f My invention relates; generally toiiower` or Window -boxes and lcontemplates .more particularly a flower box which maybe used on the inside or outsideof a window.
. A principal object of my `invention is to produce a device of this class composed of` a. plurality-oftelescoping elements, thus makingit possibleto adjust the iower box to windows-of varying widths. v
A further object is to provide aA device o this character and comprising adjustable sections with means for. ii'xedlyV .holding f the sections 1in-.adjusted relation.- Y
A further object; is to produceja device of: this: character in Awhich thefmeans for ixed-lyholding the sections -in adjusted relation have the further function of permitting drainingof the .flower box.
. A Affurther object of .my invention. is to produce aiiiower boxcomposed ofa-v plurality of parts 'which'may be nested tofacilitate` .packing and shipping.
Anotherfobje'ct of my invention is to producea'device ofthis class .which isportable, and `has.means-whereby it may be 4easily car riedifroinf-placeto place n v A further object is to produce a device of this class having [metal chains whereby the liower box may be adjustably :fastenedt the front walls, being of the Doric order.
to a window.V
AnotherV object is to produce a device of this class having a draining means which will prevent the wall of the house or the paper of the room beneath the flower box from being streaked and stained and rendered unsightly by the drip watertherefroni.
Anotherobject of my invention is the production of a metallic flowerbox and drain tray which is ornamental, strong, clean,l sanitary, durable and'cheap to manufacture.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals indicate like parts in the several views z- Fig. `1 is a top plan view of my fiower box f Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, partsbeing shown in section; i
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of my vflower box;
on line 4-4 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail vin perspective showing clearly the telescoping of the sec tions of my device. t
In the drawings numeral 1 indicates'generally my improved adjustable flower boX Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken Y and 2 .the drain tray. I,The box islcom'posed ofse'ctions oriinembers 3 and 4,1having slidable or -adjustablejrelatiom -th'e .section -4 being.V shownnas telescoping into sectionf,
allowing. the box .to bey shortened or Ylengthened as desired to iitranyfwidth-of-window.
Sections 3 and 4 have, respectively,bottom i" portions 5 and 6, rear walls 7 .and8,ffront` walls 9.and. 10, and end wallsll and 12.
. Thebottom portions areeach Vprovided-with a row` ofVV apertures 13 and 14 arranged jlongitudinally of they sections, any aperture in either Asection registrable with those offthe other toreceive a'cl'amping bolt lffor bolting the sections in any desired position` and also serving as a strengtheningY means for f.
the box when in.use. :The .aperturesalso serve the further purpose of allowing the water from ythe window box to drain linto the drain tray. B e'adings 16^and '17,. Vcarried by the rear walls Tand 8 along theupi per edges Vthereof, aid in the telescoping. of
the sections and add strengthpto the v'structure when. so arranged, as also dothe bead- V ings 18 and 19 similarly/formedoiithe front walls 9 and 10. The latter, however, are
also made ornamental'in form,`rectangular orcircular incrosis-sectionas desired, those shown, together with the remaining parts of Suspension chains20 and 21 attached by eye clamps or like fastenings 22 and 28 to chains 2 0l and 21 to the sections 3 and 4,
the chains may be lengthened or shortened as required. f 5
Bails 24 and 25 are also provided at'the ends 1l and 12 near their upper edges, slidably fastened thereto by clamps 26 and 27 said bails being depressible flush with the upper edges of the ends 11 and' l2 to lend neatness to the device when in use.
The drain tray 2 receivesthe window box and is a shallow pan like structurey having low vert-ical sides which neatly fit the lower part of the box. Transverse ribs or battens 8() and 31, formed of metal and soldered orotherwise fastened to the bottom of the tray on the inner side, act as supports for the window box and allow space for the circulation of the drainwater. Corresponding to battens 3() and 31 are other ItY i similar battens 32 and 33 on the under side v of the tray and serve to supportthe saine o out of contact with the Window-sill or other pension chains 35 and 36 attached by means of eyes 37 and 38, and adjustment of the chains maybe effected by selectively enrv ploying the links as eyes.
I prefer that my flower boxvbe made of copper and the tray of galvanized sheet iron as being stronger and inore durable thanif inade of Wood or of any other ina terial. It ofcourse may be Vpainted or otherwise decorated to suit the individual taste of the user.
l. An adjustable Window box comprising telescoping sections, clamping means for said'sections, each section having apertures in the bottom portion thereof, the apertures of one section registrable Withthe apertures of the other, the said apertures permitting passage of said clamping means, said apertures also `functioning as drains for said Window boX, and a drain tray for said Window box. j
2. An' adjustable Window box comprising telescoping sections, clamping means for said sections, each section having apertures in the bottom portion thereof, the apertures of one section being. registrable with the apertures of the other section, said registering' apertures permitting passage of said clamping means for I'ixedly holding said sections in adjusted relation, said apertures also functioning as drains for said Windowf box, suspension chains on said Window box, adjusting means on said suspension chains,
a drain tray for said Window box, a drain ,clampingl bolt for fixedly holding said section invadjusted relation, said apertures also functioning as drains for said Window box, suspension chains on said Window box, adjusting means on said suspension chains, bails on said Window box, said bails being depressible when not in use, a drain tray vfor said Window box, a drain pipe for said drain tray, battens on the upper and lower sides of the bottoni of said drain tray, suspension .chains on said drain tray, and adjustable means on said suspension chains.
ln testirnony whereof, I have hereunto set niy hand.V l
