J. 5. HEMMING BASE FOR LOUD SPEAKER UNITS Filed Jan. 15, 1927 0 0% kgj emmzkg WITNESS: ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 20, 1928 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J'UHN S. HEMMING, OF SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, ASSIGNOR TO FIDELTTY RADIO COR- PORATION, OF SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH.
BASE FOR LOUD-SPEAKER UNITS.
Application filed January 15, 1927.
The invention relates to improvements in sound reproducing units especially adapted for use in loud speakers for radio receivlng apparatus, although the invention is capable of application to other types of sound reproducers. I
An object of the present invention is the provision of novel means for mounting and securing the diaphragm of the reproducer in place, so that the diaphragm will be housed in such manner as to render the same practically immune from tampering, yet will be readily accessible by the use of a proper tool.
\Vith the above and other objects in view,
the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illu trated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a sectional view showing a reproducer unit with the invention applied.
Figure 2 is a section taken substantially on the line 2--2 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the invention is shown in connection with a power reproducing unit, although it is not the purpose ot the present application to restrict the invention to a unlt of this type. The invention is equally well adapted for other types of units and the illustration is merely for the purpose of explaining the construction and advantages of the invention.
The invention as shown comprises a substantially cup-shaped member 10 which in cludes an annular flange 11, the latter extending around the edge and forming a mem- 0 her or receptacle of the character mentioned. The cup-shaped member is provided with a sound escape opening 12 which is surrounded by a threaded nipple 13 and the latter is adapted to have secured thereto a horn or like 4 sound distributing member, a portion of which is illustrated at 14.
Located Within the cup-shaped member is a diaphragm 15 of suitable character and Serial No 161,376.
the latter is spaced from the inner wall of the cup-shaped member by means of a rubber or other gasket 16. This gasket extends around the edge of the diaphragm 15 upon the inner face thereof, while a similar gasket 17 is likewise arranged upon the opposite face of v the diaphragm. Bearing upon the gasket 17 1s a flat ring 18 so that the gaskets 1 6 and 17 act to hold the diaphragm 15 spaced with respect to the ring 18 and the inner wall of the cup-shaped member 10.
The flange 11 is provided with an annular groove 19 and this groove has removably positioned therein a split spring wire retaining ring 20 which bears against the flat ring 18. The diaphragm 15 is thus securely held in place and may only be removed with the aid of a suitable tool to affect the removal of the ring 20.
The member 10 is designed to be placed in the top of a suitable receptacle 21 and is provided with an annular shoulder 22 which bears against the upper edge of the receptacle 21. Contained within the receptacle is a pair of electromagnets 23 which are operatively associated with the diaphragms as shown at 2 1, so that when these magnets are energized they will actuate the diaphragm in a manner well understood. Suitable means may be provided for holding the cup-shaped member 10 within the receptacle, the means shown consisting of screws 25 and 26, theformer having one end engaged within one of the threaded openings 27 provided in the ring 18 and its opposite end mounted as'indicated at 28, while the screw 26 is threadedly engaged in the other opening 27 and has threaded engagement with one of the brackets 29 of the electromagnets 23.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in it." rm, proportions and minor details of con-.. :ction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is In a reproducer unit, a receptacle, a cover for the top of the receptacle, said cover having a sound escape opening therein, a flange sembled, actuating means for the diaphragm, 1 carried by the cover and extending into the means within the receptacle to mount said top of the receptacle and having an annular actuating means, and means connecting the grove upon its inner face, a diaphragm Withflat g Wlth the 11183115 to mount the 1 21- in the flange and spaced from the cover, a phragm actuating means to hold the parts gasket bearing upon the diaphragm, a cross assembled. 15 sectionally fiat ring Within the flange and In testimony whereof I afiix my signature. bearing'upon-the gasketya split ring within 7 the groove of the flange to hold the parts as- JOHN S.
