Thisinventionrelates to means for4 filling two containers alternately, and is particularly applicable to apparatus, such as curb-side pumps-of the type in which a plug cock or like valve automatically controls the supply of liquid to and the discharge of liquid from the containers, the said cock being actuated by increase in the'pressure of the liquid when a containeris filled.
According to one feature of the rpresent invention, the necessary movement of a plug cock to fill a pair of containers alternately and to deliver liquid therefrom is automatically effected by two cylinders, the pistons of which are directly coupled to a rocking member, such as a saddle piece or the like, having on the two end portions thereof a valve seating for controlling the admission of liquid to one or other of the cylinders, the said seatings being adapted to engage one or the other face of a double-headed valve, fast with the plug of the cock. Preferably the angular distance between the valve faces is 30 less than the` angular distance between the seatings on the saddle piece, and an over-centre spring 1s connected to the plug or to the double-headed valve, the whole being so arranged that the pistons can cause the saddle piece, and withit the double-headed valve and plug, to turn, say o while the over-centre spring turns the double-headed valve, and with it the plug,- a further 30, so that the double-headed valve leaves that valve seating on the saddle piece against which it had been abutting, and comes into contact with the other valve seating, thereby preventing further admission of liquid to that cylinder which was being sup-4 plied and allowing liquid to be admitted to the other cylinder.
Preferably the saddle piece is rotatably mounted upon an extension on the plug. The saddle piece is preferably provided with a partition which separates one cylinder from the other, whereby the pressure conditions in each cylinder are independent, whilst, in order that liquid which is discharged from one cylinder while the other cylinder is being supplied, may be led away, a pair of grooves formed in the plug and in communication with the liquid reservoir, for example, are each adapted to be placed in communication, by ports formed. in the Saddle piece, with that munication with the reservoir.

In a modification the pistons are directly connected to a sleeve concentric with a plug valve which controls the supply of liquid to the cylinders in which the pistons are located. e
The sleeve is provided with an abutment 'which is' adapted to engage one or the other of two projections on a crank to which one end of`the over-centre spring is secured. The crank is also provided with'projections adapt ed to engage between abutments formed on the plug cock, and with an-abutment formed on the plug valve.
Preferably the arrangement is such that the pistons move the'crank and the plug cock through 60, and the over-centre spring moves the plug valve through 30 and completes the necessary movement of the plug cock, thereby causing this latter to move through p The liquid which is discharged from the cylinders is preferably led into a chamber in which the sleeve, crank and over-centre spring are located, and into which escapes any fluid which may leak past the 'plug cock orV from bridge which connects the containers, tl chamber being placed in com- This chamber may normally be at atmospheric pressure, brut if the system be under air pressure it is preferably in communication therewith, thus providing back pressure to the pistons alternately and thereby automatically preventing premature reversal of the plug valve, so that it can only be reversed when a container is emptied and the pressure of the air system thereby lowered.
. Preferably the plug cock and the plug valve are arranged coaxially.
Preferably the mechanism comprising the pistons, saddle piece or sleeve, double-headed valve or plug valve, andover-centre spring, is located in shunt between the pump and the inlet to the plug cock, whereby movement of the said mechanismdoes not affect the capacity of the containers.
When the apparatus is provided with mechanism for indicating the quantity of liquid delivered,v the over-centre spring is located within the asing of the plug cock, whereby the said indicating mechanism may be removed without affecting the automatic operation of the cock.
Preferably the plug cock is formed as one unit, and the plug valve, sleeve, crank and over-centre spring are formed as a separate unit, the two units being secured together. Such an arrangement facilitates the assembly of themechanism.
Preferably in order that free from end pressure, passes through a tition into a chamber to which access of liquid is prevented by said partition, the said chamber being maintained substantially at atmospheric pressure, which maybe effected by extending the grooves formed on the plug into said chamber. In this case the inlet port in the plug and also the ports connecting the container to the said inlet port and the delivery port, are formed lin the periphery of the plug.' Liquid which leaks past the bearing in the partition may conveniently be returned, for example, to the reservoir through the said grooves.
theplug shall be the end thereof Preferably the over-center spring is yalso` located in the said chamber. f In a modification of this feature of the invention, means are provided for neutralizing the thrust exerted by the liquid on the plug cock. This is effected by providing in the plug cock a pocket which is in communication with the liquid delivered through the inlet port to the said plug cock, and is located diametrically opposite to the said inlet port. Preferably when necessary, I provide at one end of the plug cock a chamber, closed by a piston and in communication with the liquid delivered to the plug cock. Movement of the piston is prevented by an adjustable stop and the area of the said piston is preferably such that the pressure eX- erted by the liquid on the end of the plug cock balances the pressure which tends to produce endwise movement.

