CAN OPENING AND SEALING DEVICE.
Application filed August 30, 1924. Serial No. 735,078.
My invention relates to a can opening and sealing device, more particularly adapted for opening and sealing condensed milk cans, and the objects of my invention are: First, to'provide a milk can opening and sealing device which is particularly simple and economical of construction; Second. to provide a device of this class which is made of light fiat bar stock provided with right angle bent piercing portions at its ends; Third, to provide a device of this class which is provided with piercing portions at its ends of such construction that the cover of the can adapted to be opened is substantially cut and rolled at the pierced portions instead of unevenly rup-' tured as with the devices now in use; Fourth, to provide a device of this class of flat construction at its main connecting portion upon which advertising matter is adapted to be inscribed; Fifth, to prov1de as a whole a novelly constructed device of this class, and Sixth, to provide a can open-- ing and sealing device which is very durable, eflicient, and which will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.
With these and other objects'in view, as will appear hereinafter, my invention con-' sists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions, as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth 'in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon, which form a part of this application, in which:
' "Figure 1' is a side view of my can opening and sealing device positioned in a sealing position relatively to a can, showin the same fragmentarily and in section; Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof,- with-the section taken through 2-2 of'Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is evice.
Like characters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawings.
My can opening and, sealing device is 'formed from a piece of flatrolled bar stock *andfconsists of a 'fiatjconnecting portion 1 pzovided at its opposite ends with lugs 2 ntat 'a'right angleto the connecting por- .'tion 1. Saldf lugs are laterally reduced at the ends adapted to be inserted 'into they head ends of the can, as indicated by 3 in the drawings, thus forming shoulders 4 at.
ing the same.
the junctures of the reduced portions 3 and the main wide portions of the lugs 2, which shoulders are adapted to engage the outer s1 de of the head of the can adapted to be pierced. The outer ends 5 of the reduced portions 3 of the lugs are tapered at their lateral edges to the outer ends 5 forming relatively sharp cutting edges. These cutting edges at the ends 5 of the lugs together with their adjacent receding edges, when the device is positioned with the cutting edges against t e head of a can adapted to be opened and given a blow, serve as cuttlng means for piercing the head of the can rather than a means for irregularly ruptur- The method of cutting the openings in the can is illustrated best in Fig. 2 of the drawings. With this device there is adapted to be cut in the head of the can rectangularlyshaped holes, the two sides of which are straight and out clean and adapted to engage the two wide sides of the lugs, and the other two sides of which holes are rolled inwardly and adapted to be covered'by the shoulders 4 when the device is used for sealingthe can, as shown best in Fig. 2. 7
Upon the upper fiat side of the connecting portion 1, which is of considerable width, is adapted to be inscribed advertising matter if desired.
It is obvious from this construction, as illustrated in the drawings and disclosed in the foregoing specification, that there is provided a can opening and sealing device as aimed at and set. forth in the objects of the invention, and though I have shown and described'a particular construction, combination and arrangement, I do not wish to be limited to this. particular construction, combination and arrangement, but desire to include in the scope of my invention-the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as .set forth in the appended claims.
- each end thereof turned downwardly flatwise over its whole width and at right angles to said connecting ortion, said lugs being reduced, forming s oulders, and then extending straight and provided with cutting portions at their ends.
2. A can opening and. sealing device made of a single piece of flat comparatively narrow bar'stock bent downwardly fiatwise one at each end thereof over its whole width, the sides of said downwardly bent ends being straight and at right angles with the main portion thereof and merging at their lower ends into tapered can opening portions.
3. A can opening and sealing device made of a single piece of comparatively narrow flat bar stock bent downwardly flatwise at its ends over its whole width and at. right angles with its main connecting portion, the portions bent downwardly being reduced transversely a slight distance below said connecting portion forming shoulders adapted to rest on the head of a can, the reduced portions being pointed at their lower-ends for piercing said head, said shoulders being adapted for prying said reduced and pointed ends from said head. I
4:. A can opening and sealing device made of a single piece of comparatively narrow fiat bar stock bent downwardly at its ends over its whole width and at right angles with its main connecting portion, the portions bent downwardly being reduced transversely a slight distance below said connecting portion forming shoulders adapted to rest on the head of a can, said reduced portions extendinv strai ht downwardly a slight distance and provi portions adapted to pierce said head, said,.
ed at their lower ends with cutting shoulders being adapted for'prying said reduced and pointed ends from said head.
5. A can opening and sealing device composed of a single piece of comparatively narrow metal having a connecting portion and can piercin lugs at its opposite ends, said lugs being at and extending over its whole width transversely with the longitudinal extent of said connecting portion, said lugs being reduced transversely a slight distance below said connecting portion forming shoulthe reduced portions being pointed at their lower ends for piercing the head of a can.
6. can opening and sealing device made of a single piece of comparative}; narrow, fiat bar stock bent downwardly atwise at its ends over its whole width and at right angles with its main connecting portion, the portions bent downwardly being reduced transversely a sli ht' distance below said connecting portion orming shoulders adapted to rest on the head of a can, the reduced portions being pointed at their lower ends for piercin said head, said shoulders being adapted for prying said reduced and pointed ends from said head, said shoulders holding said connecting portion in spaced relation to said can, thereby providing a handle means for said can opening and sealing device.
7 A can opening and sealing device made of a single piece of comparatively narrow, flat bar stock bent downwardly at its ends over its whole width and at right angles with its main connectin portion, the portions bent downwardly bemg reduced transversely a slight distance below said connecting portion forming shoulders adapted to rest on the head of a can, said reduced portions extending straight downwardly a slight distance and provided at their lower ends with cutting portions adapted to pierce said head, said shoulders being adapted for prying'said reduced and pointed ends from said head, said shoulders holding said connecting portion in spaced relation to said can, thereby providing a handle means for said can opening and sealing device.
8. A can opening and sealing device composed of a single piece of comparatively narrow metal having a connecting portion and can piercin lugs at its opposite'ends, said lugs being at and extending over its "whole 1 width transversely with the "longitudinal extent of said connecting portion, said lugs being reduced transversely a slight distance below said connecting portion forming shoulders adapted to rest on the head of a can the reduced ortions being pointed at their lower ,ends or piercing the head of a can, said shoulders holding said connecting portion in spaced relation to said can, thereby providing a handle means for said can opening and sealing. device. ders adapted to rest on the head of a can, 7
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at San Diego, California, this 22nd day of August, 1924. r
