'roeiJ GUARD.
Application file d rebmary My invention consists in a tool'guard and more especially in a saw guardhaving `for one of its objectsto provide asimple, linexpensive, effective and easily operating safety device adapted more especially' for use upon circular saws. y My device is further adapted to cover a circular saw when not in use and to clear the peripheral cutting ec thereof when the work is being fed to the saw or when the saw is being drawn oi' swungthrough the work, without interfering with the cutting efficiency of the saw. p 4 l It will be apparent that theT guard or guards slide upon the worlwhiie the saw is free to cut through the work and thatthey are also adapted to slide upon the work when it is found necessary for the saw to retrace its cut. I have illustrated my deviceA as used on a woodworking machine with the lsaw mounted on a single sliding rodbut it wilhbe understood that I do not limit my device to this especial use as it may be used upon a stationff ary saw or upon one adapted to be swung through the work. 'p y i It is apparent from the drawings that my device consists-of two leaf members and thatthese mayv operate independently as for example t-when the saw is tilted for a bevel eut through the work. t i Referring to the drawings F ig.1 is a plan view of my device as attached to the crossliead of a single rod woodworker; F g. 2 is a side view of my device g1 Fig. shows the upper stationary guard to which my leaf members are attached; Fig.` 4 is a crosssection taken on the line 4 4 of Fig` 2; Fig. 5 is a cross-section on 'the liiie 5-5 of Fig. 2; Fig. 6 is a cross-section on line 6 6 of Fig :2. s Y
HefeiringV more particularly to the draw ings 1 denotes lthe single rod of a woodworkino` machine, :2 is a collar rigidly secured thereto havinggraduations thereon adapted to register with graduations scribed on the collar 3 which is an integral part ofthe cross-head 4;, which is provided with the handle 5. A mandrel 6, carries a circular saw at one end and a pulley 8 at the other. An upper stationary guard 9 covers the top of the'circular saw 7, this guard is attachedv to the cross-head 4 bymeans of screws 10 coifntersunk in the guard 9. To the guard 20, 1925. Serial No. 10,561.
9 is attached a reinforced lug ll by means of screws 12, and countersunk in this lug is a pintle 13 having a nut 14:.V Mounted upon this pintle `are vtwo leaf guards `15 and 16 which'are provided with stop lugs 17 and18 which in turn are provided with sete screws 19 and 2O adapted to regulatev'and y determine the*downward4 swing' ofsaid leaf guards.
It willbe seen' that each leaf guard is cut away to allow for the mandrel as shown inthe novel construction, lcombination and arrangement of my parts, what I wish to claim and secure by Letters-Patent is I claim: y v 1.k In av saw guard for areciprocatory saw, the combination of a` cover plate mounted in fixed relation to the saw and provided' with ay lug positioned inadvanceV ofthe saw;
and two'cover plates pivotally mounted on said lug and provided with arcuate lower edges. Y
2. In a saw guaidfor a reciprocatory saw, the rombination of a cover plate mounted in fixed' relation to the saw; and two cover platespivotally mounted on said fixed cover plate in advance of the saw, and provided witharcuate lower edges.
3. yIn a saw guard for a reciprocatory saw, `the combination of a cover plate mounted pivotally mounted on said fixed cover plate in advance of the saw; a stud on each of said pivoted cover plates;V andan adjusting` screw in each vstud adapted to co-act with the fixed cover plateto limit the movement of the pivoted plate upon which the stud is mounted.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing vas my own, I aix my signature.
EDWIN DOUGLAS Boven.
