CAP.
, Application filed, April 29, 1927. Serial No. 187,456
The invention relates to caps in connection with which a detachable ear and neckprotector of novel construction may be used, to combat the rigors of the northern climates. Such attachable protector is of a construction that will enable it to be quickly applied when the conditions of the weather are such as to render its use desirable, and may be as quickly detached, when its use is not necessary.
The invention embodies means for securing the protector in position upon the cap, and
also for fixing the cap and its adjunctive device upon the head of the wearer, so as to afford a full measure of protection, and prevent disturbance of its position by the prevailing winds of winter.
It is designed to cover the ears, the sides of the head, and the sides and back of the neck, thus giving protection in a more extended degree than is achieved in devices of the class which are now in use.
The features of the invention will now be described, and the novelty thereofpointed out in the'appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, showing the cap and its adjunctive protecting device as positioned upon the head of the wearer.
Fig. 2 is a view in perspective, showing the ear and neck protector apart from the cap,
and illustrating its formation.
Fig. 3 is a vertical, sectional view through the rear part of the cap, at the point of connection of the protector therewith.
In the drawing, the numeral 10 indicates a box cap of usual construction, provided with a somewhat flexible headband or lining 11, and visor 12. Attached to the cap is a shirt depending from the sides and rear thereof, as a hood or protector 13., the band 145 at the top thereof partly encircling the cap, by engaging the sides and rear thereof in the horizontal plane of the head-baud or lining 11. An elastic strap 15 attached at its free ends to the forward ends of the band 14, serves to hold the protector in close engagement witl the cap, and assist in maintaining its position with relation thereto. A button or other form of separable fastener 16 connects the bands 11 and 14: at the rear part of the cap, and prevents separation at that point. If it be desired to remove the protector from its connection with the cap, the fastener 16 is loosened, and the band 14 may he slipped from its enga ement with the ca) where.-
upon the tension of the strap 15 will laxed, and the parts separated.
The protector 13 is formed centrally of its width at its rear side with a depending piece 17, of the outline shown in Fig. 2, to cover the sides and rear of the neck, and be received inside the collar of the person wearing the cap. The vertical as well as the linear dimensions of the protector 13 are such that when positioned as shown in Fig. 1, the front edges 18 and 19 cover the cheeks of the person wearing the cap, and completely enclose the sides and rear part of the head, and the ears as well. The front edge 19 at one side of the protector, is lengthened to form a chin strap 20, adapted to be passed under the chin of the wearer and returned to engage the front edge 18 at the opposite side. The end of the chin strap 20 is provided with a separable button or fastener 21, which is adapted to he brought into engagement with a stud 22 fixed upon a slide 23. which is frictionally held in adjustable position between the ends of a vertically disposed strap 24, attached to the side of the protector adjacent the edge 18. A loop 25, attached at its rear end to the' protector 13 adjacent the edge 18, is adapted to be brought over the upwardly extended end of the chin strap 20, and to be secured transverselythereof by a separable button or other fastener 26, so as to prevent disagreement of the position of the chin strap. A brow strap 27, attached at one end to the pro tector near the front edge of the same, is proided so as to be laid across the forehead of the wearer, under the visor and secured to the protector at the other side by means of a separable button or fastener 28, and so hold the protector 13 firmly in position upon the wearer, and thus conduce to his be rehead ofthe comfort.
Having thus described my invention. what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. A detachable protector for a cap, such protector comprising an elastic strap for attaching the same to the can and a depending skirt portion adapted to be inserted inside of the coat collar of the wearer, and enclose the ears, sides of the head and back of the neck, and having one side edge of the protector extended so as to pass under the chin, with means for attaching the extended end to the other side of the protector, and a brow band disposed under the visor ofthe cap and connecting the side edges of the protector across the forehead of the wearer.
2. A detachable protector for a cap, such protector comprising an elastic strap for attaching the same to the cap and a depending skirt portion adapted to be inserted inside of the coat collar of the wearer, and enclose the ears, sides of the head and back of the neck, and having'one side edge of the protector extended so as to pass under the chin, with means for attaching the extended end to the other sideof the protector, the said means including relatively adjustable members for connecting the said ext-ended end to the said other side of the protector, and a brow band disposed under the Visor of the cap and connecting the side edges of the protector across the forehead of the wearer.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name at Milwaukee, this 16th day of April,
- JOE FJLEICHT.
