This invention provides a tool particularly adapted for cutting grooves in boards and analogous surfaces of wood, said tool being adjustable and constructed with a view of being readily assembled and easily and qu ckly dismembered for sharpening or other purposes. g
The invention provides a tool whlch may be adjusted tocut agroove or channel of any required depth and which adm ts of independent use of either member as occasion may require.
While the drawings illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that in adapting the means to meet specific needs and requirements, the design may be varied and such other changes in the minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the invention as claimed, without departing from the splrit thereof.

The main member or body of the tool com prises a shank 1, a stem 2 and a blt 3. The shank 1 is tapered and has a handle 1 fitted to the tapered end. A shoulder 5 is formed at the juncture of the stem 2 with the shank 1, and provides an abutment for a set screw 6, whereby the scoring member may be adjusted. The bit 3 is ofiset from the stem 2 and is arranged at an obtuse angle thereto. The bit 3 tapers to a chisel edge. A groove 7 is formed in the top side of the stem 2 and provides a guide for directing the scoring member when adjusting the same on the body of the tool. A clamp is fitted to the stem 2 and comprises a yoke 8 and a screw 9, the lat ter being threaded in an opening formed in the closed endof the yoke. The spaced elements of the yoke 8 embrace opposite sides of the stem 2 and are connected thereto.
The scoring member comprises a'stem 10,
and a head 11 at one end of the stem, said head terminating in spaced scoring points 12, which define the side walls of the groove or channel formed by use of the tool. The head His "disposed at a slight obtuse angle to the stem 10. A side portion of the stem 10 adjacent the head 11 is beveled, as indicated at 13, to deflect the cuttings laterally when the tool is inoperation. A tongue 14 projects from the bottom side of the stem 10 and matches the groove .7, and coacts there- WllllltO direct the member in its longitudinal adjustment, and also serves to prevent lateral movement of the members or parts. When the members are assembled the stem 10 passes through the yoke 8, as indicated most clearly in Figure 4, and it is secured in the required position by tightening the screw 9, whereby the scoring member is clamped to the routing member. The adjusting screw 6 is preferably threaded into an opening formed in the rear end of the stem 10 and abuts the shoulder 5. The depth gage comprises a plate 15 which is longitudinally slotted and formed at one end with a lateral offset 16 which is adapted to engage the work at one side of the groove or channel and limit the depth thereof, as will be readily understood. Openings are formed in a side of the head 11 to receive a stud 17 and a screw 18. The plate 15 is slot-ted to receive the stud 17 and screw 18. When the screw 18 is hacked to release the gage thelatter may be adjusted to regulate the depth of the groove or channel to be formed. The stud 17 and screw 18 direct the gage in its adjustment and when the screw 18 is tightened the depth gage is made secure in the required adjusted position.
In the use of the tool, it is directed by means of the guiding edge in a manner well understood. As the tool is pushed forwardthe points 12 score the board, or other surface and the bit 3 removes that portion of the board comprised between the score lines, the cuttings passing upwardly over the bit 3 and being deflected laterally by the bevelled portion 13 of the scoring member. A space is formed between the bit 3 and the head 11 and constitutes a throat for the discharge of the cuttings. The scoring points 12- operate in advance of the bit 3 and the distance between the cutting edge of the bit and the scoring points 12 may be regulated by adjusting the stem 10 upon the stem 2.
After the scoring member has been adjusted the screw 9 is tightened to hold the same in the required adjusted position. The main member may be used in substantially the same manner as a chisel by detaching the scoring member, and the latter may be used to form a bead and in this manner each member is capable of independent use should occasion arise.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
A. hand tool comprising a stem having an upstanding shoulder near its rear end and a downwardly and forwardly inclined rout- 20 ing bit at its front end, a second stem resting upon and slidable longitudinally on the first stem and having tongue and groove engagement therewith, a head at the front end of the second stem having parallel scoring points at its lower end to run in advance of the routing bit, the sides of saidsecond stem being beveled downwardly immediately at the rear of the head, a yoke secured upon the first stem and spanning the second stem, a
set screw in said yoke bearing against the second stem, and an abutment screw threaded in the rear end of the second stem and bearing against the upstanding shoulder on the first stem.
