Description

-H. L. DGZENG, Lamp-Trimmer,
. 9 09 Patented Oct-26,1875.
N-FETERS, FNDVO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D (L UNI ED STATES PATENT OFFICE HENRY L. DE ZENG, OF GENEVA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-TRIMMERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,091, dated October 26, 1875; application filed April 16, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, HENRY L. DE ZENG, of Gene\a,in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Lamp-Trimmers, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to scrape the carbonaceous crustfrom the wick of Argand lamps, and gather the same into a receptacle, thereby prerentingthe particles passing down into the air-tube, and keeping the upper end of the tube clean and free from the accumulation ot'ten existing in lamps of this class.
I make use of a cup that is of a size to pass into the air-tube, and at the upper end there are fixed one or more scrapers, and above these a handle, so that after the cup has been inserted into the air-tube the instrument can be revolved and the crust of the wick and carbonaceous accumulation scraped into the cup, so as to clean the lamp contiguous to the wick and trim the wick ready for relighting.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a Vertical section. Fig.2 is an inverted plan, and Fi 3 is a section; and Fig. 4 is a plan of the trimmer in a modified form.
The cupa. is of a size to enter into the air-tube of the Argand burner, and this cup may be closed, as in Fig. 1, orot'open spring-tongues, as seen in Figs. 3 and 4:, so as to be bent to accommodate the size of the air-tube. The scrapers 0 0 are metallic blades standing outwardly above the cup, and placed diagonally to act as scrapers and gatherers to remove the carbon and deposit it in the cup o when the instrumen is made of the piece of metal forming the blade,
as shown in Figs. 3 and 4:. In this latter case the cup a is connected by tongues at the end of the plate passing through holes in the bot.- tom of the cup and turned up or clinched.
The trimmer may be drawn along a flat wick to gather the crust from the same; and in cases where the cup is made annular and ot' suflicicnt size to surround thewicli-tube the scraper will project from the cup inwardly and act to draw the crust outwardly from the wick into the cup.
I claim as my invention- The lamp-trimmer made of the stationary blade or scrapers c above-the cup at and below the handle 0, by which the instrument is manipulated, for the purposes and as specified.
Signed by me this 14th day of April, 1875.
