REFLECTOR-SIGNAL HEAD.

Serial No. 1437,6263v In the use of reflector signals for traflic guides upon highways, such as roads and streets, it is desirable that there be associated with the reflecting portion of the head 6 means for furnishing such information as it may be desirable to furnish. v p The general object of the invention is to provide a signalheadhaving a cover frame provided with means for outlining the signaling portion of the reflector and also having mean-s upon which lettering or insignia of one kind or another he placed for the purpose of furnishing information which ma be desired by those who may travel thehighways or streets upon which the signals may be placed. i

To these and other ends the invention com prehends the construction as hereinafter described indetail, illustrated in the drawing,

and pointed outparticularly in the claims.

In the drawing I have shown the'upper tion of a supporting column 1 upon which the signal head is mounted in any suitable manner. I

The signal head comprises a container 3 within which is located reflectors'et which preferably are of the central triple reflector type. For the purpose of securing these reflectors 4 in place within the container 3 of the signal head I have provided a sheet 5 of material suitable for use in the diflusingof the rays of light which are reflected from the reflecting surfaces of the reflectors 4. The

diffusing sheet 5 consists usually'of glass and it is seated against cushioning strips or pads 7 which are located within thecontaincr 3 around the outer edge portions thereof, as indicated in Fig. 3. For the purpose of retaining the sheet 5'and thereby the reflectors 4 in place I have provided retaining spring clips 8 the outer ends of which are secured to a flange 10 which extends outwardly from the outer or front edge of the container 3.- These retaining clips are located at intervals.

I have provided a cover frame, two different forms of which are shown in the drawing, of a construction which constitutes an important feature or element of my invention. In Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, the cover frame'comprises a hexagonal portion 11 upon the upper end of which is formed integrally therewith an extension 12 of rectangular outline, the inner surface of which preferably is depressed. The depressed portion is surrounded by a forwardly extending flange 13 andwithin the said depressed portion lettering '15 or other information-giving means is placed. In the particular construction as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the word Caution appears upon the saidextension 12. The cover frame comprising the part 11 ,with which the part 12 is integrally or otherwise rigidly connected, is secured in place to over-- lap the'joint between the diffusing plate 5 and the container'3 by means of bolts 16 which extend through the portion 11 and through the flange 10. The said bolts are retained in position and the heads thereof are caused to clamp againstthe portion 11 by means of provided with a rearwardly extending flange 20 WhlCh conceals the outer edge portion of the container 3 and constitutes a neat finish to the structure.

In the construction as shown in Fig.4 the cover frame is provided with an intermediate hexagonal portion 11 with which is integrallyformed an upper portion 12' like the portion 12 shown in Figs. 1 'and'2. The portion 11 of the cover frame shown in Fig. 4 is provided with a downward extension 21 of substantially the same structure, except as to dimensions, "as the portion 12'.- The downwardly extending portion 21 is provided with a forwardly extending flange 22 which surrounds the depressed main body portion thereof. Letters or other information-giving means ma be provided upon the portion 21 just as as been described in connection with the portion 12. In Fig. 4 the nature of the information which may be furnished by letters upon the portions 12' and 21 is indicated by the words Thru street and Stop.

The portion 11 or 11' of the front frame of the reflector device is secured by'means of holding screws 16 to the outer edge of the" container 3. The inner edge of each portion 11 and 11' is extended over the outer edge 'nuts 18. The outer edge ofthe portion 11 is portion of the sheet 5 and contacts therewith to hold or assist in holding the sheet 5 in position and also the reflectors 4 in position within the container 3. If desired, the retaining spring clips may be omitted but I prefer to employ as retaining and holding means both the retaining clips 8 and the portion 11 or 11' for retaining and holding the said portions 5 and at in position.

It will be seen that by my invention I have provided'arefiector signal head having a cover frame provided with means whereon means may be placed. for fulnishing any desired information to such tra c as may use the highways upon which the signals may be located.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Leters Patent 1. A light reflector signal head comprising a container within which light reflectors are located, and a frame secured to the outer edge of said head and operating to retain the reflectors within the said container, the said frame comprising a relativel narrow portion which extends inwardly o the container-and'also having a rearwardly extending outer flange which encircles the outer edge of said container, and the said frame being provided with a portion projecting therefrom and in the plane thereof upon which is adapted to be placed information giving means.

2. A light reflector signal head comprising a container within which a light reflector is located, the outer edge of the said container terminating in a lateral flange position, a

frame overlying the outer edge portion of the said container, and means for securing the said frame to the'said lateral flange, the said frame consisting of a relatively narrow portion which extends inwardly of the container and operates to retain the reflector therein and the said frame having a portion which projects vertically from a portion of the edge thereof, upon which portion information giving means is adapted to be displayed,