In place of connecting the over-centre spring directly to the plug or valve, we may connect it to a disk having. pins thereon, which loosely engage recesses in the plug or i. e. with a certain amount of play.
In a modification I interpose a floating ring between the plug or valve and the disk, the said ring being loosely connected to the said plug or valve and disk by means of pins in the one engaging recesses in the other.

Referring more particularly to Figures 1 to 3, 1, 2 are cylinders in which are located pistons, 3, 4, connected by connecting rods 5 to a saddle piece 6, located in a casing 7 and rotatably mounted on an extension 8 of a plug cock 9. The saddle piece 6 is provided with ports 10, 11 (see Figure 2), through which can pass liquid from a chamber 12 in com-v munication with the liquid supply, and 13 is a valve fast with the extension 8 and provided with valve heads 14, 15, adapted alternately to close the ports 10, 11 respectively. The saddle piece 6 is also provided with a partition 16 (see Figure 2) which separates the cylinders 1 and 2. Fast with the extension 8 of the cock 9 is a lever 17 provided with pins 18 (see Figure 3) which loosely engage the Walls of holes 19 formed ina ring 20, also in ring 20 are holes 21 in which are loosely engaged pins 22 carried by a plate'23 to which is secured one end of an over-centre spring 24, the other end of which is secured to a fixed pin `25. 26 are longitudinal grooves, formed in the extension 8, which extend through a partition 8b into a chamber 27 in which the lever 17, .ring'20, plate 23 and over-centre spring 24 are located, the other. .end of the sald groves being 1n communication with a circumferential groove 28 (see Figure l) in communication with a port 29 leading to a passage 30 in communication with a reservoir.. The saddle piece 6 is provided with ports 31 which alternately register withione or vthe other of the grooves 26 and serve thereby tov exhaust the liquid in one or other of the cylinders 1, 2 to the reservoir. i
The liquid is supplied to apparatus, comprising a pair of containers adapted alternately to be filled and discharged, from the chamber 12, through an inlet passage 32, formed, in the extension 8 and plug cock 9, and liquid is discharged therefrom through l a passage 33, any liquid which leaks along the surface of the plug cock being caught by the grooves 28 or by a second circumferential groove 34 (see Figure 1) and thence returned to the reservoir through the passage 30.
The extension 8 is formed with abutments 8a (see Figure 2) which, when the cock 9 is reversed, engage `a lever (not shown) which passes through an opening 7al and which actuates indicating mechanism such as that described in my application Serial No. 244,340, filed January 3, 1928 for Indicating mechanism.
In operation, when the container 'correspending to the'cylinder 1 is lled, the supp y of liquid thereto being maintained, the pressure of the liquid rises, and this increase in pressure is transmitted through the port .10 to the piston 3. The piston 3 is thereby raised, and the saddle piece rocked in a clockwise direction (see Figure 2), the cock 9, piston 4 and valve 13 moving therewith. During this operation, the over-centre spring 24 is tensioned, until whenthe spring passes the dead centre position, it moves the valve 13 and the cock 9 relatively to the saddle piece, the port 10v being closed and the port 11 opened to the piston 4 in communication with the supply chamber 12, whilst the cylinder 1 is p-laced in communication with the reservoir through one of the ports 31 and grooves 26. Simultaneously, the inlet passage` 32 is placed in communlcation with the container which was discharging, and the passage 33 a is placed in communication with that container which was being lilled, whereby the vliquid in this container is delivered. When the container, which is now beingsupplied, is filled, the operation is repeated.
