Description

S 25, 19218. mwmm J. Miami! HANDLE SECURING MEANS FOR SHANK FORMING TOOLS Filed. Aug. 18, 1927 Patented Sept. 25, 1928..
JOHN MICALI, OF LAWRENCE, MASSACHUSETTS.
HANDLE-SECURING MEANS FOR SHANK-FORMING TOOLS.
Application filed August 18, 1927. Serial No. 213,838.
The invention relates to shoemakers tools 3 and particularly to the tools used for shaping the shanks of shoes, and has for its object the provision of an improved means for fixedly engaging the handles at the .ends of the shanks carrying the shaping rolls.
The invention will be described in detail hereinafter and will be found illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a. view showing the application of the shank forming tool,
'Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view on an enlarged scale,
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional de tail of one end of the handle showing the means for securing it in position on the spindle, and
lFigure 4 is a transverse sectional view on a plane indicated by the line H of Figure 3.
In the drawings similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts in all of the views.
As hereinbefore stated the invention relates particularly to a shank forming tool for shoemakers. In a pending application filed under date of April 29, 1924, Serial No. 709,842 a shank forming tool is dis closed in which the handles at the ends of the spindle are held in engagement with the ends of the shaping rolls by means of springs carried by the handles and engaging the ends of the spindle so as to permit sliding movement of the rolls on the spindle by pressure exerted by the operator in the use of the implement. In view of the fact that it is required at times that the rolls be held from sliding movement on the spindle to permit exertion of pressure on the shank without threading of the rolls, and at the same time it is desirable that means be pro vided for adjusting the rolls for operation on shanks of different widths, this invention has provision for securing the handles fixedly on the spindle in adjusted positions.
In the drawings the spindle is designated 1, and has threaded ends 2 on which are mounted the handles 3, 4c designating the shaping rolls that are oppositely tapered and arranged to rotate on the spindle and to also spread when the handles 3 are arranged to permit spreading, the adjacent smaller ends of the rolls being reduced on curved planes as shown at 5.
The handles 3 comprise tubular shells 6 having their outer portions internally threaded as shown at 7 to engage the threaded ends 2 of the spindle 1, 8 designating a hand grip carried by the tubular members 6 and that may be made of wood, or any other suitable material. The outer end of each oi the handles 3 is provided with a plurality of radial grooves 9.
10 is a screw engaging a threaded socket 11 in the end of the spindle, the gauge of the thread of the screw 10 and socket 11 being different from the gauge of the threads 2 and 7. Screw 10 is provided with a ln gitudinal recess 12 in which is located a helical spring 13, and the head of the screw is provided with a transverse groove 14: in which is pivotally mounted a latch arm 15, said latch arm 15 at its pivoted end being engaged by the spring 13, and said spring 13 functions to hold the latch arm 15 in adjusted position, and said latch arm 15 is adapted to engage in one or the other of the radial grooves 9 to hold the handles 3 in adjusted positions on the spindle, the provision of the screw permitting of unscrewing it from the end of the spindle to permit engagementof the latch arm to hold the handle in position when moved outwardly of the spindle to permit spreading of the rolls 4:, the difference in the gauge of the screw threads connecting the handles to the spindle and the screw 10 to the spindle preventing rotation of the handle on the spindle when the latch arm 15 is in place.
What is claimed is A device of the character described, comprising a spindle having a threaded terminal, a handle threaded onto said terminal and adjustable thereon. said handle having grooves in its outer end, a threaded member engaging in a threaded recess in the end of the spindle, and having a longitudinal opening therein, an arm pivotally engaging the threaded member to engage in said grooves to hold the handle in adjusted positions, and a spring in the opening in the threaded member and engaging the arm to hold it in adjusted positions.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
JOHN MJECALT.
