FIREPLACE STRUCTURE.

This invention relates to a fire place structure, and its object is to provide means whereby the heatcommonly lost in heating the chimney of the ordinary fire place may be largely prevented, the heat being dissipated into the room instead of being used to heat the structure of the chimney and thereby prevent waste of fuel.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the fireplace structure may be made in sectional form and applied to various sizes or shapes of fireplaces as may be required in practice.
Other objects of the invention will be apparent as the description proceeds.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which the same reference numeral is applied to the same portion throughout the several figures of the drawings'and of which there may be modifications.

Figure 2 is a vertical sectional View of the fireplace structure on the line 22 Figure 1.
It will be understood by those skilled in the art that this fire place structure may be made of cast iron, terra cotta, sheet metal or of any other convenient material to effect the desired result, which is to heat air 1nstead of incidentally heating the fire brick of the chimney, thereby making a considerable saving in fuel.
The numeral 1 indicates the portion of the mantel which appears in the room, 2 the mantel shelf, and 3 the chimney. The opening in which this fire place structure is to be installed is of a common form, that is, rectangular in shape in accordance with the convenience of the chimney builder, and the fire place structure consists of a metal or tile lining which will give theproper appearance to the fire place, but which really conceals a flue entirely around the fire place and entirely around the basket grate 5.
In the present instance the fire place structure consists of five parts, the bottom portion 6, the back portion 7, the top portion 8, and the two side portions 9 and 10. The bottom structure upon which the grate 5 is placed consists of an upper floor 12, and

and with a diagonal grille work between the two ends. The back member consists of a front wall 16, and a back wall 17 this back:
member being made to fit on the top of the bottom member in any suitable convenient way to make substantially an air tight joint therewith.
e The side members are'each provided with the outer wall 18, and with an inner wall 19 as illustrated in Figure 2, and they join the bottom member to permit air to pass through the fine of the bottom member and up between the two walls 16 and 17 as well as between the four walls 18 and 19 of the side members.
The fire place is completed by placing the top member 8 thereon. This top has the two walls 20, 21 with a smoke flue 22 extending therethrough, and this top member will permit the air which passes through the side members and the back members to pass upwardly and outwardly at the front through the grille work 23. Grille work 24 and 25 is also used to enclose the two side members.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that whatever heat may be generated by the fuel in the basket 5 will either be thrown out into the room, or will pass up the flue 22 withsmoke, and will also heat the walls 20, 19 and 16 because of their proximity to the fire, and as these walls are heated the air will pass into the grille work at the lower portion of the fire place at 16, and from there will be distributed upwardly and outwardly through the other grille work 24:, 25 and 23, thereby conserving a considerable amount of the heat, and the outer walls 21, 17 and 18 of the several members of the fire place will be very little heated.
Having thus described my invent-ion, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows, but modifications may be made in carrying out the.in-
vention as shown in the drawing, and in the above particularly described form thereof, within the purview of the annexed claim.