It will be seen that the plug cock 9 is not subjected to end pressure for the reason that the chamber 27, into which extends the end of the extension 8, is maintained at atmospheric pressure by the grooves 26 in communication with the reservoir.
In the modification shown in Figures 4 to 12 (in Figures 4 to 8 the parts are shown in neutral position), the pistons 3, 4 `are horizontally opposed and are coupled by a rod 35 adapted to transmit motion by means of a roller 36a to a sleeve 36 having a projection 36b adapted to engage one or other of a pair of abutments 37, 38 (see Figure 7) formed on a crank 23 to which-one end of the over-centre spring 24 is attached, the crank 23 being pivota-lly `mounted in a bracket 39 carried by the casing 7. The crank 23 is also prpvided with abutments 40, 41 (see Figure 7) adapted to engage a projection 42 formed on a plug valve 43, coaxial with respect to the plug cock 9, and provided with passages 44, 45 which register at one end with ports 46, 47 formed in the casing, and which respectively areopen to a supply passage 48 in communication with the inlet to the plug cock 9, and
a chamber 49 in communication through a passage 50 (see Figure 8) with the reservoir. The ports 46, 47 respectively are in communication with the cylinders 1, 2. The crank23 is also provided with a projection or tooth 51 which is located between projections 52 formed on the plug. cock 9 and whose movement is controlled by the stops 39n (see Fige ure 6) at the ends of the bracket 39.
53 (see Figure 4) is a passage which places the chamber 49 in communication with a bridge piece (not shown) connecting the two containers, the arrangement being such that when one container is being filled, the air therein is displaced and compressed, the pressure of the air being transmitted to the chamber 49 and hence through the passage 45 to the rear of one or other of the pistons 3, 4. When the other container is completely discharged, the bridge piece becomes open to the atmosphere and hence the pressureof the air system falls to atmospheric pressure, and therefore the pressure at the rear of one or other of the pistons 3, 4 also falls to that of the atmosphere. Y
In order to neutralize the thrust exerted by the liquid on the plug cock 9, the said cock is formed with a pocket 54 diametrically opposite the passage 32 and in communication through a passage 55 with the said inlet passage 32. j
The passage 55 is extended in one direction to the periphery of the plug cock and is of such dimensions that it- 1s in communication l the rear or Wide end of the cock and in communication, `by means of a passage 58, with the passage 55, whilst the chamber is closed by a piston 59 between which and the end of the plug cock 9 is inserted a light spring 60; the arrangement is such that the thrust eX- erted by the liquid on the plug and tending to move it from its seating, is balanced by the opposite thrust due to the pressure area of the pocket 54 and that of the chamber 57.
The piston 59 is provided with a screw 61, the head of which abuts against an adjustable screw 62 carried by a bracket 63 secured to the casing.
When the apparatus is provided with mechanism such as that described in my application No. 244,340, for indicating the quantity of liquid delivered, the plug cock9 is formed with projections 64 (see Figure 5) adapted, when the cock is reversed, alternately to engage a landless transmitting device, such as descried in my application No. 244,340 and comprising a cap 65 to which is secured on@ end. 0f a flexible metallic tube' 66,

