. `Application mea vlwmfembere,` ieee. senal'No. 146,111;
` My `invention relates toV improvementsV in floose leaf binders and has forI` its object the provision of an improved construction of this character which is strong and feiicient in use and capable of economlcal manufac- Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangementsof parts hereinafter de- .v
scribed and claimed. I f i i The invention will bebest understoodby I reference to f the 'accompanying drawings lforming* a part of this r specification, .andan which,

Fi V10 is a. view of the other cover member detac ed'and, C if". l j Fi 11 is asection takensubstantially on the lme 11--11 of Fig. *10.
The form of construction illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5/inclusive comprises two cover members `12 and 13 detachably secured or bound together in book form.- To effect such binding, each cover member is .provided ad-` jacent its bound edge with projectinglstrlps `14E and 15 projecting toward the other cover member and cooperating with each other. Each of said strips Vconstitutes one leg of a corresponding angle iron. the other leg of Y which is suitably embedded and secured in the corresponding cover member as shown. The angle iron'leg 14 is provided at its ends with notches'l andthe corresponding cover member 12 is provided with two bowed-leaf` binding springs l17 as shown. The other strip for cover member 15 is provided at its ends with back-turned guard members 18 and 19 `arranged as shown to providea space `for the guard 19.V The latch spring .2l is. secured in reception .of the corresponding endsfofxtheVA strip V14C. Af pin 20 traverses thespace enclosed by the guard 18 and a` latch spring 21 Vis provided-tof cooperate with theopposite place by means of a rivet22and is ,providedh with alip or tang'23 projectingthrough av .corresponding opening in Vthefstrip 15 and arranged `automatically tol engage the corre- Vsponding notches 16 whenstrip 14 is inserted.4
The latch spring 21 is also `provided with-x..` an inwardlyturnedlip24 engaging-.around thev end"` 19,"` said lip 24 striking;the-:end 19 when said latch` springlis pressed-,back suiiic'ientlyto releasethe latclrlip 23 fromnotch 16 thus preventingfurther movement of said a latch` spring and consequent injury'thereto. j
By this arrangementit will be noted tha-ta plurality of loose leaves 25 may-be readily assembled or arranged` on. the 1 cover member lwiththeir edgesresting :against thetcorrespondingY strip 15. z :ITO bind `the leaves 25 f inplaceall that is necessaryis to insert and engage thelnotch lat the corres ondingend 1 of the strip letwith the pin 2O an then swing the other end .of the strip 14 ldownwardly un, tilthe notch 16 in the other end automatically engages the latch lip 1235n thus` locking lthe "jstripsfincooperating relatioiiwith each other. `This actioncausessprngs .17.10, rest.upon n i and bind the looseleaves25 in place. When-.V
it isdesired tofrelease leavesz25', alln thatjis f 24: to release the latch y23 from thecorrespondl `y`ingr notch 16 whereupon fthe spring 1t-.will
separate the covernie1nbers,thus permitting of ready removal of-said`leaves.- Y The modification illustrated in Figs. 6ft 11 inclusive providesfor suicient adjustment to accommodate a wide rangein the number of leaves 25 which may be bound.` To this end, one ofthe strips 14 i is provided with a plurality of notches 16 in its ends and the corresponding cover members Vare provided with a doublebowed leafspring 17 as shown.
Inecessaryfistfo lpress outwardly uponlip The other strip 15l is made also of a height Y corresponding with the strip 14: and isprovided with corresponding back turned guide guardsY 18 andj19 to receive the ends vof the strip 142.V In this. 'casetwo of the latch springs 21 are provided, one atpeach end.
Otherwise the construction is the same as that already described. 1 By this arrangement it will be noted that piles of loose lea-ves 25 .of various'depths maybe placed upon .cover member 13 and readilyfbound in placek by inserting the strip 14 in the space behind the guide guards 18 and 19 and pressing downwardly thereon. This will cause the latch spring 23 to engage automatically with the notches 16 and loch the cover 12 in binding position to hold said leaves securely, the different notches 16 permitting of a wide range of adjustment to accommodate differ ent numbers of leaves 25, as will be readily understood. When it is desired to release the leaves, all that is necessary is to press outwardly on one or the other of the lips 24 whereupon the spring 17 will force the cover member l2 upwardly when the latch 23 is raised from the corresponding notch 16.
YVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A binder comprising two cover members bound together in book form, each cover member being provided at its bound edge with a strip projecting therefrom toward the other cover member, the ends of one of said strips being bent back to form guide guards; a spring latch member on one end of said last mentioned strip cooperating with the corresponding guard, there being means on the other strip to detachably engage said latch; a detachable engagement between the other ends of said strips; and a leaf spring on one cover member and arranged to rest upon and bind leaves between said cover members, substantially as described.
2. A binder comprising two book cover members, each cover member being provided at one of its edges with an angle iron having one leg secured in the body of the cover, the
other leg projecting therefrom to form a sccuring strip; one of` said strips provided with back-turned ends forming guide guards, means associated with said `guidey guards and cooperating means associated with the ends of said other strip for detaehably securing said strips together to form a book with said cover members; and a leaf spring on one cover member and arranged to rest upon and bind leaves between said cover members, substantially as described.
A binder comprising two book cover members, each cover member being jn'ovided at its bound edge with a strip jnojccting therefrom at an angle; one of said strips provided with back-turned ends forming guide guards; means associated with said guide guards and coope ating means associated with the ends of said other strip for detachably and adjustably securing said strips together; and a leaf spring on one cover member and arranged to rest upon and bind leaves between said cover members, substantially as described.
4. A binder comprising two cover inembers bound together in book form, each cover member being provided at its bound edge with a strip projecting therefrom toward the other cover member; one of said strips being provided with back-turned ends formingr guide guards and the other strip being provided in its ends with corresponding notches; spring latches cooperating with said guards and provided with means engaging said notches; and a. leaf spring on one cover inember and arranged to rest upon and bind leaves between said cover members, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification. i
