AUTO CAMP BED.
Application filed February This invention relates to bed structures and I )mrticularly pertains to collapsible camp eds;
g It is the principal object of the present invention to generally improve devices of the character described by providing them with head and foot boards capable of forming a case to enclose the bed frame when collapsed.
It is another object of the invention to provide beds of thecharacter described with an improved spring mattress designed so that a portion of it may be deflected by a load imposed thereon without materially deflecting the entire mattress.
One form which the invention may assume is exemplified in the following description and illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a camp bed embodying the preferred form of my inven tion.
Fig.2 is an.enlargedfragmentary view of the spring mattress showing its construction.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the end rails of the bed showing the connections between the head and foot boards and the end rails.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of the connection between the adjacent ends of the sections which constitute each side rail.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view through the end members 22 and 23 in folded position with the bed structure omitted for the sakeof simplicity.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawings,'10 generally indicates a bed frame having a head rail 11, a foot rail 12 and side rails 14. 7 All of these elements are formed of angle iron of dimensions to give them sufficient strength and rigidity.
The side rails 14 are each formed in two sections of different lengths which are pivotally connected at their outer ends to the head and foot rails 11 and 12 so that they may be folded parallel to these latter rails and nested within them. The sections of the side rails connected with the footrail (likewise those connected with the head rail) are of different lengths, so that both of them may be folded parallel to the foot rail and nested therein to ermit the bed to be rolled into a compact undle for transportation or storage.

being had to thisfigure, it is seen that a hoole like projection projects from the bottom surface of therail section 1.4 and engages a drilled hole 16 in the rail section 1 11 To maintain this engagement and give suflicient rigidity to the connection a cam lever 17 is pivoted to the rail section 14 a short dislever 17 about its pivotal point, its cam endmay be disengaged from the rail section 14". This section may then be disengaged from the pro ection 15 and the rail sectionsseparated.
To support the bed frame, each side rail section is fitted with a pivotal. leg-19 which may be folded within and parallel to the side section towhich it is pivoted. Each leg is provided with a brace 20 which is pivoted to the leg at one end. The other end is formed with an opening adapted to engage a projection on the adjacent side rail.
A SGCOIlClbI'flCG 21 is provided for each leg. This brace is pivoted to the adjacent head or foot rail and is formed with a hooked end for. engaging a notched opening 22 in the adjacent leg 19. 'When the bed is knockeddown the brace 21 is folded within the end rail and the brace 20 isfolded parallel to the leg. The latter is then folded to nest within the side rail section to which it isattached. i
To form head and foot boards I provide semi-cylindrical members 22 and 23 which are arranged transversely of the frame. one
adjacent the head rail and oneadjacent the foot rail, with their concave surfaces disposed upwardly. The head board, 22 ishinged to the head rail so that when the frame, is folded compactly it may be folded intothe headboard 22. The foot board 23 is formed with studs 24 which engage openings inthe foot rail to removablysupport the foot board. When the bed frame is compactly folded into the headboard, the foot board is placed thereon and unites with the head board to form a substantially complete cylinder to enclose the bed frame.
To latch the head and foot boards together, the latter is formed with latch members 25 which mav be engaged with openings 26 formed in the head board.
The spring fabric used in connection with had to these figures, it is seen that the fabric comprises longitudinal chains 27 fitted at their ends with tension springs 28 which are connected with the head and foot rails. The chains 27 are spaced apart transversely of the frame and are connected together intermediate the ends of the bed by short transverse links 29. The transverse rows of these links 29 connect alternate pairs of the chains. Likewise, the links of the rows are relative- 1y staggered. By this construction any group of the longitudinal chains may be deflected without deflecting all of the remaining chains. This overcomes the disadvantage of the bed fabrics in which the transverse connections between the chains extended completely across the bed. In this construction, the bed sagged at the point where the greatest strain was put, and the occupant or occupants rolled toward this point because the transverse connections bowed from end to end.
The chains at the sides of my improved fabric are fitted with V-shaped latches 30 which may be detachably connected with lugs 31 projecting vertically from the side rails. It will be noticed that these latches 3O occur intermediate the points where the short links 29 connect with the side chains.
It is apparent that the fabric here disclosed may be readily rolled up around the frame when the latter is collapsed.
Short braces 21 are located in diagonally opposed corners of the frame. These braces are pivoted at one end to the end rails and are adapted to be detachably connected at their other ends to the side rails. The braces 21 fold within the end rails when the frame is collapsed.
In collapsing the bed frame and folding it into a compact package for transportation, the foot board is first removed from the end rail and the Vshaped latches on the spring fabric are disengaged from the side rails. The cam levers 17 are then swung about their pivotal points to release the engagement between the overlapping ends of the sections of each side rail. The sections of the side rails are then disconnected from each other by wwithdrawing the projections 15 on the secup on the foot rail and its nested parts until the foot rail is contiguous to the head rail. The whole is then laid in the head board and the foot board is latched thereto to form a case for the collapsed frame.
The bed may be erected by simply reversing the operation just described.
It should be stated that when the bed is erected, the head and foot boards form ideal holders for fishing rods, guns and like devices.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: i
A bed frame including end rails, side rails pivoted at their ends to the end rails, legs pivoted to the side rails and foldably thereagainst, said side rails each being formed of two sections of different lengths detachably connected at their adjacent ends whereby their sections may be folded parallel to the end rails and nested therein. a concave head board hinged to one end rail, a concave foot board detachahly connected to the other end rail whereby the foot board may be removed and the frame collapsed within the. head board, and latch means for connecting the foot board to the head board to form a case for the collapsed frame.
