vUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEONARD J. HILL, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
EXTENSION TABLE.
Application led February 9, 1925. Serial No. 7,970.
ing these advantages which is economical in` structure and at the saine time strong and F55 rigid.
Y Objects pertaining .to details and economies of my invention will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects ot my invention 3.0 by the devices and means described in the iollowing specification. The invention is clear ly deined and pointed out in the claims.
' A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in '35 the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. I is `a transverse section of my im- Y proved table in collapsed adjustment, the
legs being partially broken away.
Fig. II is a longitudinal section on a line corresponding to line 2 2 of Fig. I.
Fig. III is a fragmentary plan view with the table extended.
Fig. IV is a detail transverse section on a line corresponding to line 4-4 of Fig. III. Fig. V is a detail section onv a line corresponding toline 5-*5 of Fig. II.
In the drawing the sectional views are talr'en looking in the direction oi the little L0 Varrows at the ends of the section lines and similar numeralsl ot reference indicate similar parts in all of the views.
Referringlto the drawing. I provide a bed which in the structure illustrated 'comprises side rails or members 1 and end members 2 connected to the legs 3. A top member 4 is fixed to this bed. I also provide a pair yof adjustable top members 5 which are adapted to be telescoped over the iixed top member .fio or to be adjusted into the plane thereof as' shown inFig. IV constituting extensions of the fixed top member.
To the under sides of adjustable top members 5 I secure supplemental top members 6,
55. their outer edges being flush with the outer edges of the top members 5. The supplemental top members are adapted to complement the top member 4 and to rest upon the side rails 1 of the bed when the table is collapsed. The adjustable top members 5 and these supplemental top members Gare carried by slides 7, the outer ends of the slides being secured to the under sidesof the supplemental top members 6 as illustrated.
These slides 7 are adapted to slide through the openings 8 in the side rails 1 and are supported by the bottoms of the slots. The
slides are arranged in opposed pairs, that is,
side by side as shown in Fig. II, and between the slideways 9. These slideways have inwardly inclined grooves 10 on their inner faces which are engaged by the latterally projecting pinsl 11 on the slides. These t grooves are in eii'ect cam grooves for controlling the position of the adjustable top members as they are moved to and from extended position.l
The slides have notch-like recesses 12 `in 1 their bottom edges adapted to receive'the bed members l when the slides are extended permitting the adjustable top members to drop down into the plane oi? the iixed top member. The cam grooves 10 in the slideways have hook-like outer portions 13 in which the pins travel when the notches are in register with the rails l thereby permitting the slides to drop down and also to have a limited longitudinal movement when in this lowered position, the `notches being of such length as to permit this movement. This allows the adjustable top members to be dropped down into the plane of the top and `slide horizontally to engage the dowels 14 as i illustrated'in Fig. IV. The fully extended postion of the slide is indicatedl by dotted lines at the left of Fig. IV.
The slides also have outwardly inclined cammed edges 15 which coact with the wedgeshaped cams 16 on the under side of the ixed table top to permit the tiltingv of the slides and to support the inner ends of the slides when the table is extended.
I/Vhen it is desired to extend the table the adjustable sections are drawn out as far as possible `which brings the notches 12 into register with the bed members which permits the adjustable top sections to drop down into the plane oi the fixed top section. The adjustable top section is then pushed in to the position shown in Fig. IV in which the top sections are broughtedge-to edge with their coasting dowels in engagement.
signed as a combined `library or like tableV and dining table. It has the advantage of being attractive in appearance, very rigid either when collapsed or extended, and may 'be easily manipulated. Vhen the tableis collapsed it sho-ws but one'line of-opening and ywhen extended buttwo lines of opening.
I have illustrated and described my 1mprovements in a simple and practicalembodiment thereof. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe certain modifications or adaptations which I contemplate as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to embody or'adapt the same as may be desired. i
