Description

ms. 1,682,002 W. A. YARWOOD AUTOMATI C STOKER Qriginal Filed June 15, 1925 ill Patented Aug. 28, 1928 WILLIAM A. YARWOOD, F BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
AUTOMATIC STOKER.
Application filed June 15, 1925, Serial No. 37,255. Renewed May 10, 1928.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in furnace attachments, and particularly to stokers therefor.
One object of the invention is to provide a device which is adapted to be secured to a furnace door, and which is automatically operated to feed coal into the furnace.
Another object is to provide a device of this character wherein the coal is kept in an agitated condition, and fed to a means for throwing the coal into the furnace so that such coal will be evenly spread over the fire.
A. further object is to provide a device of this character wherein the agitator and the coal throwing means are driven at different speeds, whereby to prevent choking of the device.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accon'ipanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a furnace door with the automatic stolrer applied thereto.
Figure 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view through the hopper and feeding means, on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, represents the door of a furnace, in which is formed an opening through which the coal is thrown into the fire. Bolted onto the door, in covering relation to the opening 11 of the furnace door, is a casing 12, which is in the form of a hopper having the inclined bottom 13. transverselyin the intermediate portion of the hopper 12 is a partition 14, having an opening 15 which is arranged to permit coal to pass therethrough. Disposed transversely through the hopper, above the partition 14, is a shaft 16, and mounted on the shaft, within the hopper, and'adjacent the opening 15. is a rotary agitator 17 which maintains the coal in motion so that it will more readily flow through the said opening. Disposed through the hopper, in the lower portion thereof, is ashaft 18, on which is mounted the rotary projecting device 19, said projecting device including a plurality of radial blades 20, onto which the coal falls, after it passes through the said opening 15, and
Disposed which is arranged to project the coal through the opening of the furnace door, onto the fire. On one end of the shaft 16, outwardly of the hopper, 1s a worm gear 21, while a similar, but smaller gear 22, is carried by one end of the shaft 18, outwardly of the hopper. Mounted on the side of the hopper, and ex tending toward and away from the furnace door, is a shaft 23, one end of which carries a small worm gear 24- meshing with the gear 22, while the other end carries the larger worm gear 25, meshing with the gear 21. The shaft 18 is driven by the shaft 26, from the electric motor 27, which is mounted on the furnace door.
In the outer wall of the hopper, in the upper portion thereof, there is provided a loor 28, through which coal is introduced into the hopper. A removable hopper 29 is disposed in an opening 80, in the top of the hopper, from which the coal may be permitted to flow, slowly, into the main hopper, said secondary hopper being provided with a cut off valve for controlling the flow of coal therefrom.
The hopper 12 being properly. filled with coal, and the motor being in motion, the gears will cause the rotation of the agitator, and
of the projector, with the result that the coal above the partition will be agitated and caused to flow through the opening 15, onto the projector, and by reason of the rapid rotation of said projector, the coal will be thrown onto the fire in an evenly distributed condition.
lVhat is claimed is:
A. stolring device comprising a casing having an inclined bottom wall, and a furnace contacting wall provided with a discharge opening adjacent its lower end, an inclined partition in the casing extending from the bottom wall to the furnace contacting wall above said opening, said partition having an opening above the level of the first opening, a rotary element on the upper side of said partition and in position to agitate the fuel adjacent said partition opening, and a projector inwardly of the discharge opening directly beneath the partition opening in position to receive the fuel thereon which falls vertically from said partition opening.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
WILLIAM A. YARWOOD.
