Description

Nov. 13, 1928;
1,691,289 J. M. HOTHERSALL CONTAINER Filed April 18, 1923 Patented Nov. 13, 1928 PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN M. HOTHERSALL, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR T0 AMERICAN CAN COM- IPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A GORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
CONTAINER.
Application filed April 18, 1923. Serial No. 632843.
My present invention has general reference to containers of the type which are adapted to be opened by removal of a tear ing strip, or the like, beneath the top and in which a separate band, or collar member of flexible material, is positioned within the upper part of the body and adapted to prevent the spilling of the contents as the container is opened, as well as to provide a part upon which the severed top may be positioned as a temporary closure. More particularly, the invention is directed to the provision of improved mcans for securing the band, or collar member, within a container of rectangular, or oblong, shape in such manner that it will be held closely against the body wall to prevent the escape of contents between said parts and to render the construction more cilicicnt for the use contemplated. Also to at tain such results with economy of construction so that the container will be of commercial character capable of being furnished to the public without undue expense.
Other objects and advantages of the inven tion will be apparent as it is better understood from the followin description, which, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, discloses a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partially broken away, of a container embodying the principles of my invention;
, Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken through the container body and collar member and showing a relationship of these parts which frequently exists when the collar is not secured in place in accordance with my invention; and
Fig. 3 isa similar section, showing the collar in the exact and true position in which it is held when spot welded to the body wall.
I The container which I have illustrated, as an exemplification of my invention, comprises an oblong body I 21, which is permanently closed at the top and bottom by end members 22 and 23, which are double seamed, or otherwise positively secured in place. Said body is scored beneath the top on parallel lines 24 and 25, which set off a tearing strip 26 adapt ed to be removed by means of a key 27, or otherwise, to open the container.
A separate band, or collar member, 28 is positioned within the upper part of the body and is held therein against vertical movement by means of a bead 29 fitting within a corresponding head 31 formed in the body part 21 beneath the lower score line 24. This form of joint prevents relative vertical movement of said member 28, since the latter is of such size as to fit snugly withint-he body and cannot become entirely disengaged from the interior channel formed by the bead 31. With the oblong shaped can, however, there is a tendency for the collar to buckle inwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, along the sides of greatest length, this condition resulting from undue pressure on the side walls of the can, or from other natural causes. This, of course, results in a considerable space being left between the flexed or bowed part 32 of the collar and the perpendicular side wall of the body 21, and it is manifest that contents of liquid character would readily escape through this space. I, therefore, secure the collar member 28 to the relatively long side walls of an oblong can by spot welding at points 33, which may be spaced as desired, being shown, in the present instance, at two places on each side of the can. In this manner, the parts are held in the relationship illustrated in Fig. 3, in which the collar member is in tight sealing relationship with the body and with the head 29 positively held Within the body channel throughout the entire extent thereof.
It is thoughtthatthe invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, orsacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
A container, comprising a rectangular body adapted to be opened by severance of a. tearing strip beneath the top, a separate rectanguthe tearing strip, the spots of fastening being lar collar member having yieldablesides and well within the zone of yieldability of said open at both ends, positioned within said collar, the said collar being otherwise unat- 10 body and adapted to receive the severed end tached to the can body in said zone of yield- 5 of the body as a temporary closure after the ability.
container is opened, said collar bein fastened at a spot or spots to said body at points below JOHN M. HOTHERSALL.
