My invention relates to improvements in smokers stands,vof the form involving the use of a standard'or upright that serves as a support for a combination of devices that are ada ted for the use of-smokers, such as an as -tray or ash-receiver; a holder fora match-box; and means for gripping a cigar, cigarette, or pipe, and the object of my improvement is to provide a standard of improved form in which the standard proper is capable of appreciable angular movement relatively to its base b reason of a flexible connection between t ese parts,
.. whereby accidental displacement of the ash tray and adjacent parts, as by a blow or the like, will be permitted without upsetting the structure as a whole, and, also, to provide means in convenient form for positively holding the cigar, cigarette, or pipe adjacent the border of the ash-tray structure.

shaped ash-pan structure 12. Connected'tothe border portion of the ash-pan structure and at opposite ends of a diameter is a bail or handle 13 that is provided at the top and middle with a holder 14 for a match-box. Said border portion comprises an annular flat platform 15 that is adapted to receive the ends of'the handle 13 and also other auxiliary devices such as the clips or clamps 16 for receiving and holding cigars or cigarettes.
The base 11 is a disc-like structure that has at the upper face a centrally disposed Screw-threaded socket 17 and which upper face is appreciably crowned or dome-shaped.
The connection between the upright 10 and the base 11 comprises a coil spring 19 that 1s engaged by its'lower end with the socket 17 after the manner of a screw and that in a similar manner is connected with a screw-threaded socket 20, in an adapter or nipple structure 21 and which is itself connected in any approved manner to the lower end portion 22 of the upright 10. The parts described are constructed and arranged so that between the bottom end face 23 of the adapter 21 and the opposed portion 24 of the base 11 there is an appreciable open space 25 for permitting of an appreciable swaylng or swinging movement of the uprlght 10 relatively to the base 11.
The spring 19 serves to provide a resilient flexible connection-between the upright 10 and the base 11. I find it desirable to provide a damping or checking effect for the spring 19 described and effective means for doing this I find in the provision of an interior spring 26 within the outer spring 19, nesting closely within the same, and, also, wound in the opposite direction. This the outer spring lfirniay' be wound right-handed and the innergi sfirmg 26 left-handed. Inserted plugs itifold the springs 19 and 26 in place.
The ash-pan structure 12 constitutes the upper portion of the ash receiver. Connected to said upper portion 12 is the elongated tubular extension 27 that in the assembled position projects downwardly so that the bottom end 28 is adjacent and closely opposed to the adapter or nipple 21. Also, said bottom end 28 is closed by means of a removale cap 29. The tubular extension 27 provides appreciable capacity for ashes and the like.
I provide for dumping the ash receiver by itself without lifting the stand as a whole b arranging to have the tubular extension telescope within the tubular upright, as shown. Also, spring checking means are provided in the form of registering indented rings 30 on the two tubular structures 10 and 27 the outer structure 10 being oonstructed to yield in making and breaking the connection by the provision of a set of longitudinal slits 31 that extend from the top edge 32 across the outer indented ring 30. By exerting a slight amount of force the connection between the upright and the tubular extension 27 can be readily made and broken.
The cigar clip 16 comprises a fixed part 33 that is secured to the annular platform by means of a pair of integral lugs conslsting of the inner lug 34 and the outer lug 35. The outer or end lug 35 is connected with one end of the blank and the inner lug 34 is located adjacent one end of the opening 36 in the body portion 37 of the blank. At the rear end, remote from the outer lug 35, is a tail-like extension 38 that is bordered at the sides by the ears 39. Said ears 39 are bent inwardly and downwardly for serving as the operative supports through the medium of the perforations 40 for the pintle 41.
The shaping of the blank is such as to provide a concave formation or valley 42 immediately in front of the pintle 41. Outwardly from said valley 42 the portion constituting the side walls 43 of the opening 36 is bent to substantially V-shape with the apex 44 at the top. Thus the outer end wall 45. intermediate the apex 44 and the end lug 35, is inclined downwardly from the apex 44.
Said inclined end wall 45 serves as the lower wall of the V-shaped entrance or.
mouth for admitting the cigar or the like to the interior of the clip and to the valley 42.
