This invention relates to motion picture 'screens, and particularly to screens for small sized pictures for home use. One object is to provide a screen in which the screen sur- 5 face may be protected from damage when. not in use. Another object is to provide such a screen which may be quickly and easily positioned to receive pictures. Another object is to provide'a self-contained outfit which is attractive in appearance. Still another object is to provide a sim 1e latch reversing structure adapted for hol ing the screen surface in a protected'or exposed position relative to the frame, and other objects will appear hereinafter, the novelfeatures being pointed out in the claims at the end thereof.
In the drawings, wherein like reference 'charactersdenote like parts throughout.
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of ascreen con; structed in accordanceiwith and illustrating one embodiment of our invention.
. Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary detail section on line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a similar view on line 33 of Fig. 1; and
. Fig. 4 is a similar view on line 44 of Fig. l.
In the preferred embodiment of our invention, shown in Fig. 1, themotion picture screen consists of a support designated broadly by 1. This support'comprises' a frame member having sides 2, a to 3, and a bottom member 4. Across the formed there is a protecting wall 5, which may be attached to the frame members in any suitable manner. In the present embodiment a rabbet 6 is provided in the frame for receiving the edges 7 of the protecting Wall, and the beading 8 is fastened over the edge 7, and a portion of the frame 2 to hold the parts in position. The frame and the back wall form a shallow box-like structure.
, For supporting the above described member on a table or similar fiatsurface we pro- 5 vide a pair of legs 9 which are adapted to swing upon pins 10'carried by the bottom frame member 4. These legs are provided with pairs of bearing surfaces 11. On the right hand side of Fig. 1 the leg is shown in a folded position in which it liesparallel to and against the bottom member 4 to support the screen. The legs are swung upon their pivots to the position shown at the left hand side of Fig. 1, inwvhich the leg lies at substantially right angles to the frame member 4.
ack of the frame thus MOTION-PICTURE SCREEN.
1926. Serial No. 117,096.
The screen surface 12 may be of any well known type, and stretched upon a member 13, which is preferably provided on the opposite side of the protective covering 14. This member fits into a shallow box formed by the frame and the back 5, and may be held to the support by the following mechanism.
As shown in Fig. 3, the top bar 3 of the frame is provided with a latch 15. This latch is carried by a stud 16, which is supported in the top bar 3'. Latch 15 terminates at one end in a hook 17, and at the other in a handle 18 which projects slightly from the face 19 of the frame 1 so that it may be easily manipulated. As shown in Fig. 1 a pair of these latches is preferably used. The hooks 17 are adapted to engage pins 20, which are carried to the member 13. This member in the pres-. ent embodiment of our invention is provided with four of these pins 20,.two at the top to be engaged by the latch members 15 and twoat the bottom to engage in apertures 31, which, as shown in Fig. 4, are preferably surrounded by facing plates 22.
The pins 20 are spaced on member 13 in such a way that the, screen surface 12 may be positioned to lie in a protected position inside of the shallow box formed by the support, or in exposed position, in which it faces away from the support in position for receiving a projected image, as is shown in Fig.1. I
As best indicated in Figs. 2 and 4, we have provided a flange 26 extending around the inside of the. frame. This flange is positioned so as to contact with the beading 27, which holds the screen surface 12 against member 13, or of the-beading 28, which extends around the protective sheet 14 covering the opposite side of member 13. When the screen is placed in the frame facing the back 5 it is spacedfrom the back by the contacting flange 26 and beading 27, and these (ilnembers also tend to keep out dust and irt.
The operation of the screen is simple. When it is desired to project pictures upon the screen surface 12, the latches 15 are swung out by the handle 18, thus causing the sides 25 of the latches to cam out the pins 20. When the latch is swung from the position in full lines in Fig. 3 to that shown in dot and dash lines, the top members 20 are released and member 13 may be removed from the frame by withdrawing the bottom pins as reeaeoc 20 from the apertures 21. The screen may be then reversed and reinserted into the frame Where it Will be held with the screen surface 12 ex osed by returning the latches 15 to their initial position.
For storing the screen when not in use the operation above described may be reversed, thus the screen 12 which may be easily marred by pressure, scratches or dirt may be placed in the box in a protected position. As the legs 9 may be swung into a position parallel with the frame member 4, the screen may be stored in comparatively small space.
Having thus described our invention, What We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. in a motion picture screen, the combine t-ion with a support includin a projecting Wall, a screen surface, a member adapted to carry the screen surface, movable connections between the member carrying the screen surface and the support, said movable connections being adapted tn support the screen surface in a predetermined position facing, but spaced from the protecting Wall of the support.
2. in a motion picture screen, the combination with a support comprising a frame, and back on the frame forming a box-like structure, of latch members carried by the frame, and apertures in the bottom of the frame symmetrically spaced at predetermined intervals, a screen Surface, a member carrying the screen surface, and a plurality of pins on the said member spaced similarly to the spacing of the apertures and adapted to be engaged by'the latches and by the aperextend into the boxlike structure, a screen surface carried by the member, and a movable supporting means carried by one of the two parts and cooperating with the other part, said means being operable to move the screen carrying member from the box.
4. in a two-part motion picture screen, the combination with one part including a support comprising a shallow box-like structure with the other part including a. member adapted to be carried by the support and tc extend into the box-like structure, a screen surface carried by the member, and a movable supporting means carried by one at the two parts and conperating with the other part, said means including latching members operable between the two members whereby the screen may be retained in the shallow box-like structure with the screen iurface protected or exposed relative to the Signed'at Rochester, New York, this 16th day of June, 19.26.