the other end of which is secured to a plug 67 screwed into the casing. 68 is a rod, the upper end of which extends to the upper end of the tube 66, and the lower end of which is adapted to enter a socket formed in a pivoted lever adapted, when the rod 68 is rocked by the projections 64, to actuate the mechanism described in the said application No. 244,340.
In operation, when the pressure of the liquid is increased, due to the filling of a container, the said increase in pressure is transmitted to the rear. oi' the piston 3 through the passage 48, valve passage 44 and port 46; since, however, the chamber 49, and hence the rear of the piston 4, are subj ected to the pressure of the air system of the apparatus, the piston 4, and hence the piston 3, are prevented from moving until when the discharging container is empty, the air pressure falls.
Movement of the piston 3 (and hence of piston 4) rocks the crank 23 in an anti-clockwise direction and the motion of the crank is transmitted to the plug cock 9 by the projections 51 and 52, the over-centre spring 4being tensioned by the movement of the crank.
When the over-centre spring 24 has been moved beyond its dead centre position, the crank 23 is moved thereby and at the same time the abutment 41 engages the projection 42, the spring 24 thus reversing the valve 43 and completing the reversal of the plug cock 9. Reversal of the valve 43 places the passage 48 in communication with the rear of the piston 4 and the chamber 49 in communication with the rear of the piston 3, whereby the liquid in the cylinder 1 is exhausted.
During the movement of the plug cock 9, one of the projections 64 moves against the cap 65, whereby the rod 6,8 is rocked and the indicating mechanism, such as is described in my appplication No. 244,340, is actuated. The arrangement preferably is such that the projection 64 does not engage the cap 65 until the over-centre spring 24 commences to move the plug cock 9. v f
As in the arrangement shown in Figures 1 to 3, reversal of the plug cock 9 places that container, which was being supplied with liquid through the passage 32, into communication with the discharge passage 33, and at the same time the passage 32 is placed in communication with that container which was being discharged, whereby the said container is supplied with liquid. IVhen this latter container is filled, and the other container is emptied, the operation above described is repeated.
It willbe seen that the casing 7, Figure 4, is formed in two units, one of which comprises the plug cock 9, and the other the plug valve 43, the sleeve 36, over-centre spring 24 and crack 23', the two units being secured together at 69.
It will also be seen that the mechanism comprising the pistons 3, 4, valve 13 (Figures 1 to 3) or plug valve 43 (Figures 4 to 12) and over-centre spring 24, are located in shunt between the liquid supply and the inlet to the plug cock 9, whereby movement of the said mechanism does not aiect the capacity of the containers.
In the modification shown in Figures 13 and 14, the abutments 64 are replaced by a cam 7 0 integral with the plug cock 9, and 71 is a cam sheath provided with projections 72 adapted to be engaged by the cam which is so shaped as gradually to move into engagement with the said projections, in the manner described inmy application No. 244,340.

In operation, when the cock 9 is reversed, the cam 7 0 moves gradually into engagement with the cam sheath 71 and the rod 68 is rocked, the indicating mechanism being thereby actuated.
What I claim is e 1. In combination, a plug cock adapted to ycontrol the supply and discharge ot liquid from supply means to and from a pair ot containers, two cylinders, means adapted to place the cylinders alternately in communication with said liquid supply means, pistons in said cylinders, a rocking member, means connecting said rocking member to said pistons, said rocking member being adapted upon actuation of said pistons to initially and partially actuate said plug cock, and means adapted to complete the actuation of said plug cock and to actuate the means adapted to place the cylinders alternately in communication with said liquid supply means.`

In combination, a plug cock adapted to control the supply and`discharge of liquid from supply means to and from a pair of containers, two cylinders, means adapted to place said cylinders alternately in communication with said-'liquid supply means, connecting means adapted for connection to the upper ends of said containers so that the air displaced by the liquid efntering one container is forced to said other container and said connecting means, means adapted to place that cylinder which is not in communication with the liquid supply means into communication with said connecting means, pistons in said cylinders, a rocking member, means connecting said rocking member to said pistons, said rocking member being adapted upon actuation of said pistons to initially and partially actuate said plug cock, and means adapted to complete the actuation of said plug cock and to actuate the means adapted to place the cylinders alternately in communication with said liquid supply means.
6. In combination, a plug cock adapted to control the supply and discharge of liquid from supply means to and from a pair of containers, two cylinders, means adapted to place said cylinders alternately in communication with said liquid supply means, connecting means adapted for connection' to the upper ends of said containers so that the air displaced by the liquid entering one container is forced to said other container and means adapted to placethat cylinder which is not in communication with the liquid supply means into communication With said connecting means, pistons in said cylinders, a rocking member, means connecting said rocking member to said pistons, said rocking member being adapted upon actuation of said pistons to initially and partially actuate said plug cock,

