My invention relates to wall safes, and it has for a purpose the provision of a thoroughly fireproof wall safe, extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture and install in a partition or wall to occupy the air space between the lathing thereof, and when in stalled presents to the finished surface of a wall or partition an entrance opening and a door therefor, both of which are relatively small, and as a consequence can beeasily concealed by a small picture or other small wall ornament.
I will describe only one form of wall safe embodying my invention, and will then point out the novel features thereof in claims.

Referring specifically to the drawings, my
invention in its present embodiment comprises a frame of rectangular form and ofsuch dimensions as to fit between any two adjacent sides 15 of a'partition or wall. This frame is made of any suitable fireproof material, and in the present instance is conslructed of two side members 16 and two end members 17 formed of wood chemically fireproofed. The end members 17 are nailed or otherwise secured to the side members 16 at points spaced from the ends of the latter, and the inner marginal edges of the members 15 and 16 are all slightly recessed as indicated at 18 to accommodate the marginal edges of two plates 19 and 20, such plates in the present instance being formed of fireproof and nonbrealrable material such as for instance sheet metal and of an area to span the space between the members and thus co-operate with the latter in forming a closed body. The plates may be nailed or otherwise secured to the frame members 16 and 17.
\Vithin the body formed as above described is arranged a box 21 formed of any suitable fireproof material, preferably of sheet asbestos. This box is uniformly spaced from the frame members as well as the plates 19 and 20, and filling this space is cement,'mortar or any other heat resisting material 22. It will of course be understood that in the actual manufacture of the Wall safe the heat resisting material 22 is molded about the box 21 prior to the application of the plates 19 and 20 and the frame- members 16 and 17.
As illustrated to advantage in Figures2 and 3, the front wall of the box 21, the heat resisting material 22 and the front plate 20 are all provided with registeringopenings which coact to form an entrance opening for the safe chamber provided by the box 21. This entrance opening is preferably formed adjacent the lower end of the safe and is circular in form to receive an annular collar 23 preferably formed of metal and having on its outer periphery an annular flange 24 adapted to be embedded into the heat resisting material 22 and in abutting relation to the front wall of the box 21, as clearly illustrated in Figure 3. In this manner the collar 23 is locked in proper position within the entrance opening. Its inner periphery adjacent its inner end is formed with a annular. and tapered lip 25 which forms an abutment for a door 26 to limit the inward movement of the latter Within the collar. This door is likewise of circular form and comprises a metal ring of a diameter to be slidably received within the collar. The ring is adapted to be filled with a body of plaster 27, the outer surfaceof which is flush with the inner edge of the ring while the inner surface abuts a plate 28 of asbestos or other suitable non-inflammable material. As shown in Figure 5 the C011: ventional form of lock 29 is embedded in the plaster 27 so that its locking bolt can roject through a slot 30in the ring 26 and al so into a relatively long slot 31 in the collar 23 to secure the door against removal from the collar. As the slot 31 is relatively long it will be clear that when inserting the door into the collar it is not; necessary that the door occupy a precise position circumferentially in order that its bolt may pass freely into the slot 31.
In practice, the wall safe is designed to occupy the air space between the lathing of a wall or partition and to extend between any two adjacent studs, all in a manner so that when the wall is finished all of its parts will be concealed except the outer edges of the collar 23 and the ring 26, the finish coat of plaster being flush with these edges and flush with the outer surface of the plaster body 27. As
the door and entrance opening are relatively small it will be clear that they can be readily concealed by a small picture or other wall ornament. Legal documents or any other valuables can be placed in the box 21 by removal of the door 26, and as the entrance opening is adjacent the bottom of the box and the box is relatively narrow the legal documents or other papers can be positioned vertically within the box and yet readily accessible at all times through the entrance opening.
Although I have herein shown and described only one form of wall safe embodying my invention, it is to be understood that various changes and modifications may be made therein without departing fronrthe spirit of the invention, and within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim: I
1. A wall safe comprising a frame, plates of fireproof and non-breakable material spanning the sides of the frame to form a closed body, abox within the body spaced from the frame and plates and formed of non-inflan'nnable material, heat resisting material filling the space around the box, one of the plates, one side of the box and the heat resisting material being formed with registering openings coacting to produce an entrance opening, a collar secured in the wall of the entrance opening, and a door for closing the opening.
2. A wall safe comprising a frame, plates of, fireproof and non-breakable material spanning the sides of the frame to form a closed body, a box within the body spaced from the frame and plates and formed of non-intlannnable material, heat resisting material filling the space around the box, one ofthe plates, one side of the box and the heat resisting material being formed with registering openings coacting to produce an entrance opening, a collar extending into the entrance opening and having an annular flange thereon embedded in the heat resisting material and in abutting relation to one wall of the box, a door for the opening slidably fitted in the collar, and means for locking the door in the collar.
3. A wall safe formed in part of plastic material having an entrance opening, a collar in the opening and having an internal lip and an external flange, the flange being embedded in the plastic material, the collar being 'formed with an arcuate slot. a door slidably fitted in the collar, and a locking bolt in the door movable to engage within the slot of the collar to lock the door in the collar.
4. A wall safe comprising a fireproofed wooden frame of rectangular form having recessed portions, metallic plates spanning the sides of the frame and having the marginal edges thereof received within said recessed portions and secured to the frame, a box of sheet asbestos within the frame and spaced from the frame and plates, :1 plastic heat resisting material filling the space around the box, one of the plates, one side of the box and the plastic heat resisting material being formed with registering openings coacting to produce an entrance opening, a metallic annular collar within the entrance opening having an external annular flange embedded within the plastic heat resisting material and in abutting relation to the box, an internal annular lip on the collar adjacent the inner end thereof, the collar having a slot, a door slidably fitted in the colla' and comprising a metal ring adapted to abut said lip, a body of plastic material within the ring, a sheet of non-inflanm'iable material at the inner side of the plastic body, and a locking bolt embedded in the plastic body and engageable within the slot of the collar to secure the door within the collar.
A wall safe-comprising a hollow frame including side members and end members in interfitting relation to the side members; the opposed sides of the side and end members being recessed, plates spanning the members and having their marginal edges received in said recesses, so as to co-operate with the frame in forming a closed body. a box supported within the frame, one of the plates and the box having registering openings co-act ing to provide an entrance opening, and a door for closing the entrance opening.
