LOCOMOTIVE CONSTRUCTION Filed March l0, 1927 3 Sheets-Sheet 3 Patentedl Nov. 20, 1928.
A Y 1,692,693 PATENT OFFICE.
UNITED. STATES HARRY M. PFLAGER, orsT. LOUIS, MISSOURI, AssIGNoR To COMMONWEALTH STEEL COMPANY, OF GRANITE CITY, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF NRW JERSEY.
LOoOMoTIvE CONSTRUCTION.
,'Apiiiiatien med march 1o, 1927. serial 110.174,273.
My invention relates to railway rolling stock and consistsfin an improved construction Of that part of the locomotive including and adjacent to the cross head guides.
The objects of my invention are to eliminate unnecessary fitting and alignment of separate guides and their supporting ,elements and the portion of the frame to wh ich they are applied to provide a structure in which the spacing of the parts will be more accurately maintained and in which there will be no joints or fastening elements to loosen up and affect the functioning of the arts or the separation of the members l5 mounted thereon; and to provide means for renewing worn surfaces in the cross head guide structure.
.I also desire to secure the above results and the maximum strength of the parts involved with a minimum amount of metal. Briefiy,
my invention consists in formingthe cross head guides integrally with their su porting elements and preferably by casting t e guides' and supporting elements with the locomotive frame. I
In the accompanying drawings which illus trate a selected embodiment of my invention- Figure l is a side elevation of the frontl end of a locomotive frame embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a one-half longitudinal top view of the same structure. l
Figures 3 and 4 are transverse vertical secas' tions taken on lines 3 3 and 4-4, respectively, of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a side elevation of a modifiedv structure. l
Figure 6 is atop View of the same. f A Figure 7 is a transverse'section taken on line 7--7 of Fi ure 5. j
In the drawings, the locomotive frame or bed is indicated at 1 and is shown as a casting with pedestal jaws 2, steam cylinder 3, boilcr saddle 4, and front deck plate 5, all formed integrally. Spaced from the cylinder 3 is a yoke member 6 having suitable brackets 7 upon which the valve gear may be mounted and having biake hanger lugs 8 and adownward extension 9. Integral with the yoke member are the forwardly extending upper and lower cross head guides 10 and 11, respectively, the forward ends of which merge' with the rear end of cylinder 3. The guides 10 andll are preferably channel-shape 1n V'the bed.
cross section as best lshown in Figure 3 and after being machined they have wear plates 12 applied thereto. These wear'plates are preferably of channel-shape also, and are Y detachably secured to the guides so that they 6U may `bevreadily removed and replaced when wornvwithout affecting the finished surface ofthe guide members 10 and 11. y
In 'the modification illustrated in Figures 5, t, and 7 the'forward ends of the cross head guides 13' are supported upon a bracket 14 formed integrally with the bed 15 and these cross head guides 13 are not united directly with the cylinder 16. With this construc-V tion the cylinder head 17 may be made detachable from. the cylinder in the ordinary manner and the head ma be applied and removed without disturbing the cross head guides.
The bracket 14 also-includes the brake hang- 75 er lugs 18, and the depending portion 19 of the bracket is located on the inside of the cross head guides, thus facilitating application and removal of the cylinder head.
Of course, this construction could be used even lthough the cylinder head were formed integrally with the cylinder, and this construction is also adapted forv use yin a structure in which the cylinder is removable from sis v Any of the cross head guides indicated may be -Of solid rectangular cross section, of I- shaped cross section, orof any other desired shape, and it is not essential to the embodimentof my broad invention that there should be upper and lower cross head guides as a single guide is sometimes used and could be cast integrally with the bracket or frame, or cylinder, or with an. two or more of these elements, and could he provided with a renewable wear plate similarly to the two cross head guides illustrated.
My invention contemplates the forming of the .cross head guides integrally with the brackets which may be applied as a unit to 100 the frame. y
My invention may be further modified by forging various combinations of the parts integrally with each other instead of casting them in one piece as contemplated in the pre-` fcrred embodiment of my invention.
I contemplate the exclusive use of all these and such other modifications of my invention as are included in the scope of my claims.
