SHIELD FOR SKYLIGHT Am) FLOOR-LIGHT oons'rrnno'rron.
I 5 Application filed July 20, 1927. Serial No.'-207,0 80.
My invention relates to anovel construction of a metallic shield or lenslholder adapted to receive lenses in Skylight and floorlight construction, wherein the shield or lens holder in which the glass lens sets has 7 its outer wall projecting below the bottom of the inside flange or gutter that sup orts a glass lens, the lower terminal of sai outer wall being deflected so asto form better anchoring means, which is embedded in the reinforced concrete. My novel construction of shield or len holder enables a much greater body or greater area of cement to bear against the shield on its exterior surface, which I have found tobe a great advantage in making the job more water-tight,:and my novel construction further results in the shield or lens holder-being more effectively anchored within the concrete;
To the above ends, my invention consists of a novelconstruction'of metallic shieldor lens holder which may be of polygonal or other shape and is provided with an inwardly deflected flange or gutter upon which the lens is supported, the outer surface or wall of said shield being continued downwardly below said inwardly deflected gutter, and provided with a deflected terminal lip, whereby the shield is more firmly anchored in the concrete and a more water-tight job is produced. WVhile my novel construction of shield is adapted to a lens or glass of any suitable construction, I preferably employ in conjunction therewith, a lens of annealed glass or annealed wired glass.
By my novel construction, I amenabled to produce a floorlight and skylight construction, wherein the durability of the resultant construction is materially increased and atless cost.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawings one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable result-s, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown anddescribed.
Figure 1, represents a perspective View of a novel shield or lens holder, embodying my invention. a
' Figure 2, represents a plan view of a skylight and fioorlight construction, showing one manner of utilizing my novel shield.
Figure 3, represents a section on line 33 1. I V i Similar numerals of reference, indicate corresponding parts,
Referring to the drawings: I
1 designates my novel construction of metallic lens holder or shield, the same comprising the vertical upright walls 2, which are preferably four in number when the shield is made in the form ofa rectangle, as shown, although it will be apparent that said shield maybe of other polygonal contour or 1 round without departing from the spirit of my invention.
3 designates an inwardly projecting upwardly inclined lip, flange or gutter upon which a lens 4 is supported, said lens'being preferably of annealed glass or of annealed wired glass having the wire mesh 5 therein, if desired, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3. The vertical wallor outer surface 2 of the shield is continued downwardly, as indicated at 6, below the plane of the inner gutter or flange 3 and preferably terminates in the outward- .ly deflecting upwardly inclined flange or'lip 7, which, whenthe concrete 8 is set, is anchored therein as is evident, said lip extending completely around the shield.
It will be apparent that by the continuation or prolongation of the outer vertical surface or wall 2 to the extent indicated at 6, Iain enabled to have a greater body or area of cement contact against the shield on the outside, which I have found in practice to'be of greatadvantage in making the job more water-tight and in effecting the anchoring of the shield within the concrete. The edges of the lens 4: may be provided with a sealing or coating compound as shown in my prior Patent No. 1,587,487 if desired.
It will be understood that my novel construction of shield may be employed with a glass or glass lenses of any character but I preferably employ lenses made-of annealed glass or annealed wired glass as I have found that lenses of this character give efiicient and superior results. a
As will be understood from Figure 3, it will be seen that the concrete 8 is continued around the gutter'3 up to the points 9, so
that the concrete entirely encloses all metal parts so that no corrosion thereof can take place which is an important deslderatum in structures of this character, and in addition 1 a plurality of anchoring elements 3 and 7 are provided, as is evident. V c
It will now be apparent thatl have vde-v vised a novel and useful construction which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the'inventi'on and the above description and while I have in the present instance shown and described the preferred embodiment thereof which has been found in practice to give satisfactory and. reliable results, it is to be understoodthat the sameis susceptible of modification in various particulars Without departing from the spirit orscope of the .invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention what Iclaim as. new and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is: a
In a device of the character stated, a lens "holder comprising anouter vertical Wall forming a shield and an internal inwardly projecting gutter adapted to support a lens, said outer wallbeing continued below the plane of said gutter and being 'rearwardly and [upwardly deflected at its bottom terininal'to-form anchoring means and a body of concrete completely enclosing said anchoring means, shield and the underside of said gutter, whereby said shield, anchoring means I and gutter are prevented from corrosion.
