HOLDING DEVICE.
Applicati n filed March 3, 1927. Serial No. 172,278.
This invention relates to holding devices particularly adapted for embodiment in tobacco users appliances; and more particularly the invention r'elatesto such devices for holding cigars and cigarettes.
An object of the invention is to provide a unique and novel device of this character which is useful and which readily lends itself to quantity production.
Other objects of the invention will more readily appear from an understanding of the following description and accompanying drawings, illustrating one embodiment of the invention, and the invention will be more specifically set forth in the accompanying claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which illustrate a preferred form of the invention:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the invention embodied in combination with an ash receiver,

Fig. 8 is an end elevation showing the holding device in one position, and
Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the holding device in the opposite position.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a suitable base, in the present en'ibodime'nt in the form of an ash receiver, to which is attached a projection 2 extending outwardly therefrom and provided with downwardly and outwardly convergently extending faces. The member 2, formed as above, is in effect a cam which is positioned between the lower extremities of the arms 3 and 4 and which lies in the path of movement of these arms in the manner and for the purpose to be more fully understood from the following description. The upwardly extending arms 3 and 4 are attached adjacent their lower ends to the sides of the cam 2 by means of suitable pivotal connections such as the machine screws 5 and 6. Downwardly extending pro-' jections 7 and 8 are provided respectively on arms 3 and 4 andact as limit stops to define the limit of throw of the arms in their outward direction, by engaging the lower rim of the base or ash receiver 1. The arms 3 and 4 are provided adjacent their upper ends 'with engaging portions such as the jaws 9 and 10 between which a smokable roll of to suitable means such for example as by the.
slot 11 formed in the arm 4, inwhieh is seated a reduced portion 12 of the arm 3; the arms 3 and 4 being crossed at this point. Outwardly extending wings 13 and 14 are respectively attached to the arms 3 and 4 adjacent the jaws 9 and 10; and these wings l3 and 14 serve the dual purpose of furnishing means by which the arms may be engaged by the user and also provide additional weight at this point to hold the arms to one side or the other of their neutral position of oscillation about their pivotal connection.
It will therefore be seen that the arms 3 and 4, which are pivotally attached to their base by the screws 5 and 6, are oscillatable about their pivotal point and are restricted in their outward movement by the downwardly extending portions 7 and 8. The inward movement is limited by the upper shoulders ad jacent the upper end of the reduced portion 12 coming into engagement with that portion'of the arm 4. adjacent the slot 11. lVhen the arms 3 and 4 are moved to their outward position, as shown in Fig. 4 and designated by the dot and dash lines in Fig. 2, the lower portions of the arms 3 and 4 following the downwardly and outwardly taperingcam 2 move together, thereby separating the jaws 9 and 10. Conversely, when the arms 3 and 4 are moved inwardly, the lower ends of the arms are separated by the cam 2 and the jaws 9 and 10 moved toward each other, and into the position shown in' full lines in Fig. 2 and also shown in Fig. 3. It will therefore be seen that when the user places a cigarette or cigar 15 in jaws 9 and 10, while in their open position, and moves the arms 3 and 4inwardly in an anti-clockwise direction (Fig. 2) as by means of the wings 18 or 14, jaws 9 and 10 will be moved together to thereby hold the cigarette or cigar firmly between them. WVhen it isdesired to remove the cigarette or cigar from the holder, the operation is reversed.
It is obvious to those skilled in the art that suitable relative movement between the holding jaws 9 and 10 may also .be adequately accomplished by acam adapted to move either the arm 3 or 4 in a direction transverse to its oscillatory movement about its pivot oint while maintaining the holding jaw carried by the other arm in a plane substantially perpendicular to its pivot point.
In actual use it is found that the user may remove a lighted cigarette from his month 9 andlO, with the lighted end projected over the ash receiver 1.
Having thus described my invention with particularity with reference to its preferred form, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art, after understanding my invention, that various changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and I aim in the appended claims to cover such changes and modifications as are within the scope of the invention.
What I claim is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a base, a pair of adjustable arms provided with holding jaws and being pivotally mounted on said base and oscillatable with respect thereto, jaw adjustment means in the path of movement of said arms cooperatively positioned therewith to open and close said jaws upon and in a direction transverse to the I oscillation of said arms about their pivot.
2. A device of the character described comprisin abase, a pair of upwardly extending crosse arms having engaging surfaces adj acent their upper ends, means pivotally oscillatably connecting said arms to said base and acting to move said engaging surfaces toward and-away from each other upon oscillation of said arms about their pivotal connecting means.
3. A device of the character described comprising a base, a pair of upwardly extending crossed arms having holding jaws adjacent their upper ends and being pivotally connected to said base free to be oscillated with respect to said base, and a cam adjacent the pivotal point in the path of oscillatory movement of one of said arms acting to move said holding aws relatively toward and from each other upon the oscillation of said arms.
4.' A device of the character described comprising a base, a pair of upwardly extending crossed arms having holding jaws adjacent their upper ends and being pivotally connected to said base adj acent'their lower ends free to be oscillated with respect'to said base, and a cam adjacent the pivotal point in the path of oscillatory movement of one of said arms acting to move said holding jaws relatively toward and from each other upon the oscillation of said arms.
5. In combination with an ash tray, a device for holding a smokable roll of tobacco over said tray, comprising a cam, a pair of upwardly extending arms provided with holding jaws adjacent their upper ends, said arms being pivotally oscillatably attached adjacent their lower ends to said tray, said cam being in the path of movement of said oscillatable arms and acting, upon the oscillation of said arms, to move said jaws toward each other to thereby grasp and hold said smokable roll of tobacco.
6. A device of the character described comprising a base, a pair of upwardly extending crossed arms havin holding jaws adjacent their upper ends and being pivotally connected to said base free to be oscillated with respect to said base, stop means for limiting the throw of said arms, and a cam adjacent the pivotal point in the path of oscillatory movement of one of said arms acting to move said holding jaws relatively toward and from each other upon the oscillation of said arms.
7. A device of the character described comprising a base, a pair of upwardly extending crossed arms having holding jaws adjacent their upper ends and being pivotally connected to said base free to be oscillated with respect to said base, stop means for limiting the throw of said arms, means for normally holding said arms at their limit of throw in either direction, and a cam adjacent the pivotal point in the path of oscillatory movement of one of said arms acting to move said holding jaws relatively toward and from each other upon the oscillation of said arms.
8. A device of the character described comprising a base, a pair of upwardly extending crossed arms having holding jaws adjacent their upper ends and being pivotally connected to said base free to be oscillated with respect to said base, an engageable portion extending from said arms adjacent said jaws, and a cam adjacent thepivotal point in the path of oscillatory movement of one of said arms acting to move said holding jaws rela- JosEF ENGL.
