1927. Serial No. 222A25.
The main object of this inventionis to provide a clothes hanging frame which is suitable for use in front of windows and is adapted to be horizontally extended when in use project outwardly from the window and when not in use to be rotated vertically to a convenient position where it will not form an obstruction or become a danger.
Another object of this invention is to pro vide a clothes hanging frame provided with rods from which the clothes are directly suspended, which rods are mounted slidably in the body of the device so that they can be transferred from their useful positions to the side of the device. The body of the device of dimensions which will readily fit into a window frame and the rods are therefore mounted movably in place so .that'a clear vision may be had through the window when the rods have been shifted to one side.
The above and other objects will become apparent in the description below, in which characters of reference refer to like-named parts in the drawing.
Referring bri fly to the drawing, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the clothes hanging frame.
Figure 2' is a side elevational view of the same.
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the shifter bar used for displacing the clothes hanging rods from the normally useful posi-' tion.
Figure dis a cross sectional view taken on line 1- of Figure 5. V
Figure 5 is an end elevational view of the frame showing the rods in retained position, in which they are used.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numerals 10 and 11 indicate the side bars of a substantially rectangular frame. These side bars have one of their ends pivotally secured to short uprights 12 and 13. Said uprights are provided with bolts 14: which are equipped with nuts 15 for securing these uprights to the window frame at the necessary location on the sides of the window frame. The side bars 10 and 13 each has a link 16 pivotally attached thereto which are pivotally connected to an additional link 17 The opposite ends of the link 17 are rotatably secured to the upper ends of the uprights 12 and 13 as in dicated.
The side bars 10 and 11 are joined by end bars 18 and 19 and these end bars, together formed.
with the side bars, form the rectangular frame within which clothes hanging rods 20 are supported. The bars 18 and 19 are each provided with a longitudinal channel 21. At spaced-apart positions along the lower surface joining these channels notches 22 are These notches extend downwardly in the end bars 18 and 19 and are adapted to receivethe pintles 23, which project from the extreme ends of the clothes hanging rods 20. A groove 24: extends parallel to the channel 21 at right-angles thereto and crosses the notches 22. In this groove a shifter bar 25 is slidably mounted in each of- theend bars 18 and 19. This shifter bar is provided with "cut-out portions 26, which has a rectangular the shifter ar in the opposite end bar is,
simultaneously moved toward the left. This simultaneous movement of the shifter bars is accomplished by joining opposite ends of headbars by flexible wires 31 which are trained aboutpulleys 32 located at each corner of the frame. 7
The frame when in use is extended horizontally from without a window and is pivotally suspended in such horizontal position from the uprights 12 and 13 which are rigidly attached to the window frame through the medium of the links 16 and 17. The clothes are, through some securement means, attached to the rods 20 and hang in suspended position therefrom. These. rods are prevented from shifting by locking the pintles 28 attached to the ends of the rod in notches 22. When these pintles are locked in the notches a wind disturbance of the clothes will not shift the rods. The frame of the device, consisting of the side bars 10 and 11 and end bars 18 and 19, is of a size which permits the frame to be shifted from the horizontal to the vertical. position within the window frame so that it will form an obstruction when not in use. W ere the clothes hanging rods rigidly mounted in the notches these rods would interfere with the vision through the window. The rods are therefore mounted movably in the frame so that clear vision may be had through the Window. Shifting-the bars from their normally useful position, indicated in Figure l, to one side of the frame adjacent the side bar 11 is accomplished by manipulating the flexible Wire 31. Moving this flexiblc Wire in the proper direction When the shifter bars are locked as indicated in Figure 5, in Which the cut-out portions are aligned With the notches will cause these shifter bars 25 to move in opposite directions in opposite end bars 18 and 19. qThis movement Will cause the inclined cam surfaces 27 to ride across the notches 22 and displace the-pintles 23 of the clothes hanging rods 20-out of the notches by lifting the same and thereby raising these pintles into the channels 21. When the pin tles are locatedinthese channels 21 the rods may be shifted manually to one side of the frame, thereby moving the obstructive members of the device to a position Where they Will'IIOt interfere Withthe vision.
It is to be noted that certain changes in form and construction may be made Without departing from the-spirit and scope ofthe in vention.
I claim:
1. In a clothes hanging device, a'rectangular frame, means for horizontally and vertically supporting said frame, rods spanning across said frame, pintles at the ends of said rods, said frame comprising sidebars and end bars, said end barshaving longitudinal channels therein, said pintles being movable slidable insaid channels, notches in said end bars communicating with said channels, said'pintles'bzeing registerable 'in said notches when i said end bars having longitudinalgrooves exsaid frameis locatedhorizontally, means for dlsplaclng said pintles out of said notches into said channels, comprlsmgshlfter bars,
tending parallel to said channels and at rightangles thereto, said grooves receiving said -shifterbars, said shifter bars having cut-out ,portions adapted toalign with said notches to permltentrance of said pintles, an inclined track boundin each cut-out portion on one side of the latter, said inclined track being adapted to ride across said notches to displace said pintles from said notches, and means for, simultaneously moving said shifter bars in opposite directions in opposing end bars.
In a clothes hanging device,a rectangular frame means-for horizontally and vertically supporting said frame, rods spanning across said frame, pintles at the ends of said rods, said frame comprising side bars and end bars, said end bars having longitudinal channels therein, said pintles being movable slidable in said channels, notches in said end bars communicating With said channels, said 'pintles being registerable in said notches when said frame is located horizontally,
means fordisplacing said pintles out of said notches into said channels, comprising shifter bars, said end. bars having longitudinal groovesextending parallel to said channels and at right-angles thereto, said grooves receiving said shifter bars, said shifter bars having cut-out portions adapted to align With said notches to permit entrance of said pintles, an inclined track bounding each cut-out portion on one side of the latter, said inclined track being adapted to ride across said notches to displace said pintles from said notches, pulleys at the ends of said side bars, flexible Wires trained about said pulleys and connecting'said shifter bars, said Wires being adapted to move said shifter bars in op- :posite directions inopposite'end bars.