The upper wall 47 of said V-shaped mouth 46 is provided by the opposed portion of the movable member or part 48. Said movable part 48 comprises a strip of sheet metal of substantially uniform width except for the integral pmtle receiving lugs 49 adjacent the rear end.
The extreme rear end portion 50 is in the form of a tail that is opposed to a corresponding portion 51 of the fixed part 33 and these are operated upon by means of a coil spring 52 so as to tend to hold the movable part 48 in the closed position.
The portion 53 opposed to the valley 42 is convex and under conditions of use tends to crowd or force a cigar that has been moved over the apex 44 downwardly into the valley 42.
The opening 36 by reason of the bend in the side walls 43 in forming the angle and apex 44 operates as an open slot for guiding the movable part 48.
Thus when a cigar orthe like is forced along the inclined plane that is provided by the bottom wall 45 of the mouth 46 towards the apex 44 contact is made with the movable upper wall 47 and the movable part 48 is lifted in opposition to the spring 52. After the apex 44 has been passed the cigar will glide along the inclined plane that is provided by the wall 54 on the inner side of the apex 44. Said wall 54 is on the lower side of a V-shaped space 55 and leads to the valley 42, the portion 53 of the movable part 48 being on the upper side of said V-shaped space 55.
The closing movement for the movable part is effected by the spring 52.
For discharging the contents of the ash receiver the receiver is lifted bodily from the stand proper, a slight lifting force serving to overcome the hold of the spring locking or checking connection in the initial stage, and, finally, the cap is removed so that the contents will drop through the bottom.
The body 57 of the ash pan 12, intermediate the platform 15 and the tubular extension 27, is bell-shaped and terminates in a tubular neck 58 that overlaps the adjacent upper end portion of the tubular extension 27 and is attached thereto. The top edge portion 32 of the standard 10, immediately above the outer connecting ring 30, is flared outwardly so as to avoid contacting with the opposed portion 59 of the hell-shaped body 57 and thereby marring the finished face thereof.
The connecting rib or ring 30 at the upper end of the standard 10 and the mating ring 30 on the tubular extension 27 are indented inwardly. In order to provide clearance for the body portion of the tubular extension 27 relatively to the outer ring 30 on the standard 10 and to permit of a close fit in the telescopic movement of the cooperating tubular structures the material 60 at the upper end of the standard that supports the outer ring 30 is bulged outwardly, as shown, before forming said ring 30.
I claim as my invention 1. In a smokers stand, an upright supporting an ash receiver, a base, and a coil spring serving as the means for connecting said upright and base.
2. In a smokers stand as described in claim 1, said upright and base each having a screw-threaded socket, and the ends of said spring being entered as screws into said sockets.
3. In a smokers stand as described in claim 1, said ash receiver being supported as a separable unit from said upright.
4. In a smokers stand, an upright supporting an ash receiver, a base, said upright and base each having a screw-threaded socket, a coil spring having its end entered as screws in said sockets, and means for holding the ends of said spring in place in said sock'ets.
5. A holder for cigars or the like, comprising a fixed part, a movable part pivotally connected with said fixed part, and spring means for urging said movable part to effective position, opposed portions of said parts being shaped to provide a housing space for a cigar or the like adjacent the pivotal connection and an entrance or mouth at the ends remote from such pivotal connection, and said fixed part being shaped to rovide two inclined planes meeting in a ummock or ridge intermediate said mouth and housing space.
6. In a smokers stand as described in claim 5, said ridge being provided with a guide slot for the adjacent portion of said movable part.
7. A holder for cigars or the like comprising two pivotally connected parts and spring means urging said parts into efiective olding relation, opposed portions of said parts being shaped to provide a housing space for a cigar or the like adjacent the pivotal connection and an entrance or mouth at the ends remote from such pivotal connection, and one of said parts being provided between the housing space and said mouth with a slot to receive a. portion of the other part.
8. In a device of the character described, a base, an upper portion, screw-threaded portions of said base and upper 'ortion, and a helical s ring having'its ends cooperating with sai screw-threaded portions.