11. In combination, a plug cock adapted .to control the supply and discharge oflliquid from supply means to and from a pair of containers, a chamber into which the plug cock extends, means for preventing the access of fluid to said chambeigtwo cylinders, means adapted to place the cylinders alternately in communication with said liquid supply means,'pistons in said cylinders, a rocking member, means connecting said rocking member to said pistons, said rocking member being adapted upon'actuation of said pistons to initially and partially actuate said plug cock, and means adapted to complete the actuation of said plug cock and to actuate the`means adapted to place the cylinders alternately in communication with said liquid supply means.
12. In combination, a plug cock adapted to control the supply and discharge of liquid from supply means to and from a pair of containers, achamber into which the plug cock extends, mea'ns'for preventing the access of iluid to said chamber, two cylinders, a plug valve adapted to place said cylinders alternat-ely in communication with said liquid supply means, pistons in said cylinders, a rocking member, means connecting said pistons to said rocking member, said rocking member being adapted to initially and partially actuate said plug cock, and an overcentre spring mechanism adapted to complete the actuation of said plug cock and to actuate said plug valve.
13. In combination, a plug cock adapted to control the supply and discharge of liquid from supply means to and from a pair of containers, means located on the inlet side of said plug cock for actuating said plug cock, and,comprising two cylinders, means adapted to place t-he cylinders alternatelyi'in comf munication with said liquid supply means, pistons in said cylinders, a rocking member, means connecting said rocking member to said pistons, said rocking member being adapted upon actuation of said pistons to initially and partially actuate said plug cock, and means adapted to complete the actuation communication with said liquid supply means.

and means adapted to actuate said motion transmitting member upon actuation of said plug cock.
17. The combination with a plug cock adapted to control the supply of a fluid, of means for neutralizing the side thrust exerted by the fluid pressure on said plug cock comprising a recess located in the side of the plug.

The combination with a plug cock adapted to control the supply of a fluid, of means for neutralizing the side thrust exerted by the fluid pressure on said plug `cock comprising a recess located in the side of the plug, and means for opposing end thrust exerted by the lluid pressure. comprising a chamber located at one end of said plug cock, a piston adapted to seal said chamber, and means adapted to place said chamber in communication With the liquid supply to said cock.

The combination with a plug cock adapted to control the supply of a fluid, of means`for"neutralizing the side thrust exerted by the fluid pressure on said plug cock, and means for opposing end thrust exerted by the fluid pressure, comprising a chamber located at one end of said plug cock, a piston adapted to seal said chamber, means adapted to place said chamber in communication with the liquid supply to said cock, spring means adapted to .maintain said plug cock on its seating, and means for adjusting said spring.

The combination with a plug cock adapted to control the supply lof a fluid, of means for neutralizing side thrust and end thrust exerted by the pressure of the fluid on said cock, comprising a recess, means for placing said recess in communication with the fluid supply to said cock, a chamber located at one end of said cock, means adapted to seal said chamber, and means adapted to place said chamber in communication with said fluid supply.

The combination with a plug cock adapted to control the supply of a fluid, of means for neutralizing side thrust and end thrust exerted by the pressure of the fluid on said cock, comprising a recess, means for placing said recess in communication with the fluid supply to said cock, a chamber located -at one end of said cock. a piston adapted to seal said chamber, and means adapted to place said chamber in communication with said fluidsupply. v

The combination with a plug cock adapted to control the supply of a fluid, of means for neutralizing side thrust and end thrust exerted by the Huid pressure on said cock, comprising a recess in said cock, a passage in communication with said recess and with the fluid supply to said cock, a chamber located at one end of said cock, a piston adapted to seal said chamber, a passage in communication with said chamber and said fluid supply, spring means abutting against said piston and said cock, and an adjustable thrust member against which the piston abuts.
