NELLIE L. BUCKMAN, or SANTA ANA, CALIFORNIA.`
QUICKLY-DETACHBLE VALVE CAP. v
Application mea nee'emberes, 1925. serial Nov 77,225.
This invention relates to improvements in adapted to be applied totire valve stems.
An object of this invention is to provide a valve dust cap which canbe applied by merely forcing the cap downwardly over the valve stem and which will automatically engage and firmly gri the valve stem so that it Cany not be loosene or lost. y
A further object of the invention isto provide a quickly attachable and detachable i valve dust cap as above described, which upon slight rotation will close and effectively seal the end of the Valve Stem to prevent any leakaOe.v lalVith the foregoing and otherl objects in view which will be made manifest in the following detailed description and specifically pointed out, 1n the appended claims, reference proved valve cap is shown as applied, the,
valve cap being shown in vertical section,
Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the Lvalve cap when in its removed or detached position, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the valve cap, Fig. 4 is a vertical section through the shell constituting a part of the improved valve cap, Fi 5 is a top plan View vof the movable memer which is disposed within the shell,
Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the movable member,
Fig. 7 member,
Fig. 8 is a vertical section taken on the line 8-8 of Fig. 5,
Fig. 9 is a vertical section through the rubis-a bottom plan View of the movable ber washer or gasket disposed within the movable member.
Referring to the accompanying drawings wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts throughout, the improved valve cap consists of a cylindrical shell 10 having its top4 closed and its bottom open. The interior surface of the shell is cylindrical, and adjacent its bot-tom there is formed an annular recess 11, which may be formed by up-Y setting the bottom of the shell. Within the shell there is disposed a movable member consisting of a disc 12 which has downwardly extending resilient arms 13 arranged about its edges. These resilient arms are separated from each other, as indicated at 14, and adjacent their upperends they are of reduced valve caps and particularly to dust capsv width, as indicated at 15, so'that their resiliency or spring may be increased. On the bottom of eachv of the arms 13 there are formed inwardly extending jaws 16 which cooperate to present an interior annular surface of a diameterI substantially equal to the diameter of the reduced portion R of the valve stem S5 On the exterior or outer surface of each of the 'arms 13 there isV formed a projection 17, and each of these projections is capable of being received within the 1interior annular recess 11. The opposed faces of the jaws 1G are threaded, as indicated'at 18, and these threads are complementary" to the threads on the reduced portion R of the valve stem.' Between the disc 12and t-he inwardly extending jaws 16 there is positioned a rubber washer' or gasket 19, preferably having a depending annular flange 20 positioned against the interior surfaces of lthe arms 18.' On the bottom of the gasket 19 at its center there is preferably arranged a recess 21 `capable of receiving` the end of thestem or the pin of the valve disposed within the valve stem S.
The operation of the improved' valve cap is as follows: Vhen the valve cap Ais detached lor removed from the valve stem S, the movable member assumes the position shown in Fig..2, the arms 13 springing outwardly and causing the projections 17 to enter the recess 11.` In this manne-r the jaws are separated from each other a sufficient distance to 'permit the reduced portion R of the valve stem to enter between them. In applying the valve cap to the valve stem it is so positioned as to cause thereduced portion R of the valve stem to enter between the jaws and engage the bottom of the gasket 19. By forcing the shell downwardly, the lmovable member will be caused to rise within the shell 10, and as the projections 17 slide out of the recess 11, they cause the jaws to contract and engage upon the reduced portion R of the valve stem. The
initial movement of the projections 17 when slipping out ofthe recess 11 causes the contraction of the'jaws, and any 'further sliding sov In this manner the valve cap can be applied wardly overrthewalve stem. v \If.it,is` desired to pnventany leakage out d'the wlmastelll, the shell may be rotated after it has been applied. The threads 18 meshing with the threads on the retlueed-portienfR-eerewlhe movable member downwardly on the valve stem and thus cause theupper edge df-the valve stem to firmly engage the underside of the Gasket 19, and thus prevent any'leake. `I? thestern or pinof the ,valve within e valvestern projeetsfslightly, it isreceivable withintlie recess.2`l,fso that `it Willrnot depressed to Ymove the valve o the seat. lt will be found thatahalf orathreefquarber .revolution of the shelhis sufficient to canse the firm engagementbetween the valve stem and gasket. The .friction of the arms 13 y aloek for preventiraer ,themovable member Vagainst the interior surfaceof the-shell ssnffient to` canse themovable memberfto bef rotated wththe shell. Q y
Inrexnovng the valve cap,1t is merely neclesnaryxe liftthefshell 10,-eansingtlie movable memberto slide dewnsvardly within it ,and when it reaches a predeterminedposition, -in-thisinstance the bottemef-tlie shell, the ,arms 13 eztpaml causing the prejeetons `17 to enter the recess ,11, thnsiexpandingthe 'jaws andpermittin the removal of the cap. The
expansionof t `e arms 13 cansingthe projections 17 to enter therecess ,l1 else serves ,as
from dropping out of the Shell.
\ y It .will be understoodtthat'.various changes maybe made .in the detailfof construction without departing from thefspirt, pr seope'of lthe -invent1on as -deined lby .the appended engaged by the top of a valve stem and held@ ,1n position whensaid shell is forced downwardly thereover, lsaidshell, presenting' interior .surfaces vadapted to rengage upon said 'jaws and force Vthe same into en agement with `thesdes of said-valve lstem `vv en said shell `is orced thereover.
' 3. :Ina valveeap, a shell havinganinterior Vannular recess l'ormed therein adjacentthe bottom thereof, a disc disposed Within' the shell, depending resilient arms on said disc,

In testimony whereofl `have signed my ,name ,to this'l specification.
